Tern v1.0.0
Tern v1.0.0
Tern is a free, local-first Markdown editor for Windows with native reading preview, workspace search, diagrams, math and PDF, HTML and plain-text export. Application version is 1.0.0.
Download and run
- Download Tern-win-x64.zip and SHA256SUMS.txt from this release. GitHub's source-code archives are not runnable application packages.
- Compare the ZIP's SHA-256 with its entry in the checksum file.
- Extract the entire ZIP to a writable folder and run Tern.exe. Keep all companion files together.
The Windows x64 package is self-contained and includes its .NET 10 runtime; a separate .NET installation is unnecessary. The guides and supplied screenshots are included for local use. This release is unsigned. Windows may show Unknown publisher or SmartScreen warnings. A checksum verifies integrity against the manifest; it does not establish a trusted publisher.
Included features
- Source, Split and Reading modes, document tabs, themes, focus mode and reference pane.
- Native Markdown preview with tables, tasks, code, images, front matter, bounded math and supported Mermaid diagrams.
- Folder/workspace Library, outline, backlinks, broken-link repair, Quick Open and SQLite workspace search.
- Encoding and line-ending preservation, atomic saving, external-change comparison/merge, saved-text history and recovery checkpoints.
- PDF, HTML and plain-text export, Windows text printing, local image insertion and attachment-copy support.
- Beginner lessons and optional, explicitly reviewed AI/MCP connections; live provider compatibility remains separately unverified.
Verification and acceptance scope
These assets are copied unchanged from the successful main-push workflow referenced by this release's source commit and retained automated preview. Before publication, the workflow requires locked dependency restore with vulnerability auditing, a warnings-as-errors Release build, the reproducible eight-project test gate, packaging/publication policy tests, complete file/CRC/SHA-256 verification and an actual extracted executable startup/normal-close smoke check with isolated state and a synthetic Markdown note.
The repeatable gate excludes exactly eight cases that depend on the original untracked review corpus/sample or interactive Windows Shell restore. The original tests remain available. One optional remote-asset test can skip when its separately captured payloads are absent. Review the validation guide and the workflow evidence for exact results; exclusions are not passes.
The extracted-app smoke confirms native startup, opening an unchanged local fixture and normal close. Physical printing, screen-reader behavior, real clipboard/drop combinations, display scaling, installed offline operation, representative performance and trusted signing remain separate acceptance checks. The Latest label provides a download entry; it is not certification of all manual acceptance or a guarantee of zero errors on every computer.
Documentation and maintenance
This first repository release adds the complete README and guides, community contribution/security files, MIT license and dependency notices, consistent GitHub Pages documentation, repository checks and verified release automation. Existing source behavior and application version are preserved; one stale help-text test expectation was corrected to match the implemented save-before-image workflow.
Tern's own code uses the MIT license. Libraries, native components, fonts and the bundled runtime keep their own licenses. Preserve LICENSE, THIRD-PARTY-NOTICES.md and licenses/ when redistributing the complete package.
