ZoteroMultipleLibraries 0.2.2

Choose a tag to compare

@gchapron gchapron released this 06 Oct 11:49

Fixed: sync errors "Invalid setting 'zoteroMultipleLibraries'" introduced by 0.2.1. zotero.org only accepts a fixed set of synced-setting names, and Zotero retried the rejected upload at every sync of the affected groups. The shared marker is now stored in a settings slot the server accepts (a lastReadAloudPosition entry for a pseudo item key that no real item can have, which Zotero's client never reads). The rejected entries left by 0.2.1 are removed automatically when Zotero starts with this version, so the errors stop at the next sync, and existing extra libraries republish their settings by themselves.

Everything else from 0.2.1 (settings shared between computers, automatic adoption on a second computer, automatic WebDAV verification) is unchanged.

Requirements: Zotero 10 (tested on 10.0.4).

Install or update: Tools → Plugins → gear icon → Install Plugin From File… with the .xpi below.

ZoteroMultipleLibraries 0.2.1

@gchapron gchapron released this 06 Oct 11:40

New: settings shared between computers. The file syncing choice of an extra library (Zotero storage, WebDAV reusing My Library's server, a different WebDAV server with its address and username, or none) is stored in the group's own settings on zotero.org together with a marker that the group is an extra library. Passwords are never shared. On another computer with the plugin, the group is shown as an extra library automatically after a sync, with the same choice; only a custom server's password has to be entered there, and the pane says so. Changes made on any computer propagate to the others. A group adopted without such a marker (set up elsewhere with an older version) starts with no file syncing until you choose deliberately, because the choice must be the same everywhere.

Fixed: on a second computer a WebDAV-synced library could stay without files because the server had never been verified there; Zotero skips an unverified WebDAV server, including when you open a file. The server is now verified automatically when settings arrive and shortly after Zotero starts, whenever the credentials are available.

Improved: Sync Now in the settings pane shows progress and reports how many empty groups it found.

Requirements: Zotero 10 (tested on 10.0.4).

@gchapron gchapron released this 06 Oct 11:14

Redesigned settings pane (Settings → ZoteroMultipleLibraries, or right-click a library → Library Settings…):

  • Libraries: create a new library on this computer, or show one of your group libraries as an extra library (also how you set up, on another computer, a library already synced elsewhere).
  • Syncing of the selected library: if not synced, three guided steps (Open zotero.org to create a private group, Sync Now, choose the group or type its ID) and Enable Syncing; if synced, a checkbox to pause it and Show under Group Libraries… to turn it back into an ordinary group library.
  • Files of the selected library: Zotero storage (default), WebDAV, or none. WebDAV can now use My Library's WebDAV server and account, keeping the library's files in a folder of their own (<My Library's URL>/ZoteroMultipleLibraries/<group ID>/), created when you verify; the plugin asks Zotero's own WebDAV code for the password at sync time and never stores a copy. A different server with its own credentials remains possible.

Changed: showing a WebDAV-synced library under Group Libraries again now resets its file sync history, like Zotero does when My Library switches storage mode, so files on this computer are uploaded to Zotero storage at the next sync (if group file syncing is on). Files that exist only on the WebDAV server are not transferred.

Requirements: Zotero 10 (tested on 10.0.4).

Install or update: Tools → Plugins → gear icon → Install Plugin From File… with the .xpi below.

ZoteroMultipleLibraries 0.1.4

Choose a tag to compare

@gchapron gchapron released this 06 Oct 10:52

Fixed: attachments of a linked library were not uploaded or downloaded in either direction when Zotero's Sync preference "Sync attachment files in group libraries using Zotero storage" is off; opening one showed "File Not Found" without trying the server. The file syncing choice made per library in Settings → ZoteroMultipleLibraries is now authoritative: Zotero storage (the default) or WebDAV sync the library's files whatever that group-wide preference says; Don't sync files turns it off. After updating on each computer, sync once: files added earlier are uploaded, and the others are downloaded on sync or when opened.

Requirements: Zotero 10 (tested on 10.0.4).

Install or update: Tools → Plugins → gear icon → Install Plugin From File… with the .xpi below.

ZoteroMultipleLibraries 0.1.3

@gchapron gchapron released this 06 Oct 10:41

Fixed: on a second computer, attachments of an adopted library showed "File Not Found" even though the files were on Zotero storage. After linking or adopting, file syncing had defaulted to "Don't sync files", which also disables the on-demand download when opening an attachment. The default is now Zotero storage (as for group libraries), i.e. Zotero's normal behaviour for group files; WebDAV and "Don't sync files" remain available per library. Existing libraries set up with 0.1.1 or 0.1.2 are updated automatically; after updating, open the attachment again or sync to fetch the files.

Requirements: Zotero 10 (tested on 10.0.4).

Install or update: Tools → Plugins → gear icon → Install Plugin From File… with the .xpi below.

ZoteroMultipleLibraries 0.1.2

@gchapron gchapron released this 06 Oct 10:29

New: using a linked library on another computer. After syncing, the group linked on your first computer appears under "Group Libraries" with its content. Right-click it → Show as Extra Library (also available in Settings → ZoteroMultipleLibraries, and offered automatically when you try to link a local library to a group that already contains items). The library moves to the top level and you can set its file syncing to WebDAV with the same settings as on the first computer; attachments are then fetched at the next sync. Show under Group Libraries reverses it.

Fixed: attachments that Zotero had tried and failed to fetch from Zotero storage before the library was adopted are now fetched from WebDAV once it is configured (the file sync history is reset on adoption and when the file sync mode changes).

Requirements: Zotero 10 (tested on 10.0.4).

Install or update: Tools → Plugins → gear icon → Install Plugin From File… with the .xpi below.

ZoteroMultipleLibraries 0.1.1

Choose a tag to compare

@gchapron gchapron released this 06 Oct 10:10

Fixed: linking an extra library to a zotero.org group failed with "Group … is already on this computer as a group library" whenever Zotero's sync had already downloaded the freshly created (empty) group, which is the normal case. Linking now replaces that empty group library with your library; the next sync uploads the library's content to the group. A group that already contains items is still refused, with an explanation.

Improved: Settings → ZoteroMultipleLibraries lists the empty group libraries on this computer, so you can pick the group instead of typing its ID.

Requirements: Zotero 10 (tested on 10.0.4).

Install or update: Tools → Plugins → gear icon → Install Plugin From File… with the .xpi below.

ZoteroMultipleLibraries 0.1.0

@gchapron gchapron released this 06 Oct 10:01

First release of ZoteroMultipleLibraries: several personal libraries side by side in one Zotero, each working like My Library.

Libraries

  • New Library…, Rename Library…, Delete Library… from the collection tree context menu and the File menu (double-click renames).
  • Extra libraries appear at the top level of the collection tree, right after My Library, with their own collections, saved searches, tags, Duplicate Items, Unfiled Items, Retracted Items, and Trash. Drag and drop, the reader, import/export, the connector, and citations work as in My Library.
  • Collection trees in the Select Items, Edit Bibliography, and citation dialogs show them too.
  • Without the plugin, the libraries remain in the database as ordinary editable group libraries and are never synced or deleted by Zotero.

Syncing

  • Settings → ZoteroMultipleLibraries. A new library is local only. It can be linked to a private zotero.org group of your account, after which Zotero's own sync carries its data.
  • Attachment files of a linked library can go to a WebDAV server of the library's own (URL, username, password, Verify Server), to Zotero storage, or not be synced at all. Your existing WebDAV settings and credentials are never read or changed.

Requirements: Zotero 10 (tested on 10.0.4).

Known limitations: no linked-file attachments in extra libraries (as for group libraries); linking to a group cannot be undone from within Zotero; sync of a linked group against zotero.org was not exercised by the automated tests.

Install: Tools → Plugins → gear icon → Install Plugin From File… with the .xpi below.
