Altered Audio Editor 0.17.1
A small fix release for 0.17.0, from testing.
Fixes
- Space bar now pauses where playback is and resumes from there, whatever Return to Start on Stop is set to. That toggle (Transport menu, Shift+X) still decides what the Stop button does.
- Middle-button drag slides the timeline sideways only. Hold Shift to move up and down as well. The scroll wheel still scrolls the tracks.
- Track header: Sync Lock now sits next to M and S, so Mono and Invert Polarity are no longer pushed under the edge.
- Clip names sit lower and further in, so a selected clip's outline no longer cuts them off.
- QuickPass has a Cancel button while a scan runs, and a scan whose type you change is ignored instead of leaving the panel stuck.
- Libraries: a Details button under the list hides and shows the item details. It remembers your choice.

Libraries you can close, find and carry to another computer, a color and cover popup that stays next to the badge, and settings in one clear folder.
Libraries
- Closed libraries stay on your list. Close Library now just hides it. Open the library list under the show name and click a closed one to bring it back. No more hunting for the folder.
- Remove Library from List. Right-click and choose it to take a library off your list. Nothing is deleted: the folder and its files stay where they are, and the confirmation tells you where.
- Find Libraries in Folder. Pick a folder and the app adds every library it finds in it and in the folders directly inside it. Open Library does the same when you pick a folder that holds libraries instead of being one.
- Missing folders are handled. If a library's folder has moved, click it in the list and choose Locate Folder, or take it off the list.
- Export and Import Library List. One small file holds the names, colors and folders of your libraries. Import it on another computer to rebuild the list there. The file does not carry the audio, so copy the library folders across as well. Importing never overwrites anything.
Show badge
- Show Color and Cover is one popup now. Click the badge and the popup opens right under it, with the color swatches, Other color and Automatic, plus the cover: choose a picture from the library, choose a file, or remove it.
- Drop a picture on it. Drop a JPEG or PNG on the popup and it is copied into the library and set as the cover. Anything else is turned away without importing it.
Settings and files
- Settings moved to
Altered Audio. They now live in%APPDATA%\Altered Audioinstead of a folder named after the app identifier. The first launch copies your existing settings across, checks every copy, and only then removes the old files. Nothing already in the new folder is overwritten. Portable mode is unchanged. - Backups and Cache moved next to your libraries. They now live in
Documents\Altered Audio, with Libraries and Sessions, instead of a second folder calledAltered Audio Editor. Existing folders are renamed into place, so even a large cache moves at once. If you picked your own cache folder in Settings, it is left alone.
Under the hood
- Files dragged in from the file manager now go to the smallest panel under the pointer, so a popup on top of a panel can take a drop of its own.
- More tests for the library list, the cover popup, the drop routing and the settings move.

Faster marker work, more ways to match loudness, music that ducks from track roles, and a track view with room to read.
Mixing
- Duck Music Under Voice reads Mix Role. Right-click a track header, choose Mix Role, and mark your voices Foreground and your music Ducked. With nothing selected, Duck Music Under Voice ducks every Ducked track under the Foreground tracks, in one undo step. Select a track that is not marked Ducked and it ducks just that one, as before. Sessions with no roles set behave exactly as they did. Background is still only a label for now.
- Loudness Match, more ways to match. Match by Loudness (LUFS), Peak, True Peak or Total RMS. A new Tolerance box (0.5 dB to start) leaves alone anything already that close, so a clip that is close enough is not touched. Set it to 0 for the old behavior. You can also right-click a clip and choose Loudness Match.
- QuickPass is in the Effects menu. It was only a panel before. Its Remove Silence scan is the fast way to tighten an episode: it can cut silences out and close the gap, split at each end, turn them down, or mark them.
Markers
- Pick markers in the Markers panel. Click one to select it and jump to it, Ctrl+click to add or remove, Shift+click to pick a run.
- New commands under Edit > Markers. Rename Selected Marker, Delete Selected Markers and Delete All Markers. Each is one undo step.
Track view
- New tracks open expanded, with all five header rows showing. Tracks you already have keep the height you saved. Zoom Reset (All Axes) sets every track to the new height.
- Sync Lock and Mono moved beside Invert Polarity on the Mix row, so the track name gets the room.
- Link Media on offline clips. When a clip's file has gone missing, right-click it and choose Link Media to point it at the file's new home.
Under the hood
- More tests around saving a session made by an older version, so the backup-then-save path is checked on every build.

Altered Audio Editor 0.14.0
Built for voiceover and podcast work: fixes for the things that cost you takes, checks before you deliver, and a few editing gaps closed.
New for voice work
- Delivery Check. Check Loudness has a new target, "Audiobook (RMS, peak, noise floor)". It measures the three numbers audiobook retailers ask for (average level, highest peak and noise floor), shows pass, close or fix for each, and offers a one-click master gain when gain alone would fix it. Confirm the exact limits against your retailer's current spec before you submit.
- Fill with Room Tone (Effects menu, Waveform editor). Select a gap, a cough or a cut, and it fills the selection with room tone taken from the quietest stretch elsewhere in the same file. The edges blend in, and one undo takes it back. It refuses to run when the file has no quiet stretch to borrow from.
- Plosive Tamer (Effects > Dynamics). Pulls down the low thump of "p" and "b" sounds only when they happen, and leaves the rest of the voice alone. Presets for close mic, standard mic and a light touch.
- Match EQ (Effects menu). Pick a source track and a reference track. It compares their tone, fits a Parametric EQ that moves the source toward the reference, and adds that EQ to the source track as one undo step. It matches tone only, not volume.
- Retake markers. Press F9 while recording to drop a "Retake" marker at that spot, so the bad take is easy to find when you edit. Also under Edit > Markers.
- Batch chains. Batch Convert can now trim silence from both ends, bring every file to a loudness (LUFS) without letting peaks pass a ceiling you set, and save the whole set of steps under a name. Starter chains: Podcast at -16 LUFS, Voiceover, Audiobook, and a quick peak match. Names, tags and the output folder stay per job.
Editing
- Auto Heal Selection (Ctrl+U). Repairs the selected stretch from the audio around it in one step.
- Merge Clips in the right-click menu. Right-click the selected clips and choose Merge Clips. The merged file is saved with the project files.
- Show Only Bus Tracks (track right-click menu). Hides the audio tracks so only the buses show.
- Return to Start on Stop (a toggle in the Multitrack menu). On by default. Turn it off and Stop leaves the playhead where playback ended.
- Pan law. New sessions start with a -3 dB centre. Older sessions keep their current balance behaviour, and Session Properties lets you change it.
- Convert Sample Type (File menu). Converts the open file to the sample settings you choose, saved as a new file beside the original.
Presets
- Preset packs. Export all your presets to one file and import a pack someone sends you. Importing never overwrites: a name that is already taken gets a number.
Fixes
- The Audio FX panel title now updates in layouts saved by older versions.

Altered Audio Editor 0.13.0
A big round of ready-made settings, one new way to shape dynamics, and a few editing gaps closed.
New effects
- Dynamics Curve. Draw the whole dynamics response as one curve: squeeze the loud parts, lift the quiet parts and close the gate on the very quiet parts, all in one effect. Drag up to eight points on the graph, add a point by clicking, remove one by double-clicking. A knee rounds the corners, and look-ahead lets the gain move before a loud sound arrives. Find it under Effects > Dynamics.
- Center Isolator. Keeps or removes what sits in the middle of a stereo mix, such as a lead voice. It works bin by bin, so it can pull a voice out from under music better than the simple Center Remover. Choose Keep or Remove, set how wide "the middle" is, and limit the work to a range of frequencies. Find it under Effects > Stereo and Channels.
Presets
- Built-in presets for more effects. Dynamics, Limiter, Speech Leveler, Parametric EQ, Noise Reducer, Precision Filter, Click Repair, Breath Gate, Expander and Dynamics Curve now ship with named presets for common jobs. Pick them from each effect's preset menu.
- Podcast Voice chains. New: Podcast Voice - Host, Podcast Voice - Co-Host and Podcast Voice - Guest (the old Podcast Voice 2), plus Podcast Voice - Rumble Cut and Podcast Voice - Quick Level.
- Batch recipes. Batch Convert's "Process with" list now includes a one-effect recipe for every built-in preset above, grouped as Compression, Leveling, Limiting, Breath gates, Noise reduction, Repair, Filters and EQ.
Editing
- Silence Time Selection in Selected Clips (Edit menu). Dips each selected clip's volume across the time selection, with short ramps in and out so there is no click. The audio is not changed, so the dip can be dragged or removed like any other envelope.
- Bring Clip to Front and Send Clip to Back (Clip menu). Changes which overlapping clip sits on top. Several selected clips keep their order among themselves.
- Set Current Clipboard (Edit menu). Five clipboards. Copy, Cut and Paste use the current one, so you can keep several pieces at once. The clipboards last for the session.

Libraries get easier to scan, and a few small editing gaps close.
- Library bins start folded. Open a bin to see its items. The bins you open stay open, and a search opens every bin so matches show. A library with only one section is never folded.
- Library covers. Pick a picture in a library, then choose "Use Selected Picture as Library Cover" from the Libraries menu. The cover replaces the initials badge in the panel header. "Remove Library Cover" clears it, and removing the picture from the library clears it too. The cover is saved inside the library, so it moves with the folder.
- Repeat Last Command. Edit > Repeat Last Command runs the last edit or effect again: Amplify, Normalize, the fades, Invert, Reverse, Silence, the generators, Crop, Mix Paste and clip operations such as Split, Merge and Trim. It never repeats a window, a save or playback. Effects that open a dialog open it again.
- QuickPass. Three more starting points: Keep Only the Loud Parts, Split Out Mic Bleed and Shorten a Lecture.
- Favorites. A fresh install starts with nine effects starred (Hum Cut, Noise Reducer, DC Offset, De-esser, Dynamics, Speech Leveler, Parametric EQ, Limiter and Pitch Shift). Your own stars replace the starter set as soon as you change anything.

Altered Audio Editor 0.12.5
Built-in presets for four effects. Nothing else changed.
- Limiter (10 presets). Stop at -0.1 dB, three Lift-and-stop ceilings (-0.1, -3 and -6 dB), four Squeeze strengths from Light to Crushed, Wall of Loud, and a -1 dB Streaming Ceiling. Input boost tops out at 24 dB in this limiter, so the loudest presets sit at that limit.
- Speech Leveler (5 presets). Even Out in five strengths, from Full to Tight, with the compressor and gate set to match.
- Parametric EQ (13 presets). Voice cleanup, voice presence and mud cut, rumble and hiss cuts, a telephone band, a vintage broadcast curve, a loudness lift, guitar, kick and snare shapes, and a Flat reset. Each preset sets every control, so applying one fully replaces the last.
- Dynamics (11 more, 17 in all). Sibilance control in three strengths, vocal and narration compressors, two ceiling limiters, a dense bass setting and a gentle mix bus.
- Built-in presets are listed apart from your own and cannot be edited or deleted. Save your own from the same menu as before.
- Tests now check every built-in preset against the effect's real ranges, so a preset can't ship with a value the knob can't reach.
