Sometimes, editing metadata is not straightforward. This means, a draft version should be kept somewhere while the user is editing the metadata, not affecting the published version of the metadata shown to the public.
Being able to define what type of publication to use:
- simple: Public/Private
- By group: actual privileges panel
- ...
A workflow for edit metadata can be useful on this cases, where the metadata goes through several steps, allowing the metadata to be modified on a clean and structured way. Having a workflow allows you, for example, to force a review of the metadata before making it to the public. After an editor finishes the work, it goes to a “pending review” review status, where only the reviewer can publish it.
There has been several implementations of workflows in geoNetwork, none of them enough general to make it to the trunk version. The idea is to have a simple general workflow (with basic configurations like enable or disable forced reviews) that can be extended on future implementations.
