Added

  • In the US, Australia and New Zealand, you can now set a LoRa board up on a frequency only Knit boards use.
Knit then uses the full airtime your region allows, but other people's Meshtastic radios no longer pass
    your messages on.
  • Knit now comes in Brazilian Portuguese, Spanish, Ukrainian, French and German: it follows a phone set to
one of them, and on Android 13 and later you can pick one for Knit alone in
Settings › Apps › Knit › Language. Native speakers are still checking them on Weblate, where anyone can
    suggest a fix.
  • Emoji names and emoji search follow Knit's language too: in Portuguese, "polegar" finds thumbs up and
TalkBack reads each emoji's Portuguese name. English words still find emoji in every language.
  • Select words in a message you're writing to make them bold, italic, struck through or monospace. Older
versions of Knit, and Knit for iPhone for now, show the message as plain text.
  • Long-press a message and pick Pin message to keep it in a bar under the chat's name, where a tap jumps back
to it. Each chat holds three pins, and for now they stay on your phone: nobody else in the chat sees them.
  • The menu at the top of every chat now has Search, which looks only through that chat's messages. Tapping a
result takes you back to that message.
  • You can now see when a contact or group member is typing over an internet relay, and they can see when you
are. A new Typing indicators switch in Settings › Chats turns this off both ways.
  • Stable releases on GitHub now include a slim APK, about 49 MB smaller, that leaves out internet relays,
calls, transcription and Knit Anywhere. You can switch between it and the full app without losing your
    messages.
  • A message you send a contact over LoRa now shows the LoRa mark beside its single tick once their LoRa radio
has it. The second tick still means it reached their phone.
  • In Diagnostics, long-press a node under Known, not reachable to hide it from that list, or hide them all at
once. A hidden node comes back when it next updates its profile, and Show hidden brings them all back.
  • The field log and crash report screens in Diagnostics have a Send to a chat button, which puts the file in
the chat you pick, ready to send. Knit no longer appears in those screens' share sheet, so use the button
    instead.

Changed

  • Message notifications now play Knit's own sound, a soft long-short-long chime that is K in Morse code. Only
new installs get it, so if Knit is already on your phone, its notifications keep the sound they have now.
  • Low-power mode in Settings is now a Wi-Fi Aware switch, and Battery Saver no longer turns it on. If you had
Low-power mode on, Wi-Fi Aware stays off until you switch it back on.
  • Knit now turns Wi-Fi Aware off while no nearby phone can use it, and back on when one comes into Bluetooth
range or at its check every 12 minutes. On some phones that keeps your Wi-Fi faster and your Bluetooth
    headphones steadier when you're alone.
  • When an internet relay runs more than one server for calls, Knit now relays each call through the one
nearest you, checked whenever your network changes. If that server is full as the call starts, Knit tries
    the next one.
  • The Support Knit screen now says Knit is funded by its supporters and is its developer's full-time job. The
relay screen and your profile now name your ticket key where they used to say Knit Anywhere ended or needed
    renewing.
  • Walkie-talkie bursts now stop at 30 seconds, down from 60. Your phone taps lightly when you let go, and
buzzes harder with two short beeps if a burst hits the limit while you're still holding the button.
  • Walkie-talkie calls now record your voice the way regular calls do, with your phone's own noise reduction
and volume leveling. Background noise drops, and voices sound about as loud from one phone to the next.
  • A chat now shows the Call and Mesh call buttons only when the contact's version of Knit can take that kind
of call. You no longer get a button that can only tell you they can't answer.
  • Typing indicators, link previews, content filtering and the large Bluetooth download limit have moved to a
    new Chats screen in Settings.
  • Your LoRa board now sends only messages you write, and the Bridge distant groups switch is gone. Friends
without a board still see what yours hears, but their posts no longer go out through it. Long Nearby posts
may not go over LoRa at all, and reactions and delivery checkmarks never do.
  • DMs over LoRa now go straight to your contact's board in one short packet, and the delivery checkmark comes
back the same way. Only short DMs to contacts with a board travel like this, and older versions of Knit no
longer get your DMs over LoRa.
  • To get a LoRa DM through, Knit may give your board the contact's key from their profile. That contact then
shows as a favourite in Meshtastic apps connected to your board.
  • While your LoRa board reports a busy channel, your Nearby posts wait instead of going out over LoRa, and the
Nearby room tells you so. Your DMs still go, and posts to the Meshtastic room and DM auto-replies can now
use up to half of Knit's LoRa airtime.
  • When you pick a video longer than 61 seconds, Knit now asks whether to send its first 61 seconds before it
starts shrinking it. If you cancel, nothing is sent.
  • Blocking someone now also stops their new name, status and photo from showing on your phone, and Knit no
longer downloads their photo. Until you unblock them, they show with their initial instead of a picture.
  • A photo or file your internet relays won't carry is now marked Not on relays instead of Nearby only. The
mark goes away once your contact has it, and tapping it still says why the relays won't take it.

Fixed

  • Some phones, realme models among them, could show "Knit isn't responding" for a routine check Knit runs in
the background every 15 minutes. That check no longer triggers the warning, even when the phone holds Knit
    back for a while.
  • Another app could get one of Knit's own private files, such as its settings, attached to a message you were
writing by sharing it to Knit or pasting it in. Knit now refuses to read those files.
  • Long-pressing a message while you type no longer closes the keyboard and shuffles the chat. The menu, the
full emoji picker and the delete confirmation now open over the chat as it is, with the keyboard still up.
  • Emoji search now also matches the words people use for an emoji, so "100" or "exam" finds the hundred
points emoji and "like" finds thumbs up.
  • The keycap # emoji now shows up in the emoji picker. It was missing from the grid and from search.
  • Voice notes and files no longer show up in the Nearby room. Knit never offered them there, but a modified
app could post one, and Knit can't screen either for nearby strangers.
  • A phone outside a busy group no longer sends its members the same old messages over and over, and a message
you already have no longer sends its sender a new delivery tick every ten minutes. Both used airtime and
    battery on every phone nearby.
  • Meshtastic room posts from a contact whose board runs Meshtastic 2.8.1 now show under their name instead of
as a stranger's. Meshtastic withdrew 2.8.0, so posts from a board still on it are marked "signature doesn't
    match" until it's updated.
  • Your first call now starts as soon as you let Knit use the microphone, instead of waiting for you to tap
    Call again.
  • If two contacts first messaged each other at the same moment and one of them later restored a backup, their
DMs could stop opening on one side for hours. Both phones now get back in step at the next reply.
  • On a Meshtastic board set not to sign its packets, Meshtastic room posts can be up to 200 bytes, and Knit
stops budgeting airtime for signatures the board never sends. If another app turns on encryption for Knit's
channel, setting the board up again in Knit turns it back off.
  • A portrait video waiting to be sent now shows its preview as a square, like a photo's. It used to be a
narrow strip with its length broken over two lines and mostly covered by the remove button.
  • If a contact's phone reset your chat's encryption twice within a minute, Knit could miss the second reset,
and messages in that chat could stop getting through until the next reset. Knit now applies it a minute
    later.
  • If a contact's new profile photo didn't reach you the first time, Knit now asks for it again. Before, you
could keep seeing their old photo or initials until one of you restarted Knit.
  • On a phone with no Files app, Knit closed when you went to send a file or photo, save a file, or make or
restore a backup. It now says the phone has no app for picking or saving files.

Pre-release — a test build, not a shipping release. It is not on F-Droid, is not marked
Latest, and is not what F-Droid's Binaries: URL points at. Install it only if you mean to
test it.

knit-2.11.0-alpha.4.apk — sha256:0b799d5afcc8111b898bcb8e8010b225e8ebf3684465921950a6cf29cf79321b

Signed with Knit's distribution key (certificate b18a283d11797c2a84a008c1fcb9e1b864e7b4c3b301408f7a4a80624b0e631c) — the same key every off-Play Knit
build carries — so it installs straight over an existing F-Droid, GitHub or mesh-shared install
without an uninstall, and keeps your messages.

Going back to the current stable is not possible in place: Android refuses the versionCode
downgrade, so reverting costs an uninstall and everything stored on the device with it. The next
stable release will update over this build normally.

CI verified this APK is byte-identical, apart from the signature, to an independent unsigned
rebuild produced inside F-Droid's own buildserver image — the same reproducibility gate stable
releases pass.
