Second part of bisect re-write

gitster added 30 commits August 19, 2017 23:07
Preparatory code clean-up.

* jt/sha1-file-cleanup:
  sha1_file: remove read_packed_sha1()
  sha1_file: set whence in storage-specific info fn
"git stash -u" used the contents of the committed version of the
".gitignore" file to decide which paths are ignored, even when the
file has local changes. The command has been taught to instead use
the locally modified contents.

* nm/stash-untracked:
  stash: clean untracked files before reset
An "oops" fix to a topic that is already in 'master'.

* ks/prepare-commit-msg-sample-fix:
  hook: use correct logical variable
"git rebase", especially when it is run by mistake and ends up
trying to replay many changes, spent long time in silence. The
command has been taught to show progress report when it spends
long time preparing these many changes to replay (which would give
the user a chance to abort with ^C).

* kw/rebase-progress:
  rebase: turn on progress option by default for format-patch
  format-patch: have progress option while generating patches
Conversion from uchar[20] to struct object_id continues.

* rs/object-id:
  tree-walk: convert fill_tree_descriptor() to object_id
Doc update.

* ah/doc-empty-string-is-false:
  doc: clarify "config --bool" behaviour with empty string
bash 4.4 or newer gave a warning on NUL byte in command
substitution done in "git stash"; this has been squelched.

* kd/stash-with-bash-4.4:
  stash: prevent warning about null bytes in input
"git interpret-trailers" learned to take the trailer specifications
from the command line that overrides the configured values.

* pb/trailers-from-command-line:
  interpret-trailers: fix documentation typo
  interpret-trailers: add options for actions
  trailers: introduce struct new_trailer_item
  trailers: export action enums and corresponding lookup functions
Test simplification.

* rs/t1002-do-not-use-sum:
  t1002: stop using sum(1)
Code clean-up.

* sb/sha1-file-cleanup:
  sha1_file: make read_info_alternates static
"git interpret-trailers" has been taught a "--parse" and a few
other options to make it easier for scripts to grab existing
trailer lines from a commit log message.

* jk/trailers-parse:
  pretty: support normalization options for %(trailers)
  t4205: refactor %(trailers) tests
  pretty: move trailer formatting to trailer.c
  interpret-trailers: add --parse convenience option
  interpret-trailers: add an option to unfold values
  interpret-trailers: add an option to show only existing trailers
  interpret-trailers: add an option to show only the trailers
  trailer: put process_trailers() options into a struct
When handshake with a subprocess filter notices that the process
asked for an unknown capability, Git did not report what program
the offending subprocess was running. This has been corrected.

* cc/subprocess-handshake-missing-capabilities:
  sub-process: print the cmd when a capability is unsupported
A handful of bugfixes and an improvement to "diff --color-moved".

* jt/diff-color-move-fix:
  diff: define block by number of alphanumeric chars
  diff: respect MIN_BLOCK_LENGTH for last block
  diff: avoid redundantly clearing a flag
"git commit" used to discard the index and re-read from the filesystem
just in case the pre-commit hook has updated it in the middle; this
has been optimized out when we know we do not run the pre-commit hook.

* kw/commit-keep-index-when-pre-commit-is-not-run:
  commit: skip discarding the index if there is no pre-commit hook
"git grep -L" and "git grep --quiet -L" reported different exit
codes; this has been corrected.

* as/grep-quiet-no-match-exit-code-fix:
  git-grep: correct exit code with --quiet and -L
Test fix.

* hv/t5526-andand-chain-fix:
  t5526: fix some broken && chains
Code clean-up.

* jc/diff-sane-truncate-no-more:
  diff: retire sane_truncate_fn
Code clean-up.

* sb/submodule-parallel-update:
  submodule.sh: remove unused variable
Doc fix.

* mg/format-ref-doc-fix:
  Documentation/git-for-each-ref: clarify peeling of tags for --format
  Documentation: use proper wording for ref format strings
"git interpret-trailers" has been taught a "--parse" and a few
other options to make it easier for scripts to grab existing
trailer lines from a commit log message.

* jk/trailers-parse:
  doc/interpret-trailers: fix "the this" typo
"git apply" that is used as a better "patch -p1" failed to apply a
taken from a file with CRLF line endings to a file with CRLF line
endings. The root cause was because it misused convert_to_git()
that tried to do "safe-crlf" processing by looking at the index
entry at the same path, which is a nonsense---in that mode, "apply"
is not working on the data in (or derived from) the index at all.
This has been fixed.

* tb/apply-with-crlf:
  apply: file commited with CRLF should roundtrip diff and apply
  convert: add SAFE_CRLF_KEEP_CRLF
Conversion from uchar[20] to struct object_id continues; this is to
ensure that we do not assume sizeof(struct object_id) is the same
as the length of SHA-1 hash (or length of longest hash we support).

* po/read-graft-line:
  commit: rewrite read_graft_line
  commit: allocate array using object_id size
  commit: replace the raw buffer with strbuf in read_graft_line
  sha1_file: fix definition of null_sha1
Test update to improve coverage for "git stash" operations.

* jt/stash-tests:
  stash: add a test for stashing in a detached state
  stash: add a test for when apply fails during stash branch
  stash: add a test for stash create with no files
Code clean-up.

* rs/commit-h-single-parent-cleanup:
  commit: remove unused inline function single_parent()
* master:
  The second batch post 2.14
Updates to the HTTP layer we made recently unconditionally used
features of libCurl without checking the existence of them, causing
compilation errors, which has been fixed. Also migrate the code to
check feature macros, not version numbers, to cope better with
libCurl that vendor ships with backported features.

* tc/curl-with-backports:
  http: use a feature check to enable GSSAPI delegation control
  http: fix handling of missing CURLPROTO_*
"branch --set-upstream" that has been deprecated in Git 1.8 has
finally been retired.

* ks/branch-set-upstream:
  branch: quote branch/ref names to improve readability
  builtin/branch: stop supporting the "--set-upstream" option
  t3200: cleanup cruft of a test
The API to start showing progress meter after a short delay has
been simplified.

* jc/simplify-progress:
  progress: simplify "delayed" progress API
"git archive" did not work well with pathspecs and the
export-ignore attribute.

* rs/archive-excluded-directory:
  archive: don't queue excluded directories
  archive: factor out helper functions for handling attributes
  t5001: add tests for export-ignore attributes and exclude pathspecs
Code clean-up.

* bc/vcs-svn-cleanup:
  vcs-svn: rename repo functions to "svn_repo"
  vcs-svn: remove unused prototypes

The negative value returned throughout the callchain and exit(3) ends up
getting it which is not quite right. Thus use a positive return value.

Reimplement `bisect_reset` shell function in C and add a `--bisect-reset`
subcommand to `git bisect--helper` to call it from git-bisect.sh .

Using `bisect_reset` subcommand is a temporary measure to port shell
functions to C so as to use the existing test suite. As more functions
are ported, this subcommand would be retired but its implementation will
be called by some other method.

Note: --bisect-clean-state subcommand has not been retired as there are
still a function namely `bisect_start()` which still uses this
subcommand.

Reimplement the `bisect_write` shell function in C and add a
`bisect-write` subcommand to `git bisect--helper` to call it from
git-bisect.sh

Using `--bisect-write` subcommand is a temporary measure to port shell
function in C so as to use the existing test suite. As more functions
are ported, this subcommand will be retired but its implementation will
be called by some other methods.

Note: bisect_write() uses two variables namely TERM_GOOD and TERM_BAD
from the global shell script thus we need to pass it to the subcommand
using the arguments. We then store them in a struct bisect_terms and
pass the memory address around functions.

Add a log_commit() helper function to write the contents of the commit message
header to a file which will be re-used in future parts of the code as
well.

Also introduce a function init_terms() to initialize `struct bisect_terms`,
free_terms() to free the memory of `struct bisect_terms` and set_terms() to
set the values of members in `struct bisect_terms`.

…le()

is_empty_file() can help to refactor a lot of code. This will be very
helpful in porting "git bisect" to C.

Reimplement the `check_and_set_terms` shell function in C and add
`check-and-set-terms` subcommand to `git bisect--helper` to call it from
git-bisect.sh

Using `--check-and-set-terms` subcommand is a temporary measure to port
shell function in C so as to use the existing test suite. As more
functions are ported, this subcommand will be retired but its
implementation will be called by some other methods.

check_and_set_terms() sets and receives two global variables namely
TERM_GOOD and TERM_BAD in the shell script. Luckily the file BISECT_TERMS
also contains the value of those variables so its appropriate to evoke the
method get_terms() after calling the subcommand so that it retrieves the
value of TERM_GOOD and TERM_BAD from the file BISECT_TERMS. The two
global variables are passed as arguments to the subcommand.

Reimplement `bisect_next_check` shell function in C and add
`bisect-next-check` subcommand to `git bisect--helper` to call it from
git-bisect.sh .

`bisect_voc` shell function is no longer useful now and is replaced by
using a char *[] of "new|bad" and "good|old" values.

Using `--bisect-next-check` is a temporary measure to port shell
function to C so as to use the existing test suite. As more functions
are ported, this subcommand will be retired but its implementation will
be called by some other methods.

Reimplement the `bisect_start` shell function partially in C and add
`bisect-start` subcommand to `git bisect--helper` to call it from
git-bisect.sh .

The last part is not converted because it calls another shell function
`bisect_start` shell function will be completed after the `bisect_next`
shell function is ported in C.

Using `--bisect-start` subcommand is a temporary measure to port shell
function in C so as to use the existing test suite. As more functions
are ported, this subcommand will be retired and will be called by some
other methods.

Also introduce a method `bisect_append_log_quoted` to keep things short
and crisp.
