Minus Two 1.2.1
Minus Two 1.2.1
Two fixes for Linux and the Steam Deck: the game starts with NVIDIA graphics on Linux, and the launcher can update itself on the Steam Deck again.
Questions, bug reports and news: the project's Discord server, https://discord.gg/VVthdPE4q
Fixes
- NVIDIA on Linux: the game crashed before it started (#1). NVIDIA's Linux driver crashed while the port set up its pipeline cache (
VK_KHR_pipeline_binary). That cache is now off with NVIDIA's Linux driver: the game compiles its pipelines as usual, and the driver's own shader cache keeps them between runs.MT_PIPELINE_BINARIES=1turns it back on. - Updates on the Steam Deck and Linux. The launcher could not reach GitHub on SteamOS: it looked for the system's security certificates where Ubuntu keeps them, not where SteamOS does. So it never offered updates, and Check for updates and Update showed an error. It now uses the system's own certificates.
- The game's log names the graphics driver and its version (
GPU: using …), which helps with reports like #1.
Installing
- Windows: click Update at the bottom left of the launcher, or extract
minustwo-windows.zipover yourminustwo-windowsfolder (it holds no saves or settings, so yours are kept). - Steam Deck / Linux: download
minustwo-x86_64.AppImageand put it in place of your old one, with the same name in the same folder, so your Steam shortcut keeps working. Right-click it → Properties → Permissions → tick Is executable. This has to be done by hand this once, because the launcher you have now still has the old code; later updates install from the launcher. Saves and settings are kept (they are in~/.local/share/minustwo). - Mac: nothing changes for now; 1.2.0 stays the Mac version.
| System | Download |
|---|---|
| Windows | minustwo-windows.zip |
| Linux / Steam Deck | minustwo-x86_64.AppImage |
Each file has a .sha256 beside it; the launcher's Update refuses a download that doesn't match it. No game files are included: you need your own copy of GODZILLA (CUSA02046, versions 01.01 and 01.00). Everything new in 1.2.0 is in its release notes.
Minus Two 1.2.0
Minus Two 1.2.0
A whole CPU core freed while you play, launcher pages that fit the Steam Deck's screen, and the startup options and cheats on game version 01.00.
Questions, bug reports and news: the project's Discord server, https://discord.gg/VVthdPE4q
New
A CPU core less while you play
- GODZILLA's render thread waited for the graphics card by checking, over and over without a pause, whether the card had finished the previous frame. That kept one CPU core fully busy for most of every frame. It now sleeps until the card is done.
- Measured on Windows at 4K: the render thread went from 97% of a core to 2%, and the whole game from about 1.5 cores to under half of one. The frame rate and pacing are unchanged (60 FPS, the game's own limit).
- On a Mac (title screen): the whole game went from about 1.6 cores to 0.8, still at 60 FPS.
- This should help most on the Steam Deck, where the processor has 4 cores and shares its power budget with the graphics: a core that no longer spins leaves more power for the GPU and the battery. It has not been measured on a Deck yet: reports on Discord are welcome.
Launcher pages scroll on small screens (Steam Deck)
- At 1280×800 the Game page's last settings (controller vibration and mouse camera speed) were cut off and could not be reached. Every page now scrolls when the window is shorter than it, with a scrollbar that only appears then, and a little room below the last setting.
- The mouse wheel (or a trackpad set to scroll) now scrolls the launcher on Linux and the Steam Deck. Before, it didn't, even on the Mods & patches and Achievements pages.
- Scrolling over a closed drop-down box scrolls the page instead of changing the box's setting.
Game version 01.00
- The startup options (skip logos, opening movie, tutorial) and the cheats now also work with version 01.00 of the game, not only 01.01.
Installing
On the Steam Deck and on a Mac, the launcher's Update can't reach GitHub yet, so install 1.2.0 there by hand, as below.
- Windows: click Update at the bottom left of the launcher. Or extract
minustwo-windows.zipover your existingminustwo-windowsfolder and replace the files. The zip contains no saves or settings, so yours are kept. (First install: extract it anywhere and openMinusTwo.exe; choose your GODZILLA folder on the Play page.) - Steam Deck / Linux: in Desktop Mode, download
minustwo-x86_64.AppImageand put it in place of your old one, with the same name in the same folder, so your Steam shortcut keeps working. Right-click it → Properties → Permissions → tick Is executable. Saves and settings are kept (they are in~/.local/share/minustwo). - Mac: unzip
minustwo-macos.zipand replace MinusTwo.app and Play MinusTwo.app in Applications with the new ones. Saves and settings are kept (they are in~/Library/Application Support/MinusTwo). The apps aren't signed by a developer, so the first time, right-click MinusTwo → Open.

If anything about the render thread change misbehaves, starting the game with the environment variable MT_LABEL_WAIT=0 brings back the old behaviour (on Linux: MT_LABEL_WAIT=0 ./minustwo-x86_64.AppImage). Please tell us on Discord if you need it.
Requirements
- A 64-bit x86 processor with AVX (the Steam Deck has it) and a graphics card with Vulkan 1.3 and an up-to-date driver. Linux PCs other than the Deck need glibc 2.39 or newer (SteamOS, Ubuntu 24.04+, Debian 13, Fedora).
- Mac: Apple silicon (M1 or newer), macOS 26 or newer, Rosetta 2.
Not supported yet
- Online play (VS Mode): being looked at, playing between two copies of the port by direct connection.
Minus Two 1.1.0
Minus Two 1.1.0

New
macOS (Apple silicon)
- GODZILLA now runs on Macs with Apple silicon (M1 or newer, macOS 26 or newer). The game's code runs through Rosetta 2, and the graphics run through KosmicKrisp, Mesa's Vulkan driver for Metal.
minustwo-macos.zipcontains MinusTwo.app (the launcher) and Play MinusTwo.app (starts the game straight away). Saves and settings are kept in~/Library/Application Support/MinusTwo.- On a Mac, Command-comma opens the port's menu.
One-click updates that reopen where you were
- When a new version is out, the launcher shows it at the bottom left. Update downloads it, checks it, installs it in place and reopens the launcher on the same page, at the same window position. You don't need to download or unzip anything. Saves, settings and mods are kept.
- This now works on Mac too: Update replaces MinusTwo.app (and Play MinusTwo.app when it is beside it).
- If you click Update while the game is running, the update installs once the game closes.
Startup options (launcher → Game)
- Skip startup logos: goes from the save data notices straight to the title.
- Skip opening movie: the title screen appears at once. The movie still plays if you leave the title screen alone.
- Skip tutorial: a new game opens the main menu instead of the 1954 tutorial stage. The tutorial is still available in the God of Destruction menu.
Cheats (in-game menu → Game tab, while you play; or launcher → Game)
- No damage: Godzilla's health is full again the moment he is hit.
- Infinite atomic breath: the temperature is back at its maximum right after each atomic breath.
- Unlock all kaiju: all 22 kaiju become playable, and King of Kaiju and Evolution modes offer every one of them.
⚠️ The game saves them as unlocked, so they stay unlocked after you turn the cheat off. Unlocking them also earns the Kaiju Sighting and Kaiju Collector trophies, unless achievements are off (below).
Achievements on or off (launcher → Achievements, or in-game menu → Game tab)
- Unlock achievements: turn it off and the game unlocks no trophies and shows no notices. Trophies you already have stay.
Quit to desktop
- At the bottom of the in-game menu. It asks once more first, because anything the game hasn't saved yet is lost.
Fixes
- Achievements are remembered between sessions on the Steam Deck and Mac. Trophies were never saved there, so every session started with none. They are now kept beside your saves, where the launcher's Achievements page reads them. Trophies earned before this fix could not be recovered and will unlock again when the game awards them.
- Mac: the picture was a single flat colour (the game's 4× multisampling is now off on that driver).
- Mac: the game hung on a black screen after a movie (two threads waited on the same video decoder).
Installing
- Windows / Steam Deck (1.0.0): click Update at the bottom left of the launcher.
- Windows (first install): extract
minustwo-windows.zipanywhere, for exampleC:\Games\minustwo-windows, and openMinusTwo.exe(if Windows shows "Windows protected your PC": More info, Run anyway). Choose your GODZILLA folder on the Play page, then click PLAY. - Steam Deck (first install): in Desktop Mode, copy your GODZILLA folder to the Deck or a microSD card, download
minustwo-x86_64.AppImage, right-click it → Properties → Permissions → tick Is executable, and open it. Choose the GODZILLA folder and click PLAY once (the first start prepares the game); a frame rate limit of 30 (Display & FPS page) keeps the pacing steady. For Game Mode, add the AppImage in Steam with Add a Non-Steam Game (file type "All Files") and put--playin its Launch Options. R3 + L2 opens the port's menu. - Mac (first install): unzip
minustwo-macos.zipand move MinusTwo.app and Play MinusTwo.app together into Applications. The apps aren't signed by a developer, so the first time, right-click MinusTwo → Open. Future updates install with the Update button. - Rosetta 2 is needed on Mac. If it's missing:
softwareupdate --install-rosetta --agree-to-license
