The file "p/_obj/p.8" contains the following line:

The error is most likely caused by the presence of "?".
Compiling without inlining (8g -l ...) makes the issue go away.

i started on this but won't be able to finish before going off on holiday for 2 weeks,
so unmarking started in case someone else is twiddling their thumbs.  if it's still open
in 2 weeks i will re-grab ownership.
the problem is indeed the presence of the '?' in the literal. since it is the body and
not a declaration, convincing fmt.c to leave it out, but only /in the body/ or inside a
literal, and not in declarations, would be  a simple fix.
alternately, the importing grammar should be made to deal with this, which is what i was
trying but that gets uglier.
