It should be possible to use gotest outside the go source tree without the need to
include any 
files from inside the go source tree or following the go source tree directory structure.

It would be great of gotest could operate outside the context of the go build system, 
but it's tricky. 
Right now gotest takes the contents of the *_test.go files, extracts the test methods 
and wraps a small harness around that, compiles it down, and executes it. But it 
won't know how to compile the module if you have a custom or complex compilation 
process.

I think it is acceptable to force the developer to build some additional targets so that
the gotest could locate 
easily the modules that have to be tested. The simplest solution would be to have a test
library where gotest 
will expect to find all the modules for which a test function exists (I believe gotest
is working in a similar way 
right now). So the gotest could be simply:
a) extract the test functions
b) generate the glue code to run the test functions
c) compile and link the whole stuff with the a test library that will be created from a
target provided by the 
developer
d) run the tests
The places to look for source files and libs could be given from command line options.

We understand the limitation, but it's also a simplifying assumption.
You can make gotest work in other directories by either using a
go style Makefile or at the least making the commands
make testpackage-clean
make testpackage
make importpath
behave the same way as when using a go style Makefile.

Made a quick&dirty patch for gotest, based on tip of r60.
Patches src/cmd/gotest/gotest.go only, and then gotest will acknowledge GOPATH too like
goinstall.
