v0.1.4: upscaling works in the dungeon

Choose a tag to compare

@goodshepherd23 goodshepherd23 released this 04 Nov 18:04

Upscaling, texture filtering and FXAA now work in the dungeon. Before this release, these settings only affected the BIOS logo and menus. The dungeon was always drawn at the Saturn's native 352 x 224 and stretched to fit your screen. Thanks to the player who reported it.

Why: Baroque clears the screen in the dungeon by drawing a full-screen black polygon, not with the VDP1 erase command. The renderer only started a new sharp redraw at an erase, so during play it fell back to the native picture. A full-screen opaque polygon now counts as a clear too (kit\patches\0002-dungeon-upscaling.patch).

Higher resolutions now really cost GPU time during play. On a 15 W laptop with Intel Iris Xe graphics, late frames in the dungeon were:

Internal resolution Late frames
1x 0.2%
3x (1056 x 672) 0.4-0.7%
4x 15.5%
5x 29%

If you raised the resolution before, it may now stutter in the dungeon. Open F1 > Graphics > Internal resolution and lower it. 3x is the recommended setting for integrated graphics; a dedicated graphics card should manage 6x or more.

Updating: the first launch after updating rebuilds the runtime from source with the fix. That takes a few minutes, and the build tools you already downloaded are reused. Your saves, cheats and settings are not touched.

Tested on Windows 11: a full setup run applying both patches with the optimized (PGO) build, and gameplay captures at 1x to 6x checked for real detail and frame pacing. Boot logos, title, intro movie, menus, loading screen and dungeon render correctly.

v0.1.3: bigger audio buffer

@goodshepherd23 goodshepherd23 released this 02 Nov 04:19

Less audio crackle during the boot logo. Baroque.exe now keeps twice as much sound buffered: 2048 frames (about 46 ms) instead of SaturnRecomp's 1024. On a 15 W laptop at 6x resolution, audio dropouts during the Sega Saturn boot logo fell from 12 to 1. The extra delay is about 23 ms.

  • To change it, set AudioBuffer= under [Audio] in settings.ini (in %LOCALAPPDATA%\Baroque-SaturnRecomp). Lower values, down to 256, reduce latency. Higher values, up to 8192, help on a slower PC. Without the line, the default of 2048 is used.
  • No rebuild this time. The runtime is unchanged, so updating from v0.1.2 starts the game straight away. From now on the launcher only rebuilds the runtime when the runtime itself changes, not on every kit update.

If the boot logo still stutters on your PC, lower the internal resolution in F1 (5x was smooth at boot in testing), and close heavy programs such as compilers while you play.

Tested on Windows 11: boot audio measured at 5x and 6x with 1024, 2048 and 3072 frames, and the launcher checked for the default, a custom value, out-of-range values, and skipping the rebuild on a v0.1.2 install.

Baroque (SaturnRecomp) v0.1.2

Choose a tag to compare

@goodshepherd23 goodshepherd23 released this 22 Oct 20:53

Your saves now survive updates. Saves, cheats, settings, the BIOS copy and the build tools now live in a per-user data folder, %LOCALAPPDATA%\Baroque-SaturnRecomp, instead of inside the app folder. A Quiver update replaces the whole app folder. From now on it leaves your saves and the 1 GB of build tools alone, so later updates only rebuild the runtime, without downloading the tools again.

  • Saves: %LOCALAPPDATA%\Baroque-SaturnRecomp\game\backup.bin. Paste the folder path into File Explorer's address bar to open it. Copy that file to back up your saves.
  • Moving your files: on its first launch, v0.1.2 moves what v0.1.1 kept in the app folder to the data folder. That covers game\backup.bin, cheats.txt, game.toml, console.bin, settings.ini, bios\saturn.bin and the build tools. It never overwrites a file already in the data folder, and it logs every move in launcher.log there.
  • Portable mode: an empty portable.txt next to Baroque.exe keeps everything in the app folder, as before. Updates that replace the folder will then delete your saves.
  • The setup and error logs (setup.log, game\runtime.log) are in the data folder too. Patch output now shows up in setup.log.

Updating from v0.1.1 with Quiver: v0.1.1 still keeps your save inside the app folder, and this update replaces that folder. Before updating, copy game\backup.bin out of the Baroque app folder. After updating, put it in %LOCALAPPDATA%\Baroque-SaturnRecomp\game\ (create the folder if needed), or in the new app folder's game\ folder before you first launch. Setup will also ask for your BIOS and disc again, download the build tools once more, and rebuild the runtime, which takes a few minutes. That happens only this once. If you extract the zip over your existing folder by hand, everything is moved for you, including the build tools.

Tested on Windows 11 in folders whose paths contain spaces: a fresh install, and an extract-over upgrade from a real v0.1.1 install. The upgrade test used a 64 KB save, which arrived byte-identical, and the build tools moved instead of being downloaded again.

Baroque (SaturnRecomp) v0.1.1

Choose a tag to compare

@goodshepherd23 goodshepherd23 released this 22 Oct 19:07

Higher resolution: Internal resolution now goes up to 8x; plain SaturnRecomp stops at 4x. Pick it in F1 > Graphics > Internal resolution, or set InternalScale=6 in settings.ini. At 6x Baroque renders at 2112 x 1344 (about 1440p), with much sharper walls and polygon edges.

  • Model smoothing still applies up to 4x; higher scales already smooth the edges.
  • On integrated graphics, 6x stayed at full speed in testing with the launcher's Best performance switch. Drop to 4x if you see slowdown.

Updating from v0.1.0: the next launch rebuilds the runtime automatically, which takes a few minutes.

Back up your save first. Saves live in game\backup.bin inside the game folder. A launcher update (Quiver) may replace the whole folder, and with it your saves, cheats.txt, settings.ini and the build tools. Copy game\backup.bin somewhere safe before updating, then put it back afterwards. If you extract the zip over your existing folder by hand, your files are kept.

Fixed in v0.1.2: saves, settings and build tools now live in %LOCALAPPDATA%\Baroque-SaturnRecomp, outside the app folder, so later updates keep them. This warning still applies to v0.1.1 itself, including the update from v0.1.1 to v0.1.2.

Baroque (SaturnRecomp) v0.1.0

Choose a tag to compare

@goodshepherd23 goodshepherd23 released this 22 Oct 18:16

First release of the Baroque (Sega Saturn, 1998) kit for the SaturnRecomp runtime.

Download Baroque-SaturnRecomp-v0.1.0-windows-x64.zip, extract it, and run Baroque.exe. In Quiver Launcher, just press Play.

On first launch, setup asks for your own Saturn BIOS and your Baroque (Japan, T-33901G) .cue file. The English fan translation is supported. Setup then downloads a portable compiler (about 1 GB) and builds SaturnRecomp from the author's public source, which takes about 5 to 10 minutes. Later launches start straight away.

What's included:

  • Fixes that get Baroque from boot into full gameplay: CD GetSectorInfo, the master SH-2 DMA-end interrupt, and saves that persist
  • Widescreen (Baroque's own 16:9 mode), Action Replay codes, and keyboard focus from launchers
  • A performance profile recorded from Baroque gameplay; full speed on a 15 W laptop
  • While you play, Windows' power mode is switched to Best performance, and your setting is restored when you quit

No BIOS, game data or SaturnRecomp code is included. See the README for details. Developed with AI assistance (Claude).
