HelloNotes now runs its AI on Apple Foundation Models — on your device, or on an open model you already have — and the window has been rearranged around one idea: the collection on the left, the note in the middle, what the note is on the right.

This release requires macOS 27 (and iOS / iPadOS 27 on the App Store), and the Mac app is Apple silicon only. Every AI feature is built on the 27 Foundation Models API.

App Store approval is pending. This download is the Mac app, 1.3.3, today. The App Store — Mac, iPhone and iPad — has 1.3.2 until Apple approves 1.3.3.

Updated 12 October (build 32). The download was replaced the day it went out, with fixes found straight after — listed under Fixed in build 32 below. If you downloaded 1.3.3 earlier, download it again; the checksum at the foot of this page is the new file's.

AI that runs where you are

  • Choose where it runs: Apple's model on your device (the app calls it System), or an open model run on your Mac with MLX. On the Mac, Access MLX Models… in Settings ▸ AI points at the folder your other MLX tools already use.
  • Third-party AI services and API keys are gone. Any keys you had stored for them are deleted from this device.
  • Summaries cover the whole of a long note, not just its opening. Tag suggestions come back in the note's own language, and link suggestions only ever name notes you have.
  • The Assistant looks through your notes before it answers, and changes nothing without your approval. Several changes proposed at once wait their turn instead of failing.

One window, three regions

  • The sidebar is the collection: Recents and Bookmarks, then each open collection and its folders, with the collection's tools above them — Mind Map, Assistant, Ask Your Library, Git — and a + for folders and collections.
  • The bar over the note is three buttons: + for a new note in any of its forms, search (Search Notes, Open Quickly, Find & Replace), and Settings — then your tabs.
  • The panel on the right is the open note's: Summary & Outline, Tags, Links, Properties, History, Graph.
  • The Graph is one note's links in and out. The Mind Map is the links across the whole collection, drawn as a mind map, and it opens as a tab beside your notes — as the Assistant and Ask Your Library do. Nothing opens a window of its own unless you ask for one.

Writing

  • Find and Replace understands regular expressions.
  • Return continues a list, and ends it on an empty item.
  • A note scrolls past its last line, so the end of what you are writing is not pinned to the bottom of the window.
  • The blank lines you type are shown in Edit, instead of being swallowed as Markdown swallows them.
  • Typing in a heading no longer redraws the whole note after each keystroke.

Fixed

  • iPad, held upright: the on-screen keyboard changed the window's layout as it came up, which sent the keyboard away again — a note could not be typed in, and the Assistant never settled.
  • Mac: a link into the app (the widget's, for one) opened another main window every time. It opens in the window you have.
  • The four view modes — Edit, Preview, Markdown, Split — each announce their own name to VoiceOver.
  • On iPhone, the AI and Tags places' title bar runs the width of the screen.

Fixed in build 32

  • A link that launches the app opens its note — a tap on the widget with HelloNotes closed used to open the app and nothing more.
  • Typing [[ or #: the list of suggestions has a keyboard. ↓ and ↑ choose, Return or Tab inserts, Esc closes it. Nothing is chosen until you press an arrow, so Return on its own is still a new line.
  • Restoring a version from History asks first, since Undo cannot bring back what it replaces.
  • Git: Commit now commits a deleted note (it used to stay pending for ever); a change you approve from the Assistant is committed on its own, without everything else that was uncommitted, and never in a cloud folder; creating a repository can no longer delete a file of the same name.
  • Quick Capture and dictation add to today's note even when it is open with unsaved typing, instead of asking you to choose between the two — and say so, and give the text back, if it could not be added.
  • Links in Edit are drawn in your accent colour on the Mac, as in Preview, and a link to a note that does not exist is grey.
  • The Link button in the Links view works for a mention that uses a note's alias.
  • The Assistant and AI settings say what a web search sends.
  • On iPhone and iPad with a keyboard, ↑ on a note's first line moves to its title, as on the Mac.
