HMRC Design System

What is it?

Within HMRC we are developing a Design System to enable us to build services that are consistent with each other and the rest of government. Part of this Design System is a library of components and patterns.

Many of the components and patterns that Designers should use when creating designs for new services will be documented in a new GOV.UK Design System. However, when a user need isn’t met by any of the GOV.UK patterns it can be found or contributed to the HMRC Design System.

We aim to contribute HMRC’s patterns to the GOV.UK Design System where appropriate.

Contributing a Design Pattern

🚨 These guidelines are a work in progress. We’ll be improving them over time as more patterns are contributed by service teams. 🚨

If you need something that isn’t already documented in either the GOV.UK or HMRC Design Systems then please raise an issue.

In the issue you should clearly explain why your proposed pattern meets the following standards and add any user research results you have to back it up.

Before being considered for inclusion in the Design System, a component or pattern must be:

Standard Component Pattern
Useful It addresses a user need that’s shared by multiple services It addresses a user need that’s shared by multiple services
Unique It should meet a unique user need which isn’t currently met by another component in the Design System (unless intended to replace it) It should meet a unique user need which isn’t currently met by another pattern in the Design System (unless intended to replace it)

A member of the HMRC Design System Working Group will respond to your issue.
