Linux old — one-off v1.8.5 build

Additional x86_64 packages are available for older Linux systems:

Built once from the unmodified v1.8.5 Source code ZIP on Debian 12 (glibc 2.36). The packaged node-pty module requires GLIBC versions up to 2.34, replacing the 2.42 requirement in the original Linux packages. Other Electron, graphics and system requirements still apply; this does not guarantee compatibility with every older distribution.

The production build and its included type checks completed. Launch and terminal operation on the affected system have not been tested. These packages contain v1.8.5 source, without subsequent local fixes.

This is a one-off build, with no ongoing old-Linux support or separate update channel. Automatic updates still use the standard Linux packages and may reintroduce incompatible system-library requirements. For future versions, follow the project and build the selected release's Source code ZIP on your own system using its required toolchain: npm ci followed by npm run package:linux. Rebuilding native modules cannot make an Electron version support an OS that Electron itself no longer supports.

CanvasTTY 1.8.5 brings the beta2 improvements to the stable channel, adds experimental desktop-window embedding on Windows and Linux, and improves Settings, Browser and cross-platform reliability.

What's new

  • Search Settings in English or Russian and jump directly to matching groups. The search field sits higher in the sidebar, with SL UI label animation and highlights that preserve the content bounds.
  • Embed real application windows in canvas cards through the permission-checked Desktop SDK. This release preserves @fatalbazuka's Windows contribution (commit author: bbutterm) and adds a separate Linux X11/XWayland backend and Linux Desktop reference plugin, including canvas clipping, HUD layering and native input.
  • Carry forward beta2 terminal-rendering optimizations, prompt-delivery reliability and provider launch-mode improvements.

Fixes

  • Preserve saved Browser tabs before lazy restoration; improve native focus, fullscreen visibility, download actions and trackpad history navigation.
  • Use the live local shell directory for Files and complete Linux system-file opening without waiting for an unavailable Electron callback.
  • Preserve terminal renderers when closing the macOS main window, continue shutdown after independent service failures, and improve usage-history storage and report navigation.
  • Preserve Windows Codex screenshot paste with Ctrl+V and configured paste shortcuts. Ignore stale events from replaced desktop helpers and finish cleanup after failed helper launches.
  • Remove the Linux native viewport when an embedded application closes or hides, and avoid reopening a closed/tray window during detach or host exit. Hiding a card keeps its live client attached.

Contributors and included pull requests

Thank you to the contributors whose work is included in this release:

  • @cododel — saved Browser tab preservation (#172), native Browser hiding during terminal fullscreen (#173), first-click address focus (#174), live shell directory selection in Files (#175), download icon/count layout (#176), and trackpad history navigation (#178). The original contributor commits are included in the release history.
  • @teo-nex (commit author: Teo) — terminal output, state and plugin-lifecycle fixes from #170, selectively adapted for the shared cross-platform implementation; see the integration record. Also macOS terminal-renderer preservation, resilient shutdown, compressed usage-history snapshots and report navigation from #171, whose original contributor commits are retained.
  • @fatalbazuka (commit author: bbutterm) — bilingual Settings search (#180), provider-limit settings navigation (#181), the permission-checked Windows Desktop SDK (#182), and Windows Codex screenshot paste (#183). The original contributor commits are retained. The earlier combined proposal #179 was superseded by #180–182 and is not counted as a separate feature.
  • @howdeploy — the beta optimization and reliability work, Linux X11/XWayland desktop backend and reference plugin, canvas/HUD integration and combined platform fixes (#184), Settings search styling and highlight fixes (#185), and stable-release lifecycle fixes, regression coverage and CI preparation (#186).

Some PR pages remain marked closed without a direct merge because their commits were integrated through the combined branches. The attribution above reflects the shipped source, not only GitHub's direct-merge labels.

Downloads

  • Linux x86_64: AppImage or Debian package.
  • Windows x64: setup installer or portable executable.
  • macOS Apple Silicon: DMG or ZIP. An Intel macOS build is not included.
  • CanvasLink Android installers are included from the pinned companion release.

Compatibility and known limits

Desktop embedding is experimental. Both CanvasTTY and the selected Linux app must use X11/XWayland; native Wayland and macOS embedding are unsupported. Foreign GPU surfaces, app-owned dialogs and Windows DPI/elevation differences remain compatibility limits. Abrupt destruction of Electron can destroy embedded Linux windows and lose unsaved application data. The Linux ChatGPT-close fix has regression coverage; manual acceptance of that exact scenario is still outstanding.

Windows installers are unsigned. The macOS build is ad-hoc signed, without Apple notarization. Optional GitHub sign-in for the plugin showcase is unavailable in this build; anonymous browsing remains available.

The previously recorded beta.1 limitations around regions overlapping HOME, manual nested-Codex restoration and conservative region sorting have not been established resolved. This release does not claim that every previously reported performance issue is fixed.

Original contributor commits are retained in main. See the full changelog, Russian changelog, and Desktop SDK documentation.
