HowFar, a free Garmin data field that shows the time to the next checkpoint of your course, learned from how you climb and descend.

epix Pro (Gen 2) 42 mm HowFar-epix2pro42mm.prg
epix Pro (Gen 2) 47 mm HowFar-epix2pro47mm.prg
epix Pro (Gen 2) 51 mm HowFar-epix2pro51mm.prg

How to install: connect the watch with its cable, open the GARMIN → Apps folder (on a Mac, with the free app OpenMTP) and copy the file there. If you have an older HowFar file there, replace it. Step by step: https://howfar-garmin.github.io/howfar/#install

Copied this way, HowFar has no settings, so the course profile can't be pasted. It works fully otherwise; the settings work when HowFar is installed from the Connect IQ Store.

New in this version

  • Main and minor points. The big number counts down to main checkpoints. Minor points, like a col or a hut you added on the race prep page, are shown on the way with their time from now. You choose which is which on the race prep page.
  • On a full screen, the points around the checkpoint, in the order you'll reach them: minor points above the name, as many as fit (the last one counts any further ones, as in Lac du Fond in 1:05 (+2)), and the next main checkpoints below the number, each with its leg's moving time (then Valgrisenche +1:25). The arrival time sits beside the number.
  • On a smaller field, like half the screen, just the countdown: the checkpoint, the time and the arrival. Put HowFar on two data screens to have both.
  • A coloured dot beside each time shows how far off it may be: green with less than 45 minutes to go (usually within 5 minutes), yellow up to 2 hours (usually within 15), red beyond.
  • Times rounded to what can really be known: to 30 minutes beyond four hours, 15 beyond two, 5 beyond one.
  • Learning on the run only. The setting for a pace from past races is gone: in tests it helped little and sometimes hurt. HowFar learns within the first few kilometres, fills in slopes you haven't run yet today from the nearest ones, and what it remembers from earlier runs counts less and less as the race goes on.
  • The field's words in Italian, French and German, following the watch's language.
