Linux

  • .deb: sudo apt install ./DEIXIS_0.1.2_amd64.deb (apt brings WebKitGTK and the tray library); sudo apt remove deixis removes it.
  • AppImage: chmod +x, then run it. It needs FUSE 2 (libfuse2, or libfuse2t64 on Ubuntu 24.04); without it, start it with --appimage-extract-and-run.
  • Your library goes to ~/.local/share/deixis (or $XDG_DATA_HOME/deixis) and stays when you remove the app.
  • Keys go to the desktop keyring (GNOME Keyring, or KWallet on recent KDE). Without one, Settings says so and keeps them for the session, or in a file only you can read if you choose that.
  • Closing the window quits DEIXIS. Quitting, a crash or a forced kill ends every process DEIXIS started, including ones that left its process group.
  • Not checked: the built-in local models in Settings.

All platforms

  • Scanned PDFs are read (OCR) without installing Tesseract. The package carries the English and Turkish language data.
  • The window and its first frame follow the theme set in Settings, so a dark theme no longer starts on a white frame.
  • Once a day DEIXIS asks GitHub whether a newer version exists and says so in the sidebar. GitHub sees only your IP address. Turn it off in Settings → About.
  • Exports now download on Linux. Before this fix the Linux window refused them.

What was checked on these exact files

  • Linux packages, on GitHub's Ubuntu 22.04 and 24.04 runners under a virtual display: all 23 rows passed on both versions. These covered install, the window, a setting saved from the window, the PDF tab, report and CSV downloads (the second copy gets a new name and nothing else in the home folder changes), Quit, a killed shell and a killed backend leaving no DEIXIS process, the AppImage without FUSE, and removal keeping the library byte for byte. The test suite passed on an Ubuntu 24.04 runner.
  • Mac DMG on macOS 27: 18 rows passed, including OCR, the dark first frame and downloads. Two were left for a person: the menu-bar menu, and a local model server.
  • Windows installer: 11 rows passed in a Windows 11 virtual machine (ARM64, running the x64 build under emulation): install without administrator rights, the window, a setting saved from the window, a second launch, closing the window keeps the app running, Quit, a killed shell and a killed backend (the stopped page and Restart), OCR, report and CSV downloads, and uninstall keeping the library. The notification-area menu was left for a person. On GitHub's x64 runner the installer built and the backend passed its own checks.

Not checked

A real Linux desktop session (tray menu, keyring prompts, file manager), the Linux packages on distributions other than Ubuntu, Windows 10, an ordinary x64 Windows PC outside CI, and an upgrade from 0.1.1 to 0.1.2 on any platform.

DEIXIS 0.1.1 (Windows preview, Mac)

Pre-release

@huguryildiz huguryildiz released this 07 Nov 00:09

The first Windows build of DEIXIS, plus the Mac app rebuilt from the same code. A prerelease.

File For SHA-256
DEIXIS_0.1.1_x64-setup.exe (43.2 MB) Windows 10 and 11, x64 e14f5d47c6da0a6b6b00ee9bd10e6272f10ef46c83dbf5e5a3b01978eb111775

Check a download: Get-FileHash .\DEIXIS_0.1.1_x64-setup.exe on Windows, shasum -a 256 DEIXIS_0.1.1_aarch64.dmg on a Mac. Install steps are in the README.

Windows

  • The installer is per user and asks for no administrator rights. The app goes to %LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\DEIXIS, and your library to %LOCALAPPDATA%\DEIXIS. Uninstalling removes the app and leaves the library.
  • The installer is not signed. SmartScreen may stop it: choose More info, then Run anyway.
  • Closing the window keeps DEIXIS in the notification area. Quit stops it and everything it started. If the app is force-closed or its backend crashes, Windows ends every process DEIXIS started, model programs and PDF readers included.
  • Not in this preview: the built-in local models in Settings, and reading arXiv LaTeX sources (the PDF is read instead). OCR needs Tesseract from the UB Mannheim installer.

Mac

The same app as 0.1.0, with these fixes in the window shell:

  • A restart can no longer be covered by the "backend stopped" page of an earlier start.
  • The start message reads correctly when the data folder's path has non-English letters.
  • A reader that stops is now named as such instead of "PDF could not be read"; a memory limit is named only when there is evidence of it.

What was checked on these exact files

  • Windows installer, in a Windows 11 virtual machine (ARM64, running the x64 build under emulation), all 11 rows passed:
    • install, then a second launch;
    • the research screen;
    • a setting saved from inside the window;
    • closing the window keeps the app running;
    • the notification-area menu;
    • a report and a CSV download;
    • uninstall.
    • Quit, a force-closed app and a killed backend each left no DEIXIS process, also with a model call and a PDF read running at the time.
  • Windows on GitHub's x64 runner: the test suite (1563 passed), the backend on its own (15/15 checks), and the installer build.
  • Mac DMG on macOS 27: 15 of 15 automatic rows passed. The menu-bar menu and a local model server were not checked automatically.

Not checked

Windows 10, an ordinary x64 PC outside CI, SmartScreen on a fresh download, user names with non-English letters on a real install, and an upgrade from one installed version to the next.

DEIXIS 0.1.0 (Mac, Apple Silicon, prerelease)

Choose a tag to compare

@huguryildiz huguryildiz released this 06 Nov 19:09

First packaged build of DEIXIS: a Mac app for Apple Silicon (M1 and newer). This is a prerelease, tried on one Mac running macOS 27.

Download: DEIXIS_0.1.0_aarch64.dmg (57.7 MB)

SHA-256: 1e2ff2c56b0aed0f208aafb97b01753eed2d15effb10c88719686712dfc7ea86

Check it after downloading:

shasum -a 256 DEIXIS_0.1.0_aarch64.dmg

Install

  1. Open the DMG and drag DEIXIS into Applications.

  2. The app is not signed with an Apple Developer ID, so macOS blocks the first launch. Open DEIXIS once, then go to System Settings → Privacy & Security and choose Open Anyway. Or run this once in Terminal:

    xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/DEIXIS.app

How it behaves

  • DEIXIS opens in its own window. Closing the window keeps it running in the menu bar. Quit (menu bar or Cmd+Q) stops the app and every program it started.
  • If the app is force-quit or crashes, a small watchdog stops what it left behind within a few seconds.
  • Your library is kept in ~/Library/Application Support/DEIXIS. Deleting or replacing the app does not touch it.
  • There is no automatic update. To update, download a newer DMG and replace the app.

Not included

  • Model connections: install Codex, Claude Code or Gemini CLI yourself, or paste an API key in Settings.
  • OCR for scanned PDFs needs Tesseract: brew install tesseract.
  • Intel Macs, Windows and Linux builds.

What was checked on this build

The DMG installs and passes the code-signature check. The window opens with the research screen, a setting saved from the window is stored, a second launch reuses the open app, closing the window keeps everything running, and a Markdown report and a table CSV download into ~/Downloads. Quit, a forced quit and a killed backend left no DEIXIS processes behind, including model CLIs and PDF readers that were running at the time. The menu-bar item was seen; its menu (Open, running count, Quit) has not been checked yet.
