A desktop cat for macOS and Windows that gets chonkier as your memory fills up.

Fixed in 0.3.3 — 0.3.2 lined the cat's shape up with his name, but only in
English. In Korean the names were four stages where the pictures were six, so the
cat changed shape at points the label did not. Korean now has six stages on the
same thresholds — 60 / 70 / 80 / 90 / 96% — and the label reads 상태 instead
of 기분.

Nothing changes if you use Memory Cat in English. The chonk chart is untouched.

The cat still follows your memory by default — close a few apps and watch him slim down within seconds. Right-click → What makes him chonky to switch to storage, or to whichever is fuller.

The installer builds the app and sets it to start at login. Remove it with ./uninstall_mac.command. This path works on Intel Macs too, and does not trip the warning below.

  1. Download the file for your Mac below and unzip it.
  2. Drag Memory Cat.app into your Applications folder.
  3. Open it once — see below, because the steps changed in macOS 15.

Why macOS refuses the first time

The app is not code-signed, so double-clicking makes macOS say "Apple could not verify 'Memory Cat' is free of malware." That is Apple's rule about signatures, not an error.

On macOS 15 (Sequoia) and later, the dialog only offers Done and Move to Trash — right-clicking no longer helps. Press Done, then open System Settings → Privacy & Security, scroll to the bottom, and press Open Anyway next to "Memory Cat" was blocked. That row only appears right after a blocked launch.

On macOS 11–14, right-click the app → Open, then click Open again.

Either way you only do this once. After that it opens normally.

To start it at login, run it once, then enable it in System Settings → General → Login Items & Extensions.

Windows

Download MemoryCat.exe below and run it. Nothing to install.

The .exe is built by GitHub Actions from this repository, so the build log is public and the checksum below comes from that run.

Windows will warn you

The executable is not signed either, so SmartScreen shows "Windows protected your PC." Click More info → Run anyway. Some antivirus software flags PyInstaller executables as a false positive; if yours does, you can build it yourself from the windows/ folder.

The Windows build has the cat, disk / RAM / swap readouts, top memory consumers, four themes, four sizes, and a Korean / English toggle. The AI features — diagnosis, pet themes, cleanup — are macOS only. In exchange it has no OpenAI dependency and makes no network requests at all.

Memory Cat works without a key. (It still watches your disk and memory.)

Put an OPENAI_API_KEY in ~/Library/Application Support/Memory Cat/.env and the 🐾 What did you eat? diagnosis can clear disk space (Trash, caches, old downloads), and you can build a theme from a photo of your own pet.
Only the photo and your usage numbers are sent — file names and paths are never sent.

The Windows build bundles PySide6 (LGPL). Its source and build script are in windows/, and the executable here is built from them by GitHub Actions.

한국어

메모리가 찰수록 뚱뚱해지는 macOS 바탕화면 고양이입니다.

0.3.3 에서 고친 것 — 0.3.2 에서 고양이 모습과 이름을 같은 지점에서 바꾸게
했는데, 영어만 그랬습니다. 한국어 이름은 네 단계뿐이라, 그림은 다섯 번 바뀌는
동안 이름은 세 번만 바뀌었습니다.

이제 한국어도 여섯 단계이고, 문턱은 영어와 같은 60 / 70 / 80 / 90 / 96% 입니다.
그림이 바뀌는 바로 그 지점에서 이름도 바뀝니다.

기본값은 여전히 메모리입니다. 앱을 몇 개 닫으면 몇 초 안에 홀쭉해지는 게 보입니다. 우클릭 → 무엇으로 뚱뚱해질까 에서 저장공간으로 바꿀 수 있습니다.

앱 설치, 로그인 시 자동 실행 등록까지 알아서 합니다. 제거는 ./uninstall_mac.command 로 진행하면 됩니다.

  1. 아래에서 내 맥에 맞는 파일을 받아 압축을 풉니다.
  2. Memory Cat.app 을 응용 프로그램 폴더로 드래그합니다.
  3. 처음 한 번은 아래 방법으로 엽니다. macOS 15부터 방법이 바뀌었습니다.

처음에 안 열리는 이유

이 앱은 코드 서명이 되어 있지 않습니다. 그냥 더블클릭하면 macOS에서 "Apple이 악성 소프트웨어가 없는지 확인할 수 없습니다" 라는 경고를 띄웁니다. (버전별 애플의 지침으로 인함이지 보안문제나 에러는 아닙니다)

macOS 15 (Sequoia) 이상에서는 그 창에 완료 와 휴지통으로 이동 만 있고 여는 버튼이 없습니다. 우클릭도 통하지 않습니다. 완료를 누른 뒤 시스템 설정 → 개인정보 보호 및 보안에서 맨 아래로 내려가면 "Memory Cat"이(가) 차단되었습니다 옆에 그래도 열기 버튼이 있습니다. 이 항목은 차단 직후에만 보이니, 앱을 먼저 한 번 눌러 주세요.

macOS 11~14에서는 앱을 우클릭 → "열기" 를 선택하고, 다시 한 번 "열기" 를 누르시면 됩니다.

어느 쪽이든 처음 한 번만 하면 됩니다. 그 뒤로는 더블클릭으로 열립니다.

맥 재시동 후 로그인할 때 자동으로 뜨게 하려면 앱을 한 번 실행한 뒤
시스템 설정 → 일반 → 로그인 항목 및 확장 프로그램에서 켜 주세요.

API 키 없이도 Memory Cat은 정상 동작합니다. (메모리 감시 가능)

만약 OPENAI_API_KEY 를 ~/Library/Application Support/Memory Cat/.env 에 넣으면
"🐾 뭘 먹은 거야?" 진단으로 디스크 (휴지통·캐시·다운로드)를 정리하는 기능과 내 반려동물 사진으로 테마 만들기 기능을 추가로 사용할 수 있습니다.
사진과 사용량 수치만 전송되고, 파일 이름이나 경로는 보내지 않습니다.

Windows

아래 MemoryCat.exe 를 받아서 실행하시면 됩니다. 따로 설치할 것은 없습니다.

exe 는 이 저장소에서 GitHub Actions 로 빌드합니다. 빌드 로그가 공개되어 있고, 아래 체크섬은 그 빌드에서 나온 값입니다.

실행할 때 경고가 뜹니다

exe도 코드 서명이 없어서 SmartScreen이 "Windows의 PC를 보호했습니다" 를 띄웁니다. 추가 정보 → 실행을 누르시면 됩니다. 백신이 PyInstaller로 만든 exe를 오탐으로 막는 경우도 있는데, 그럴 때는 windows/ 폴더의 안내를 따라 직접 빌드하실 수 있습니다.

Windows판에는 고양이, 디스크·램·스왑 표시, 메모리 많이 쓰는 앱 목록, 테마 4종, 크기 4종, 한국어/English 전환이 있습니다. AI 기능(진단·펫 테마·정리)은 macOS 전용입니다. 대신 OpenAI 의존성이 없고 네트워크 요청을 전혀 하지 않습니다.
