@ilikemacos ilikemacos released this 01 Nov 05:42
becb1fd

What's new

  • Now based on Ubuntu 26.04 LTS with KDE Plasma. No Snap.
  • Runs on 2 GB RAM: zram swap, no blur or animations, file indexing off.
  • Three downloads: 64-bit, 32-bit and ARM64.
  • FrameFX Linux Beta11 is in the dock.
  • Install App lets you pick which drive an app goes on.
  • Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) shows CPU and GPU clock speeds, usage and temperatures, plus a process list.
  • The start menu has Lock, Sign out, Sleep, Restart and Shut down.
  • Settings opens to a tiled home: Display, Network, Apps, Updates and Storage.

Upgrading from 1.0.0

1.0.0 was based on Arch, so 1.0.1 is a fresh install. It wipes the disk you install it on. Back up first.

Download

Each file boots straight to the KDE desktop as a live system.

PC File Size SHA-256

Write it to a USB stick of 2 GB or more. This erases the stick.

  • Rufus on Windows: pick the .iso. If Rufus asks, choose DD Image mode.
  • balenaEtcher on Windows, macOS or Linux: pick the .iso and flash.
  • Linux: sudo dd if=halcyraos-1.0.1-x86_64.iso of=/dev/sdX bs=4M status=progress conv=fsync

Requirements

  • 2 GB RAM
  • 64-bit or 32-bit x86 PC with UEFI or legacy BIOS, or an ARM64 machine with UEFI (turn Secure Boot off)
  • 20 GB disk

Known issues

  • Not yet tested on real hardware.
  • The 32-bit build uses Debian 12 with Plasma 5, so its top bar is plain and has no clock.
  • The live system keeps changes in memory only, so they are gone after a restart.

@ilikemacos ilikemacos released this 28 Oct 23:16

Gaming test build for AvenorOS. This is a pre-release for benchmarking on real hardware. It is not a replacement for 1.0.0.

What's new

  • Low-latency CPU scheduler: scx_lavd (sched_ext) on the stock kernel
  • gamemode, which switches the CPU to performance while a game runs
  • amd-pstate in active mode
  • sysctl tuning for games (memory and scheduler settings)
  • zram compressed swap
  • Steam with Proton
  • NVIDIA and Radeon (Mesa) graphics drivers
  • MangoHud for frame-time logging
  • The /usr slot is now 4 GB (was 3 GB). The ISO is 5.56 GB.

Known limits

  • Idle RAM is about 1.1 GB in a VM, up from about 950 MB in 1.0.
  • Not tested on real hardware yet. amd-pstate could not be checked in the VM.
  • Steam starts, but its first launch was not seen finishing in testing.
  • No installer. Run it live from a USB stick.
  • The version string inside the image still says 0.3.2.

Download

The zip is over GitHub's 2 GiB file limit, so it is split into two parts. Download both, then join them:

Linux/macOS:

cat avenoros-1.1.0-gaming.1-x86_64.zip.001 avenoros-1.1.0-gaming.1-x86_64.zip.002 > avenoros-1.1.0-gaming.1-x86_64.zip

Windows (cmd):

copy /b avenoros-1.1.0-gaming.1-x86_64.zip.001 + avenoros-1.1.0-gaming.1-x86_64.zip.002 avenoros-1.1.0-gaming.1-x86_64.zip

Unzip it and write avenoros-0.3.2-x86_64.iso to a USB stick of 8 GB or more.

BeamNG test

Run the same BeamNG.drive replay three times on Windows 11 and three times on AvenorOS, with the same settings and on the same GPU, then compare 1% and 0.1% lows with bench/beamng-lows. Full steps are in bench/README.md.

AvenorOS 1.0.0

@ilikemacos ilikemacos released this 28 Oct 01:05

First public release of AvenorOS.

The zip holds a hybrid ISO. Write it to a USB stick with Rufus (or dd), or attach it to a VM as a disc or USB drive. It runs live from the stick; there's no installer yet, so nothing is written to your disk.

Built from the 0.3.2 image, so the version string inside still reads 0.3.2.
