CrescentPDF is a free PDF reader and editor for Windows 10 and 11. No ads, no account, no upsells, and it never goes online: everything happens on your PC.

What it does

  • Read: big files open in about a quarter of a second, tabs you can drag between windows (every window comes back next time), search across files and folders, Night Pages that keeps photos in true color, Read Aloud, a Reading Ruler, Split View, Presentation Mode and link previews.
  • Mark up: highlights, sticky notes with replies, text boxes, shapes, stamps, pictures, measuring, and a pen with pressure and palm rejection. Marks made in other programs can be moved, resized and deleted too. Margin Notes flow around the printed text.
  • Change the document: edit text right on the page, find and replace with a preview, Arrange Pages (undo works even after saving), merge, split, crop, resize and straighten scanned pages, page labels, page numbers, Bates numbers, headers, footers and watermarks.
  • Forms: fill in and sign forms right on the page, and make any PDF fillable with Form Builder, which can find the blanks for you, even on a scan. Export the answers from a pile of filled-in forms to Excel or CSV, or fill many copies from a spreadsheet.
  • Passwords and OCR: add or remove passwords, and make scans searchable on your PC in twenty languages.
  • Compare: see every added, removed, moved and changed word between two versions, and export a redline PDF, a list of changes or a spreadsheet.
  • Make a timeline: every date in a set of documents in order, with who, what and the page, ready to export as a PDF, Excel or CSV.
  • Print: a Print window that shows every sheet before it prints: several pages a sheet, booklets, posters across several sheets, two-sided and grayscale, with your own saved settings.
  • Export: Word, Excel, CSV, PowerPoint, a web page, EPUB, image-only PDF, PDF/A, images and text. Batch runs the same jobs on a whole folder.
  • Make it yours: Ctrl+K finds any tool, three toolbar setups, and a toolbar, menus, keyboard shortcuts and colors you can rearrange.

Nothing is written to a PDF until you save, and replacing a file always asks first.

Installing

The installers aren't code-signed yet, so the first time Windows may say "Windows protected your PC". Click More info, then Run anyway.

  • The .exe installs just for you, with no administrator rights needed.
  • The .msi installs per user as it comes, or for everyone on the PC with: msiexec /i CrescentPDF-1.0.0.msi ALLUSERS=1

Requires Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit) and about 411 MB of disk space.
