Help contributing for university

I have the good fortune to be able to contribute to IPFS for one of my university courses, and I would appreciate any assistance to help me best accomplish that. Ideally, the work I do would be substantial enough to merit devoting an entire semester to, but I would be willing to start small and work my way up. I also added an item to the agenda for the upcoming All Hands call on Monday in case there is enough time to discuss this.

Hey @goldani, from your previous messages you said youre more interested in contributing to python than go, right? If youre okay learning go, then i can help point you to various issues you can work on and help out more in general. If you want to stick with python, then you're going to have to implement a lot of supporting python libraries from scratch, and there will be less mentorship in general from the team (since none of the core ipfs team work in python). Let me know what you think and I can help you out with where to start in either case.

Hi @whyrusleeping, you raise a really good point about working on the Python implementation that I hadn't considered. I'd also appreciate mentorship along the way, so I will start learning Go. I do have some experience with JavaScript. How involved is the core team with js-ipfs?

Hi @goldani, the core team currently focuses on go-ipfs and js-ipfs, you are welcome to join both of the efforts :)

As I mentioned during last Monday call, a good place to start is to read through these fresh perspectives on learning IPFS - ipfs/specs#145

Then to pick issues that are good to start with, go to the waffle board and pick one with 'help wanted' from the 'ready' column, those issues are ready for new contributors to tackle. Let me know if you need any help :)
