Unrefereed research candidate. An exact projected-angle likelihood and population inversion for wide-binary eccentricities.

  • Closed-form likelihood of the angle between a wide binary's projected separation and projected relative velocity, for any eccentricity (Theorem 3.1).
  • The angle distribution determines the eccentricity distribution, atoms included, by an explicit Abel inverse (Theorem 4.1), answering the uniqueness question in Appendix B of Hwang, Ting and Zakamska (2022). The inverse is weakly continuous but discontinuous in total variation.
  • Direct moment estimators, e.g. E e^2 = 1/2 + E cos 2Γ − (1/2) E cos 4Γ; power-law index estimators; two exact selection results.
  • Ideal model; synthetic checks only; no observational catalogue analysed.
