For everyone updating from 4.3.24: a preset made for another instrument now switches the instrument when the CR30 is chosen, the website describes what ChromIQ does today, and the scanner and camera window says when it has changed the usage scenario for you. Most of this release is for the Konica Minolta FD-9 beta: tidier layout settings that look like every other instrument's, a check that the FD-9 can read every page, choices when a sheet seems turned round or is another page, the patch set editor for FD-9 charts, an optional clip border, and charts that can be shown turned on screen. Your charts, measurements and profiles do not change.
For everyone updating from 4.3.24: if you use the Konica Minolta FD-9 beta, Create Chart and the Measure tab now look and behave much more like they do for every other instrument, the FD-9 asks what to do when a sheet seems to be turned round or another page, and ChromIQ checks every FD-9 page before it saves a chart. A ColorMunki or other preset loaded while the CR30 (or the FD-9) is chosen now switches the instrument, whether FD-9 support is on or off. With FD-9 support off, nothing changes for the FD-9. Your charts, measurements and profiles do not change.

New

  • FD-9 (beta): when a sheet seems to be turned round, or to be another page of the chart, ChromIQ now asks what to do instead of stopping. It works like the check for a strip read twice. The FD-9 waits while you choose: “Measure page N again” (the safe choice, and what closing the window does) sets the readings aside and asks for the page again; “Save it turned round” files every reading under the patch that was really under the FD-9's head; “It was page M: save it as page M” files the sheet as the page it really was, replacing that page's earlier readings, and then asks for the page that is still missing; “Keep it as read” (for another page: “Keep it as page N”) saves the readings as they are. A sheet is only refiled when all of its patches were measured in one go, so no reading can end up on the wrong patch. What happened to each page is noted in the measurement, and if you stop after a page was saved out of order, Resume still carries on. No new command is sent to the FD-9.
  • FD-9 (beta): ChromIQ checks every page before it saves a new FD-9 chart. The FD-9 finds a sheet only by its four small black squares, so ChromIQ now runs the search for them from lessbones's FD-9 driver (the same find_marks and grid_rows the measurement uses) on every page, the way the FD-9 will scan it, at two scan sizes. If something ChromIQ prints (the small page number or the new clip border) would get in the way, the chart is not made, and a window says which of them is in the way and what you can do about it. The check takes a fraction of a second per page.
  • FD-9 (beta): FD-9 charts can be shown turned on screen. An FD-9 chart is printed with its arrow at the top and its page number and clip border text turned round, so on screen those words were upside down. Preferences > Beta now has “Turn FD-9 charts on screen” under FD-9 support: Off (as before), 90°, 180° or 270°. At 180° the arrow points down and every word on the sheet reads the right way up, as when you hold the sheet to feed it. Only the picture in Create Chart and on the Measure tab turns: the margin guide lines, the live colours and the pointer stay on their own patches, “Measured from Preview” and the pointer's X and Y still describe the paper as printed, and the expected and measured halves of each patch stay where the label says. The chart files, the print and the measurement do not change, and every other chart is shown as before. The option is greyed while FD-9 support is off, and a change shows as soon as you press OK.
  • FD-9 (beta): an FD-9 clip border, off by default. Like the other instruments, an FD-9 chart can now carry ChromIQ's clip border, with the Notes box as its default content (patch count, paper, date, page and lines to write on) or any other content you choose. It sits in the free space after the last row of patches, about 14 mm deep, and is turned round so that it reads the right way up when you hold the sheet by that end to feed it. Switch it on with “Clip border” in Manual. It stays off by default until lessbones has tested it on real sheets in his FD-9.

Changed

  • FD-9 (beta): the long FD-9 note at the top of Manual's layout settings is gone. No other instrument has one. Where the FD-9's own controls are (patch size and the two gaps, under “Expert Options”, in “Patches & spacers”) is now said in the tooltip of every greyed control and in the Instrument (i).
  • FD-9 (beta): every layout control the FD-9 does not use is now greyed, the text boxes too. The strip and patch label patterns and the sheet text could still be typed into and did nothing; they are now greyed, the pattern boxes show the patterns an FD-9 chart really uses, and a pattern typed for another instrument no longer holds “Generate Chart” off for the FD-9. Everything comes back when you choose another instrument.
  • FD-9 (beta): the page number reads the same way as the clip border. On a chart of several sheets, the small page number (“1/3”) stays at the top left and is now turned round like the clip border text, so both read the right way up from the end you hold. It is now printed in the same typeface as the clip border.
  • FD-9 (beta): the Measure tab looks like it does for other instruments. The FD-9's options are now a “Measurement Options” group under the step heading, with the measurement condition as an ordinary row. The chartread options, which do not apply to the FD-9, are hidden rather than greyed, so there is only one “Resume” on screen. The preview is titled with the chart's name instead of a cache file name.
  • The website describes what ChromIQ does today. The page at itsab1989.github.io/ChromIQ no longer says what was new in which version; it states what ChromIQ does, and links to this changelog once for the history. It now also describes the Konica Minolta FD-9 (beta) and ChromIQ's own profile engine (beta), printing on Windows without the driver, the red, yellow and green outlines while you measure, verifications judged against what your profile predicts, the macOS version ChromIQ needs and the Windows builds it comes in. Thanks to Knut for asking for this.
  • Build profile with scanner or camera: the window now says when it has changed the usage scenario for you. If “A profile for my printer, measured with this scanner” was selected and you choose “A standard target I own”, ChromIQ has to move you to another scenario, because a printer profile cannot be made from a bought target. The note under the choices used to explain only why the printer scenario is greyed, so the change was easy to miss. It now says first that ChromIQ changed the scenario, from which one to which one, and why, and that to make a printer profile you choose “A chart I made in ChromIQ” and then the printer scenario again. When no scenario was changed, the note reads as before. Thanks to Knut for pointing this out.

Fixed

  • FD-9 (beta): the patch set editor opens FD-9 charts. It used to refuse them, saying it could not lay them out yet, but that was not true: the edited patch set goes back to Create Chart, which lays it out the FD-9's way. Thanks to Knut for finding this.
  • A preset made for another instrument now switches the instrument when the FD-9 or the CR30 is chosen. Loading, for example, “★ ColorMunki · A4-2142p-7pages-…” in Manual while the FD-9 was chosen made an FD-9 chart with the preset's seven pages and showed helper-marker dashes in the preview. It now switches to the ColorMunki, as it always did from the i1Pro. An FD-9 chart never shows helper markers, and its greyed “Pages” box shows the chart's own page count. Thanks to Knut for the careful steps that showed it.
  • FD-9 (beta): the warning about the edge a printer cannot print is right for FD-9 charts. It called the FD-9's small black squares “printed text” and suggested a setting the FD-9 does not use. It now says plainly that the FD-9 could not find the sheet if those squares were cut off, and suggests what works: another printer that prints closer to the edge, a larger sheet cut to size, or the printer's borderless setting if it prints at exactly 100 % (many enlarge the page a little, which would move the patches). If only the small page number or part of the FD-9 clip border would be cut off, it says so in its own words: the FD-9 does not need either of them, so the chart can be printed like that, and a printer that prints closer to the edge keeps them whole (the clip border can also be switched off).

Installation (Linux, beta): Download the tarball for your architecture (x86_64 for most desktops/laptops, aarch64 for ARM systems like Raspberry Pi 4/5). Extract with tar xzf ChromIQ-Linux-*.tar.gz, then run ./ChromIQ/ChromIQ. Requires ArgyllCMS — install via your package manager (sudo apt install argyll) or from argyllcms.com/downloadlinux.html.

☕ ChromIQ is free and always will be — if it saves you time or ink, a coffee is a kind way to say thanks. Completely optional, and the app stays fully featured either way.
