Release v1.0.0 - local-backup
September 7, 2025
This release introduces a major new feature to the collection: local-backup, a powerful and efficient script for creating automated, snapshot-style system backups.
✨ New Script: local-backup
Introducing local-backup.sh, a new system script designed for creating and managing automated, incremental system backups. This tool is perfect for setting up a regular, reliable backup strategy on any server or local machine with minimal configuration.
Highlights
-
Space-Efficient Snapshots: The script leverages
rsyncwith hard links (--link-dest) to create daily backups that function as complete, independent snapshots. This approach drastically reduces disk space usage by only storing new or changed files once. -
Automated Pruning: Keep your backup destination tidy without manual intervention. The script automatically deletes the oldest backups based on a configurable retention policy, ensuring your storage drive doesn't fill up unexpectedly.
-
Configuration-Driven: All settings are managed through a simple and well-documented configuration file,
local-backup.conf. Define your source directory, backup destination, file exclusions, and retention policy in one central place. -
Designed for Automation:
local-backupis built to be run non-interactively by a system scheduler likecron. It operates silently, logs its activity to a file, and only surfaces notifications if an error occurs.
Getting Started
-
A default configuration file has been added at
/conf/local-backup.conf. You will need to copy this to/etc/local-backup.conf(or another supported location) and customize it for your system. -
For detailed setup and configuration instructions, please refer to the updated
system/README.md.
This new script will be a valuable addition for anyone looking to implement a simple yet robust local backup solution.
