To update, copy the new platform-shooter folder over the old one in PSP/GAME/ and replace the files: your settings (config.txt) and your packs in resourcepacks/ stay. The sample packs of 0.5.0 (the mountain and the caves) stay too if you had them: you can delete them.

English

New:

  • The game's look is now pixel art: a new player (standing and
shooting), a new walking enemy, spinning wheel, flag, bullet, menu
button, level 1 background and a black menu background. The game draws
its own pictures with sharp pixels. The player is shown pixel by pixel,
exactly as drawn, and when it shoots only its arm changes. The bullet
is drawn twice as big (each of its pixels 2x2), with the same shape; it
    collides as before.
  • The player collides with the new drawing: it is about 1 square wide
(it was 2) and a bit taller, and its bullets come out of its gun,
about 1.9 squares high (it was 1.3). An enemy of the packs that must be shot from the
ground needs size = 1.8 or more. A pack made before 0.6.0 with its own
player keeps the old collision box and gun, so it plays the same.
  • Materials for the solid blocks. A material is one picture with 15
pieces (edges, corners, platform ends, inner corners), and the game
puts the right piece on each square by looking at the squares around
it. The game brings grass, and the ground of its levels is now grass. A pack
can bring its own in blocks/<name>/, use them in its maps with the
numbers 1 to 9, or make one the material of a whole level with
    blocks = <name>. MODDING.txt explains it.
  • Switches, colour blocks, keys and doors, coins and extra lives, drawn
    in the maps with ! % ~ & | * +. A switch turns its colour on: the
blocks of that colour appear (%) or disappear (~). It is used with
△ (or touched, or shot, if the level says so) and goes on and off each
time (or stays on, or stays on for a few seconds, if the level says so); the exit can
wait for one (exit_switch). A key opens a door of its colour, with △. There are 4 colours
(red, blue, green and yellow), given with colors: under the map. The
coins are counted at the top left of the screen; an extra life saves
the player once (not from a fall). MODDING.txt explains it.
  • A health bar for the bosses: an enemy with health_bar = yes shows
its name and the life it has left at the bottom of the screen once the
    player comes near it.
  • CREDITS, small in the bottom right corner of the title screen: the
credits come up the screen (✕ makes
them faster, ○ goes back). They also come after the last level,
before the game starts again. The pixel art is by Nebura Noctis, the
port is made with Claude (Opus 5.5).
  • The coins and extra lives go on from a level to the next one (dying
starts the level with what you had when you came in), and the pause
no longer clears the level's switches, keys and coins.
  • Two new sample packs, made with AI: 0.6.0: The temple (switches,
colour blocks, keys and doors) and 0.6.0: The fortress (coins, extra
lives and health bars). Each one with 3 levels, its enemies, a
character, a material and its music, and texts in the 7 languages.
    They replace those of 0.5.0.
  • Five more languages, those of the PSP with Latin letters: French,
German, Italian, Dutch and Portuguese (translated with Claude). The
texts of the levels and the sample packs too.
  • The game starts in the console's or the emulator's language (if it has
it), until you choose one in OPTIONS > LANGUAGE. The log says which one
    the console has.
  • Music. A pack can bring it in sounds/music/, as OGG Vorbis files:
menu.ogg plays in the menus and game.ogg in the levels, and a level
can have its own (music = forest.ogg in its file). It is read little
by little from the Memory Stick, starts again at the end, stops in the
pause and goes on where it was. Its volume is OPTIONS > MUSIC. The game
itself still has no music, like the original. MODDING.txt explains it.
  • The loading screen moves: the dots of "Loading..." come and go, and at
the bottom your numbers take turns: the times you died or jumped, the
bullets you fired, the enemies you defeated, the levels you completed
or the time you played. The game counts them in
stats.txt, next to config.txt, and saves them when a level ends,
when you go back to the menu and when the game closes.
  • TEXTURE PACKS warns about music that isn't OGG Vorbis and about a level
whose music isn't in the pack.
  • The log says which music plays, from which pack, and when a mix found
    no music ready (a gap).
  • The log starts before the loading screen and says how it went, writes
the texts on the screen each time they change (and if one doesn't fit),
and says when the game before didn't close well (switched off, hung or
crashed), with the last line of its log.
  • The log says which custom firmware runs (ARK-4 or ARK-5, with its
    version).

Optimizations:

  • Faster loading: the game's backgrounds come at the PSP's size, and
the packs' backgrounds are resized much faster (in the emulator,
    starting goes from 2.3 s to 0.7 s).

Fixed bugs:

  • The log could write a PSP-3000 as a PSP-1000: it now says the model as
    the custom firmware tells it.

Novedades:

English

New:

  • The menus draw their own buttons: one picture,
gui/sprites/widget/button.png, for every button of the game,
stretched to each one (in 9 parts, like the dialog box), with its word
written on it; and the pause's gear, gui/sprites/icon/gear.png. A
pack can also bring button_highlighted.png for the chosen button.
All the menus share one background, gui/menu_background.png, now
only the background (a pack can still bring one for a single menu,
like gui/title/background.png). A pack can change them all. Packs of
before, with the buttons painted on their menus, look as they did.
  • The pictures of a pack go in folders: entity/ (the player, the enemies, the bullets),
block/, environment/ (the level backgrounds), gui/ (the menus)
and font/ (the button symbols); the title screen phrases go in
texts/splashes.txt. The names of before keep working, so every pack
made until now works as it is (MODDING.txt has both lists).
  • The options have a volume for the sounds and one for the music (for
when there is music), in place of the sound on and off buttons:
    left and right change them.
  • A CONTROLS screen in the options: jumping, shooting, talking and
pausing can each go on ✕ ○ □ △ L R or START (if another action had
that button, they swap), and "The buttons of always" puts them back.
The menus are always ✕ and ○. Moving with the analog stick is an
option there, off at first (before, it was always on).
  • The texts that show a button (the tutorials, the conversations, the
sign to talk) show the one chosen. In the texts of a pack, {JUMP},
    {SHOOT}, {TALK} and {PAUSE} are those buttons (MODDING.txt).
  • In the pause, ○ goes back to the game (before, it went to the title
    screen, like MENU).
  • RESTART in the pause asks first ("Restart the level?", ✕ yes, ○ no),
so the level isn't lost by pressing it by mistake.
  • The main menu shows the game's version in the bottom left corner.
  • The log is now data/cache/log.txt (in the game's folder), and a
log changed after the game wrote it is noticed. Send that file with
    your bug reports, as before.
  • The log says more:
    • each bullet that hits the player or an enemy, and where;
    • how many bullets hit the walls or left the level each second;
    • the close calls (a bullet or an enemy that passes very near the
      player without touching it) and how many there were in each level;
    • how each enemy was defeated (a shot, or a jump on it) and where;
    • where the player stands still for 10 seconds, and where they are
      when the game says there is no progress;
    • where the player is when pausing;
    • each frame drawn into the picture that was on the screen, or a
      picture that came late (a flicker on the screen);
    • the step of the game of each key: with it, a game can be played
      again exactly from its log, to see how a bug happened;
    • the sounds: where each one comes from (the game or a pack), why
each hit sound played and where, which ones played each second and
how loud, and if something went wrong
(a sound with nothing to play, one cut off because 8 were playing,
      a mix that came late and left a gap, or a mix too loud);
    • how long the TEXTURE PACKS screen took to check the packs;
    • each change of the volumes and of the controls.
  • The log never grows past 1 MB: when it gets there it starts again
with its first lines (the version, the PSP...), so it can't fill the
    Memory Stick.

Optimizations:

  • The menus use one picture for their background instead of five: about
2 MB less memory in use (on a PSP-1000 the game has 19 MB).
  • The texts of the menus are drawn about 30 times faster. On a PSP-1000
the TEXTURE PACKS screen went at 10 to 30 FPS; now it goes at 60, and
at about 30 during the first seconds, while it checks the packs.
  • Leaving TEXTURE PACKS after changing packs only loads again the
pictures that changed, and the game no longer looks for every picture
in every pack one by one. On a PSP-1000 it took 5.5 to 10 s; now, turning
off a pack that changes almost every picture takes about 4.5 s, and
    less when fewer pictures change.

Fixed bugs:

  • The enemies' bullets went through the walls and the floor: now they
stop when they hit them, like the player's.
  • In the big levels the view went down at the edge of a gap you can jump
over, or of a step down of 3 squares, as if it were a drop. Now it
only looks down when there is nowhere to jump to ahead.
  • In the big levels the player's bullets went on off the screen and
killed enemies that couldn't be seen, and the enemies shot from just
outside the screen. Now the player's bullets are gone when they leave
the screen, and an enemy only shoots when it is on the screen.
  • With 8 sounds playing at once, a new one cut off the one that had
played longest instead of the one closest to its end.
  • Touching an enemy, the hit sound and the death were checked apart, a
pixel off: with an enemy just touching on the left the sound played
and nothing happened, and on the right the player died without the
sound. Now they always come together.
  • A bullet that hits the player had no sound: now it has the hit sound.

Novedades:

gui/sprites/icon/gear.png.
gui/title/background.png).
    niveles), gui/ (los menús) y font/ (los símbolos de los botones);
    • cada bala que le da al jugador o a un enemigo, y dónde;
    • cuántas balas chocan con las paredes o salen del nivel cada segundo;
    • los "por los pelos" (una bala o un enemigo que pasa muy cerca del
      jugador sin tocarlo) y cuántos hubo en cada nivel;
    • cómo se mató a cada enemigo (de un disparo o saltándole encima) y
      dónde;
    • dónde se queda quieto el jugador 10 segundos, y dónde está cuando el
      juego dice que no avanza;
    • dónde está el jugador al poner la pausa;
    • cada imagen que se dibujó sobre la que se estaba viendo, o que llegó
      tarde (un parpadeo en la pantalla);
    • el paso del juego de cada botón: con él, una partida se puede
      fallo;
    • los sonidos: de dónde sale cada uno (del juego o de un paquete), por
      que llegó tarde y dejó un hueco, o una mezcla demasiado fuerte);
    • cuánto tardó la pantalla de PAQUETES DE TEXTURAS en comprobar los
      paquetes;
    • cada cambio de los volúmenes y de los controles.

English

New:

  • Big levels: a pack's level drawn as a map can be up to 100 squares wide
and 60 tall (before, one screen: 20x15). The view is the same as always
and follows the player: a bit ahead of where it looks,
and up or down when it lands at another height. At the edge of a drop
it looks down, so you see where you would land before jumping, and it
goes on down with you while you fall.
  • In the big levels the background moves slower than the level
    (parallax).
  • Up to 1000 objects per level (before, 200). What is outside the view
isn't drawn, so long levels don't slow the game down.
  • Every text of a pack goes in its folder texts/, one file per language
(texts/en.txt, texts/es.txt...): first the texts of the levels
(WELCOME = Welcome!, shown with text = @WELCOME), then the NPCs'
conversations. So a pack's level texts can be translated. The
dialog_en.txt files of 0.4.0 still work.
  • The texts of the original levels are now in
    resourcepacks/original/texts/, like a pack's.
  • △ on the TEXTURE PACKS screen also checks the texts/ files and warns
    about a level's @KEY that isn't in them.
  • What a pack can use now depends on the version of the game it was
made with (game_version in its pack.txt): a pack made with a newer
version than the game shows up as INCOMPATIBLE and can't be turned on,
and the packs screen says when it uses things of a newer version than
the one it says (big levels and texts/ need 0.5.0). The packs of
before, with format = 1 to 3, still work. MODDING.txt explains it.
  • A log of everything, automatic: from the moment the game starts it
writes log.txt, next to EBOOT.PBP, without doing anything. If
something goes wrong, send that file with your bug report. It has the
date and time, the version, the language and the packs, and on what the
game runs (the PPSSPP emulator, or the PSP model: 1000, 2000/3000/E1000
or Go); once a second the frames, the slowest one and its parts (logic,
drawing, GPU, waiting for the screen), the frames that missed the screen
    and the GPU commands; the system (clock, battery, memory, firmware);
every key pressed and released; each level played (the file it comes
from, its size, every death with what killed the player and where, the
shots, whether it was completed and in how long, and a warning after 30
seconds without getting any further); the menu buttons, the pause, the
language, the packs turned on or off, the conversations and their
answers, and the enemies defeated. Each game starts a new log.txt (in
the save data folder, PSP/SAVEDATA/PLATFORMSHOOTER, if the game's
folder can't be written); it is written every 20 seconds by a thread of
its own, so the game never waits for the Memory Stick.
  • Two new sample packs made with AI, off at first: 0.5.0: The mountain
(a valley 100 squares wide, a cliff 60 tall and a big summit: the camera
and the parallax) and 0.5.0: The caves (a deep well, a mine full of
objects with a miner to talk to, and a hall with two golems that shoot,
to jump over or shoot down; every text in texts/). They replace the
0.4.0 ones (the village and the monsters): from now on each version
comes with its own sample packs.
  • In the big levels, the shooting enemies only shoot when they are near
    the view.
  • Simpler collisions: everything collides with the rectangle of its
drawing (before, the player and the bullets used the exact shape of
their pictures, and the wheel turned its own). The player always rests
on its feet, and what touches what is easier to see. MODDING.txt has
the rectangle of each picture, to draw the packs' characters filling
it; the sample packs are drawn that way.

Optimizations:

  • Collisions with the walls are much faster: the game only looks at the
walls near each object, and remembers the size of the ones that don't
move. A level full of enemies needs about 30 times less work, and the
original levels about 3 times less.
  • The backgrounds are drawn in narrow strips, as the PSP draws fastest:
a frame takes much less time in every level and menu.
  • The packs' texts are read with the levels, and their letters are made
then too: a conversation no longer stops the game for a moment, to read
the Memory Stick or to draw a letter it hadn't used yet.
  • Three screen buffers: the game draws into one while the display shows
another and the third waits, and the display itself changes them at
the vertical blank. Before, the next frame could start being drawn
while it was still on the screen, and part of the screen flickered.

Fixed bugs:

  • On some emulators (PPSSPP on Android) LANGUAGE didn't change the
language: the game couldn't list the languages/ folder. Now it also
looks for its languages by their names (issue #4).

    las órdenes de la GPU; el sistema (reloj, batería, memoria, firmware);

New:

  • NPCs in the packs: characters the player can talk to, made like the
packs' enemies (npcs/<name>/npc.txt and a picture) and placed with
their letter in the maps. They are harmless. The player talks to them
with Triangle (a △ appears over them), or they talk when touched (for
signs). The ones that stand still look at the player.
  • Dialogs: what the NPCs say goes in one file per language
(dialog_en.txt, dialog_es.txt...), with conversations of several
lines, the name of who speaks, and answers to choose that lead to other
parts. A pack can change the dialog box with textures/dialog.png.
MODDING.txt explains it with examples. Format 3.
  • Two sample packs come with the game, off at first: Sample: The village
(characters and dialogs, 3 levels) and Sample: Monster gallery (9 new
enemies and a boss, 4 levels). Each one changes every picture and sound
of the game and is played with its own levels. They are made with AI,
only to show what packs can do: they are not part of the original game.
  • own_levels = yes in a pack's pack.txt: only the packs' levels are
    played, not the game's.
  • MODDING.txt explains how to make the animations of the enemies and
NPCs, and how big a pack's enemy must be for the player's bullets to
hit it (1.5 squares on the ground).
  • Up to 24 enemies and NPCs among the active packs (before, 16 enemies).
  • △ on the TEXTURE PACKS screen also checks the NPCs and the dialog
files: a folder without npc.txt, a missing conversation, a line it
doesn't understand, an answer to a section that isn't there, an NPC
    with an enemy's name, and own_levels without a level1.txt.
  • Options for the objects of a level: a flag can hide until the shooting
enemies are defeated (hide), and a shooting enemy (or a pack's enemy
that shoots) can be told not to shoot (no_shoot). They go after the
    object's numbers, e.g. flag 529 209 2 2 hide. Packs that use them say
    format = 3.
  • By default a flag no longer hides: in the packs' levels with shooting,
the flag is there from the start unless it has hide. The original
level 6 keeps its flag hidden until both shooting enemies are defeated,
as always, and so do the packs made for 0.3.0 (format 1 or 2).
  • A pack's enemy that shoots around can say how many bullets each shot
has: bullets = 12 (2 to 16, evenly spread; 8 without it, as before).
    Format 3.
  • A pack can say what it is in its pack.txt: type = mod makes it a
mod, which can only be turned on or off from the main menu (not from
the pause), even if it only has pictures. type = textures, or no
    line, works as before.

Fixed bugs:

  • A pack's level named with a 0 in front (level07.txt) was shown as
fine on the TEXTURE PACKS screen, but the game never loaded it. Now △
says it must be called level7.txt.

Español

Novedades:

Ejemplo: El pueblo (personajes y diálogos, 3 niveles) y Ejemplo:
ejemplo flag 529 209 2 2 hide. Los paquetes que las usan dicen
    format = 3.

English

New:

  • Levels drawn as a map: in a pack's level file, after a map: line, the
level is drawn with letters, one per square (20 x 15): # walls, P
    player, F flag, E enemy, S shooting enemy, W wheel, . empty.
No more coordinates; the old way still works, even in the same file.
MODDING.txt explains it with an example, and △ warns about unknown
letters and maps that are too big.
  • Ground, platforms and walls: four pictures instead of one, and in
tiles (repeated square by square, no longer stretched). The game tells
them apart: the lowest layer of the level is the ground (floor.png,
with floor_top.png on its top row, like grass over dirt), the
floating blocks are platforms (platform.png) and the blocks taller
than wide are walls (wall.png). A pack without the new pictures uses
its wall.png, as before. Each one is one square (HD: 48x37). For now
the four are the original wall picture; packs can draw them different.
  • New enemies in packs, built from pieces: enemies/<name>/enemy.txt and
its picture (with animation frames). Ways to move (still, walk, patrol,
fly, follow, jump, charge, drop), to shoot (forward, at the player,
around), life, damage, size, stomp, splitting into others when it dies,
keeping the exit closed, and up to 3 phases that change all that (for
bosses). Each one has a letter for the maps. △ warns about every
mistake with its line, and says how many enemies a pack has.
  • The original pack is now only the template to copy: it can't be
turned on (it has the game's own files).
  • From the pause menu, packs that change how the game plays (levels,
enemies or rules) can't be changed, only from the main menu; packs that
only change pictures, sounds or phrases still can. Levels and rules
left as in the template don't count as changes.
  • Pack format 2: a pack with enemies or levels drawn as a map says
format = 2 in its pack.txt (△ reminds it), so older versions of the
game don't load it wrong. MODDING.txt explains everything new, with
examples and tips to design levels.
  • In the menus, holding Up or Down keeps moving, like in the PSP menu
(after a moment, one step every 0.1 seconds).

Optimizations:

  • The checks of the TEXTURE PACKS screen are about 10 times faster on a
PSP-1000: with 5 packs, under 5 seconds (it was about 48).
  • Nothing off the screen is drawn.
  • The game sorts the ground, platforms and walls of a level once, not in
    every frame.

Fixed bugs:

  • On a busy TEXTURE PACKS screen (a slow PSP, big packs) the checks of
the packs could stay on "Checking..." for ever.

Español

Novedades:

    casilla (20 x 15): # paredes, P jugador, F bandera, E enemigo,

English

  • Pack info: pack.txt can say the author of the pack (author), its
version (version, raise it with each update) and the version of the
game it was made with (game_version). OPTIONS > TEXTURE PACKS shows
the version next to the name, and △ shows all three.
  • Splashes like Minecraft's: the title screen phrases are now the same in
every language, in splashes.txt of the original pack (one phrase per
line). A pack can change them with its own splashes.txt; △ shows how
many phrases it has. The language files no longer have phrases.
  • Faster TEXTURE PACKS screen: it shows at once and checks the packs in
the background ("Checking..." until each one is done), opening each
file once at most (half the files of before), and it remembers the
checks until the game is restarted. Before, it could take about 13
    seconds on a PSP-3000 with 3 packs.
  • Up to 8 packs can be on at once; turning on one more says so.
  • Up to 16 packs are listed (it was 32). With more, the game keeps the
active ones and original, then the rest by name, and says how many
are left out (before, which ones were left out was random).
  • Tested on a PSP-1000.

For pack makers: see MODDING.txt for author, version, game_version and splashes.txt.

English

First public version of the native PSP port of platform-shooter, by
jmgamer1199.

  • The 5 levels of the original game, with the same physics and collisions.
  • 60 FPS: the game runs 30 steps per second like the original and draws a
    smooth frame between each two.
  • New level 6: two enemies that shoot. From this level on, R shoots.
  • Pause menu with a gear button for the options.
  • English and Spanish; languages are text files (languages/), and the
    title screen phrases (splash) too.
  • Resource packs (resourcepacks/): pictures (PNG, HD up to twice the
screen size) and sounds (WAV). Several at once, with priorities. Shared
format for all future ports (format = 1), with optional per-console
    folders (textures_psp/, sounds_psp/, levels_psp/).
  • Language and packs are saved in config.txt.
  • Pack warnings: a pack with files the game can't use shows WARNINGS, and
Triangle lists each file with what is wrong in it.
  • PSP button symbols (△ ○ □ ✕) in the texts, with their own pictures
    (button_*.png, provisional ones for now).
  • Levels in packs: levels/levelN.txt text files replace levels or add
new ones after the 6th, with their own background, texts and shooting.
The template pack has the 6 original levels in this format.
  • Rules in packs: rules.txt changes the life, jump, gravity, speeds,
enemy life and fire rate, within safe limits. The packs list marks the
    packs that change the rules.
  • MODDING.txt: the guide to make packs, levels, rules, languages and
    fonts.
  • Debug mode with Select: FPS, frame time, memory, room, player data and
    collision boxes.
  • The version is shown in the PSP menu (in the title and in Information).
  • Works on PSP-1000, PSP-2000 and PSP-3000 with custom firmware (tested
on a PSP-1000 and a PSP-3000), and on PPSSPP (CPU at 333 MHz, about
13 MB of memory at most with a large pack).
  • Licensed under CC BY-NC 4.0.

Known: the icon and background in the PSP menu and the button symbols are
provisional.
