Opensidian 0.8.1

Canvas grows up, unsaved text is safe when you close or quit, nine reported bugs are fixed, and two bundled libraries get security fixes. Built from 8036084, tested on Fedora 44, Debian 13 and Ubuntu 26.04 (slim AppImage, portable AppImage, Flatpak, RPM, DEB and a source build: 15 of 15 cells pass).

New: Canvas

Undo, redo, copy and paste

  • Undo with Ctrl/Cmd+Z, redo with Ctrl+Shift+Z or Ctrl+Y, or use the new undo/redo buttons in the canvas controls. One action is one step, so deleting several cards at once undoes in one go.
  • Ctrl/Cmd+C and Ctrl/Cmd+V copy the selected cards together with the edges between them. Pasted cards land at the pointer with new ids.
  • New commands: Canvas: Duplicate selection, Canvas: Undo and Canvas: Redo.

Cards show what they hold

  • Text cards render their Markdown (emphasis, lists, code, headings), and [[links]] inside them open the note in a new tab.
  • Image cards show the image. Audio and video cards play in place, with controls.
  • Any other file shows its name and extension, and a double-click opens it with your default app.
  • A note card narrowed to a heading shows only that section.
  • Ctrl/Cmd-click on a link card opens the URL in your browser.
  • Groups take a background image (cover, ratio or repeat) and can be renamed by double-clicking the label (Enter saves).
  • A card's content scrolls with the mouse wheel only once the card is selected, so the board pans freely.

Canvases are vault files

  • Create new canvas from the ribbon button or the command palette puts the canvas in the folder of the active file.
  • ![[Board.canvas]] in a note shows the board's cards and edges as shapes in reading view. Click the embed to open the canvas.
  • Notes placed on a canvas list the canvas in their backlinks.
  • Rename and Delete in the file explorer work on .canvas files. Delete moves them to .trash.

Fixed

Data safety

  • Unsaved text is no longer lost when you close the window (close button, Alt+F4 or the window manager), when the app gets SIGTERM, or when you close a tab and quit right after. Before, the last 250 ms of typing (up to 2 s during a burst) could be lost. The app now waits for every pending or in-flight note write before it exits, for up to 5 s. A second SIGTERM exits at once.

Tabs

  • Close all in a split pane removes that pane. The last pane stays, empty. (#8)
  • Dragging a tab to the bottom edge of a pane splits it downwards, with the same drop highlight as the side split. (#17)

Graph

  • A linked local graph lets go when the note it follows is closed. It stays open, centred on that note, instead of jumping to whichever tab takes focus, as in Obsidian. Closing a background tab keeps the link. (#13)
  • Touch: a two-finger pinch zooms around the gesture centre and a two-finger drag pans. Touchpad pinch zooms too. (#15)

Interface

  • Buttons in Settings, including Check for updates, show the pointer cursor instead of the text cursor. (#9)
  • Dragging bookmarks to reorder them no longer selects text or items. (#11)
  • The app is called Opensidian everywhere you see it: window title, desktop menu entry, Flatpak metadata and error messages. Package names, the binary and the app id stay lowercase. (#12)
  • The close button of the vault picker (start dialog) is the same button as in Settings. (#14)

Security

  • brotli 1.2.1 (CVE-2026-111497): the Flatpak bundles brotli 1.2.1, because the GNOME 49 runtime still ships 1.2.0. The portable AppImage carries 1.2.1 too; the release checks this on the exact file.
  • glib 0.18.5 (GHSA-wrw7-89jp-8q8g): the vendored glib carries the one upstream fix for the VariantStrIter undefined behaviour and nothing else. It is attributed in THIRD-PARTY.md.

Known issue

  • In reading view, coming back to a note after visiting another tab can occasionally land about a dozen lines away from where you were. 0.8.0 does the same. A fix is planned for the next release.
