Babbage is a notepad calculator for Linux. You write lines of plain language and numbers in a sheet and the answer
appears beside each line.

  • Calculating. Arithmetic that stays exact until it cannot be, with the ≈ mark when an answer is rounded.
Percentages in every common form, more than 200 units with exact conversions, money in many currencies, dates,
times, durations, workdays and time zones, roots, logarithms, trigonometry, statistics, loans and growth.
  • Sheets. Names for values, references to earlier lines, subtotals, tags and a running Total. Sheets are plain
.bbg text files in your own folder, with a trash you can recover from (Ctrl+Shift+T).
  • Answers. Each answer has a menu: decimal places, thousands separators, large-number notation, fixed money
digits and repeating decimals (0.(3)), kept with the line in the sheet.
  • Words that were not understood are underlined, and a word one letter from a unit shows what it may mean.
  • The command line. bbg 20% of 85 answers from a terminal, reads sheets from a file or a pipe, and prints
JSON. It is the same program as the window, so the answers always agree.
  • From anywhere. babbage --quick opens a small window for one calculation, or brings the open window forward
on Hyprland. babbage setup omarchy adds a key and a menu entry in files of its own, with backups, a check of
Hyprland's configuration (undone if the change causes an error) and --remove; it refuses a key that is already
bound. The installer adds a launcher entry and an icon.
  • Tab completion for bbg in bash, zsh and fish: options, decimal places and the names of your saved sheets.
The installer adds it for bash, and for fish when you use fish, and never replaces a file it did not write.
  • Light themes. Babbage follows an Omarchy theme light or dark, keeps text readable on whatever colors the theme
gives, and off Omarchy follows the system's light or dark setting (BABBAGE_APPEARANCE overrides it).
  • Install. One line installs the program under ~/.local, checking every file against its published SHA-256.
  • Updates. Babbage can look for a newer release once a week and says exactly what it asks; one setting or one
    environment variable turns it off.
  • A user guide of fourteen chapters with pictures from the app.

Install

curl -fsSL https://github.com/jrimmer/babbage/releases/latest/download/install.sh | bash

Or download the AppImage or the tarball below and check it against its .sha256 file.

The network

Babbage works offline. It can check for a new version: when it starts, at most once a week, it asks the release page (GitHub by default) for its list of releases. That request carries your IP address and nothing from your sheets or settings. Turn it off in Settings, Updates (or set BABBAGE_UPDATES=off) and Babbage never goes online. Details: docs/updates.md.
