Fixed
A database written by tqdb 0.8.3 or earlier now says so instead of reporting EOF (#110). 0.8.4 changed the dense Haar QR rotation matrix from f32 to bf16 in quantizer.bin, and nothing checked the format: opening an older store failed with RuntimeError: io error: unexpected end of file, which is indistinguishable from a truncated file. Downstream this was investigated as data corruption across twelve stores, none of which were damaged. quantizer.bin now carries a magic and a format version, and a file that cannot be decoded is reported as the format change it almost always is — naming the file, the release that changed it, and the fact that the database must be regenerated, while still allowing that a 0.8.4-or-later file failing to decode really is damaged. Note the affected set is wider than first reported: 0.8.3 defaulted to the dense quantizer at every dimension, so all pre-0.8.4 stores are affected, not only those below the d=1024 SRHT threshold.
Changed
A release whose changelog section has a Migration heading can no longer ship as a PATCH. That is what 0.8.4 did, which is why users met the break without reading release notes. scripts/ci/check_migration_bump.py runs in the release workflow and refuses the tag; run against this repository's own history it flags 0.8.4 and passes every other release.
