Switchboard 2.8.5

Type the way you already type. **bold**, *italics* and ||spoilers|| now
mean what they look like — and a handful of things that were quietly wrong
about how messages are drawn got fixed along the way.

Markdown, on both clients

  • **bold**, *italics*, ***both***, __underline__ and ~~struck~~ go
out as real IRC formatting, so your message is bold for everybody — in
irssi, in HexChat, in a bouncer's log — not just for other Switchboard
    users.
  • ||spoiler|| covers a run until it is clicked or tapped. IRC has no code
for this, so the bars travel as text and each client draws them; somewhere
that does not, they still read as a spoiler.
  • /me **waves** works. Commands used to be skipped entirely, which kept
/mode #x +b *!*@host safe and also meant emotes sent the asterisks. Only
the five commands that end in something you wrote — /me, /say, /msg,
/notice, /wallops — are formatted, and only the message part of them,
never the target. follows the same rule, so /me  works
    too.

Messages you are reading

  • The desktop was deleting characters out of what other people said. It
read markdown out of incoming text, which meant eating the punctuation
    around it: ban *!*@host was drawn as ban !@host, and 2 * 3 * 4 = 24
    as 2 3 4 = 24. A mask shown wrong is a ban placed wrong. Messages now
arrive exactly as they were sent.
  • Emotes on Android were plain text — no bold, no covered runs, and a
link in an emote could not be tapped. Same for notices, which is exactly
where services put links: a password reset, a web panel.
  • A line of code pasted into a channel — if (a || b || c) — is no longer
    mistaken for a spoiler.

Fixed since 2.8.4

  • "Restart and update" did nothing. The button appeared, you clicked it,
and the app carried on. Updating on Linux works now.
  • Replies look like replies, with the quoted line, the author's colour
and an elbow into the message, the way you would expect.
  • A long message that wrapped sat further apart than two short ones. Every
line in the conversation is evenly spaced now, on both clients.
  • The initial in a reply's avatar sat low in its circle on Android.
