Blockerflow for Mac 1.2.1
Important
macOS may say "Blockerflow is damaged and can't be opened"
The app is not damaged. Blockerflow for Mac is distributed without an Apple Developer licence, so it is not signed or notarized by Apple, and macOS blocks apps it cannot verify.
After you drag Blockerflow into Applications, open Terminal and run this one command:
xattr -cr /Applications/Blockerflow.app
Then open Blockerflow again. You only need to do this once per install. You can also try right click, then Open, then Open again.
Support: help me get an Apple Developer ID (€99 a year) to sign Blockerflow for macOS and iOS, so it opens without warnings. Donate via PayPal
What's new in 1.2.1
- Fixed: "Your connection is not private" (ERR_CERT_DATE_INVALID) on Google and other sites. Blockerflow kept using a site certificate after it expired, so after about a day without a restart Chrome refused the site. Certificates are now renewed before they run out.
- Your Friend confirms their email first. When you choose a Friend, they get an email with a six-digit code and share it with you only if they agree to be your partner. Without the code the address is not saved, so a mistyped, made-up or stranger's address can no longer end up as your partner. An existing Friend shows "Not confirmed"; open the partner window to send them a code.
- Never stuck with a Friend who doesn't get the email. The Friend dialog now has "Didn't get the email? Use 24-hour Time Delay instead", and if the address can't receive email at all it offers the Time Delay straight away.
- Clearer messages when an unlock email can't be sent (the server's own reason instead of "address isn't valid").
- The image check runs in a separate program. Block adult images now uses blockerflow-vision, a small helper inside the app (
Contents/Helpers). Its source code is public under the AGPL-3.0: https://github.com/khaleel-git/blockerflow-vision. Scores are identical to 1.1.2 and it uses the same CPU and battery. Nothing leaves your Mac.
Everything from 1.1.2 is included.
After updating: macOS ties Screen Recording to this exact build, so Block adult images will wait for permission again. In System Settings › Privacy & Security › Screen & System Audio Recording, select Blockerflow, remove it with −, add it again with +, then quit and reopen Blockerflow.
Not tested yet: the Friend code with a real friend on Mac (tested with a test server and on Android), Intel Macs.
Licence
The image check uses NudeNet 320n (https://github.com/notAI-tech/NudeNet), trained with Ultralytics YOLOv8, both AGPL-3.0, and ONNX Runtime (MIT). They run in the separate program blockerflow-vision, whose complete source is at https://github.com/khaleel-git/blockerflow-vision (AGPL-3.0). What's new in 1.1.2
- Block adult images no longer blocks ordinary photos as often. A photo the model was unsure about (swimwear, gym, leggings) could be blocked after a few seconds just by staying on screen, because each look added the same weak score again. Now a look must be reasonably sure to count at all. Pictures the model is sure of are still blocked at once, still pictures on the second look, and videos as before.
- Tested on 50 ordinary photos of people in swimwear, sportswear and evening wear, each opened on its own and inside a web page: 6 of the 100 views were blocked before, 3 now.
- Still known: the model can be confidently wrong, and those pictures are still blocked. For example, it can read a shirtless man's chest as a woman's.
- Block suggestive images (lingerie and swimwear) works as before.
Everything from 1.1.1 is included: Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and Snapchat are never decrypted, and Reels, Shorts and Spotlight are blocked from the browser's address bar.
After updating: macOS ties Screen Recording to this exact build, so Block adult images will wait for permission again. In System Settings › Privacy & Security › Screen & System Audio Recording, select Blockerflow, remove it with −, add it again with +, then quit and reopen Blockerflow.
Not tested yet: real explicit content with the new rule, Safari and Arc with the address-bar blocking, Intel Macs.

What's new in 1.1.1
- Instagram Messages work again. Opening messages or searching showed "Something went wrong". Blockerflow was decrypting Instagram and Facebook traffic even with every switch off, and Instagram throttled it. Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and Snapchat are no longer decrypted at all.
- Reels, Shorts and Spotlight are now blocked from the browser's address bar: Instagram Reels and Explore, Facebook Reels, YouTube Shorts and Snapchat Spotlight, each by its own switch. Works in Chrome, Brave, Edge, Vivaldi, Opera, Arc and Safari; macOS asks once per browser to let Blockerflow control it (Automation). Not covered: Firefox, and Instagram's search side panel (it does not change the address).
- Block adult images uses far less CPU. The model now runs on the Mac's graphics chip / Neural Engine, a screen that has not changed is not checked again, and it looks every 2 seconds (was 1.5).
- The Block adult images switch now stays on while Screen Recording is not allowed yet, says so, and has a link to the right Settings page.
After updating: macOS ties Screen Recording to this exact build, so Block adult images will wait for permission again. In System Settings › Privacy & Security › Screen & System Audio Recording, select Blockerflow, remove it with −, add it again with +, then quit and reopen Blockerflow.
Not tested yet: Safari and Arc with the new address-bar blocking, Snapchat Spotlight in a real browser, Intel Macs.

What's new in 1.1.0
- Block adult images (new, on by default). Checks the screen for pictures and video the web filter cannot judge, such as a video in WhatsApp or a picture in Photos. While a browser, messenger, Photos, Preview or a video player is in front, it takes a screenshot about every 1.5 seconds and a model on your Mac checks it. Nothing is saved or sent. When something explicit is found it closes the tab (Chrome, Brave, Edge, Vivaldi, Opera, Arc, Safari) or hides the app, and shows the block screen.
- Block suggestive images (lingerie and swimwear; beach and gym photos get blocked too).
- Needs macOS 14 or newer and the Screen Recording permission (macOS asks at the first start). After allowing it, quit and reopen Blockerflow.
- Turning either switch off needs your accountability partner, like Adult Content.
- Black-and-white pictures are no longer skipped as if they were blank pages.
- The oldest supported macOS is now 12.3. The download grew from 25 MB to 69 MB because it now carries the image model and the ONNX Runtime library.
How well it works: on one Mac (Apple silicon, Chrome) it blocked adult pictures from a search and left ordinary pictures alone, but one ordinary-looking search was blocked in an earlier test, so expect some false alarms and some misses. Keep the web filter on too. Not tested yet: closing the tab in each browser (the app hides the browser if it cannot close the tab) and Intel Macs.

What is new in 1.0.3
- Far more web proxies are blocked. 1.0.2 knew 31 web proxy sites and missed others, such as ProxyPal. 1.0.3 knows about 110,000, using the UT1 "redirector" list (Université Toulouse Capitole, CC BY-SA 4.0) on top of my own.
- Consumer VPN websites are part of that list and are blocked too. Tailscale and OpenVPN are not.
- As before this follows the Block adult content switch, and your whitelist still wins. If a site you need is blocked by mistake, add it to your whitelist and tell me at hello@khaleel.eu.
Known limit: a proxy that is not in the list yet can still get through. If you find one, add it to your blocklist and tell me.
What came in 1.0.2
- Web proxy sites are blocked, so an adult site can no longer be opened through one.
- Links that hide the real site in encoded form (for example
?__pot=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cu...) are judged by the site they point to. - Secure connections to a bare public IP address are read with the Blockerflow CA certificate so the full address can be judged. An IP address whose certificate your Mac does not trust is passed through untouched.
If you installed an earlier version, turn off Uninstall Protection in Settings first, then drag the new app over the old one.
What is in it
- System wide filtering through a local proxy, with the same shared blocklists as Android.
- Blocks adult content, web proxies, piracy sites, Instagram and Facebook Reels, YouTube Shorts and Snapchat Spotlight, and closes blocked apps.
- Accountability partners: Myself, Time Delay, Friend and AI Coach.
- Focus Mode, a blocklist and whitelist of your own, and Uninstall Protection.
- Google sign in to sync your settings with the Android app.
- Tested with Safari, Chrome, Firefox, Opera, Vivaldi, DuckDuckGo, Brave, Microsoft Edge, Orion and Yandex.

What is new in 1.0.2
In 1.0.1 an adult site opened through a web proxy was not blocked, because the browser only ever talked to the proxy. This release closes that. All three changes follow the Block adult content switch, and your whitelist still wins.
- Web proxy sites are blocked. ProxyOrb, Steganos Online Web Proxy, CroxyProxy, ProxySite, KProxy and other "type an address, we open it for you" sites. Only the proxy address is blocked: steganos.com itself still opens.
- Links that hide the real site are read. Proxy mirrors carry the real site inside the link in encoded form (for example
?__pot=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cu...). The link is now judged by the site it points to. - Sites on a bare IP address are checked. A proxy mirror at an address like
https://104.223.85.164has no name to match. Secure connections to a public IP address are now read with the Blockerflow CA certificate so the full address can be judged. An IP address whose certificate your Mac does not trust is passed through untouched, as before.
Known limit: the web proxy list is a starting list of 31 addresses. New proxies appear all the time. If you find one that gets through, add it to your blocklist and tell me at hello@khaleel.eu.
If you installed an earlier version, turn off Uninstall Protection in Settings first, then drag the new app over the old one.

What is new in 1.0.1
- The status card now tells the truth. In 1.0.0 it said "Protection active" even when the filter was not running. It now checks every few seconds and shows "Protection is off" with a Turn on button when nothing is being filtered.
- Turn on starts the filter and keeps it starting with the app. In 1.0.0 a copy with auto start off could never filter, and nothing in the app could fix that.
- A cancelled administrator prompt for the hosts file no longer stops the filter from starting, and the prompt no longer appears when there is nothing to change.
- Uninstall Protection now locks every file in the app, not just the folder.
If you installed 1.0.0, turn off Uninstall Protection in Settings first, then drag the new app over the old one.
