Linux preview 4
Pre-release
Pre-release
Linux preview 4 fixes a few Linux settings bugs found in review of preview 3. Everything else is as in preview 3, which brought the Linux branch up to Scrawl 0.3.13. This is an early Linux build for Ubuntu 24.04 or newer, not part of the stable release. Filenames and --version say 0.3.13.
Download and run
Choose x86_64 for Intel/AMD or aarch64 for ARM64. For Intel/AMD:
chmod +x Scrawl-0.3.13-linux-x86_64.AppImage
./Scrawl-0.3.13-linux-x86_64.AppImage --appimage-extract-and-run appVerify with sha256sum --check --ignore-missing SHA256SUMS. Desktop setup (the input group on Wayland, portals) and per-desktop limits are in the first preview's instructions.
Fixed since preview 3
- Turning the paste shortcut off no longer breaks startup on KDE (Plasma 5) or on desktops with the GlobalShortcuts portal. Before, a saved
"paste": nullmade shortcut registration fail. - A paste shortcut you turned off no longer pastes when the desktop's portal binding is pressed. The portal owns that binding, so Scrawl now ignores it.
- When a recording starts while the recording pill is already open, the pill is left out of the captured frames again.
- Keyframe number chips are centred correctly on Linux.
- Settings › Recording lists the command transcriber as "Command (program)" when
transcribeCommandis set, instead of showing Parakeet. - Includes the captures folder setting from main (
"capturesDir"inconfig.json).
Known limits
- Ubuntu 24.04 or newer only. Plasma 6 and GNOME 48+ portal shortcuts are untested on a real desktop.
- On Wayland, input monitoring needs membership in the
inputgroup and a new login. The Window picker lists X11/XWayland windows only. - No cabled iPhone capture, video export, Sparkle updates or audio ducking on Linux.
- The reporter's Ryzen 8700G confirmation of #82 is still pending.
Verification
- macOS, Windows and Linux builds and unit tests passed.
- Both AppImages, instruction audit and packaged inference passed, including the model run with the AppImage's own libraries and the x86 run under Intel SDE Ice Lake.
The tag points to 79b131599662ac872fe8ab07e98728a6d93d46a0 on feat/linux (PR #24, still a draft). These are the exact tested CI artifacts. This prerelease does not update the stable site or the Sparkle feed.
