Kotilo now runs on Linux. This beta adds x64 packages for Linux: an AppImage for any distribution, a .deb for Debian and Ubuntu and an .rpm for Fedora and openSUSE. Nothing changes for Windows users apart from the About text.

New: Linux (x64)

  • Install: sudo apt install ./Kotilo_0.3.4_amd64.deb, sudo dnf install ./Kotilo-0.3.4-1.x86_64.rpm, or chmod +x Kotilo_0.3.4_amd64.AppImage and run it. Needs WebKitGTK 4.1 (Ubuntu 22.04, Debian 12, Fedora 38 or later).
  • What works: real terminals with your login shell ($SHELL, then zsh, bash, fish or pwsh), live agent status from hooks and plugins, the permission card, usage, cost and limits, tasks, themes and automatic updates.
  • Where things live: settings and state in ~/.config/kotilo, logs in ~/.local/share/kotilo/logs.
  • Not on Linux yet: dictation, the mascot, global hotkeys, the taskbar badge, the back-at-the-desk summary, and saving API keys for OpenAI-compatible AI providers (no keyring support yet; AI features through your installed agent CLI work). Settings for these are hidden on Linux. The tray icon (optional, Keep running in the tray) needs AppIndicator support; on GNOME, the AppIndicator extension.
  • Tested on Ubuntu 22.04 (GNOME) with Claude Code. Other distributions and agents should work the same way; please open an issue if something does not.

Known limitations (beta)

  • Not code-signed. On Windows, SmartScreen may warn ("More info → Run anyway"); Smart App Control blocks unsigned apps. Our SignPath Foundation application is pending; see the code signing policy. Linux packages are not signed either.
  • Linux: x64 only. macOS is planned.
