v0.2.0 — Sync your non-Steam saves to your own GitHub
First stable release. SaveWaypoint finds the game saves nothing else is backing up — emulators, GOG/itch titles, anything you added to Steam as a non-Steam shortcut — and syncs them to a private repo on your own GitHub account. No server of ours, no subscription, and because every backup is a commit, your version history comes free.
What it does
- Finds saves on its own. Known emulator locations, plus a scan of Proton prefixes. Each entry is rated by what is actually in the folder: 🟢 detected (a
SaveGamesfolder or.savfiles are there), 🟡 probable, 🔴 nothing saved yet. - Leaves Steam games alone. Steam Cloud already syncs them and a second writer racing it helps nobody, so they are filtered out — switchable, for the games Cloud does not cover.
- Signs in from your phone. GitHub device flow: the Deck shows a short code, you approve it on your phone. No keyboard, no browser on the handheld.
- Test before you trust it. Checks a save can be archived and written back, without uploading anything.
- Restore any earlier backup from the commit history.
- Updates itself, on a stable or beta channel.
Getting started
- Create a GitHub OAuth App and tick Enable Device Flow (see the README).
- Paste its Client ID, press Connect GitHub, approve on your phone.
- Manage saves…, switch on what you want, then Back up now.
Known limitation
Backing up is proven on a Steam Deck and the archives were verified to hold real save data. Restoring has not yet been exercised on a device. The code path is tested, but before you rely on it, do a dry run: back up a save, then restore the copy you just made.
Install
Download SaveWaypoint.zip below, then on the Deck in Desktop mode:
unzip -o SaveWaypoint.zip -d ~/homebrew/plugins/
sudo systemctl restart plugin_loader
