wt-vertical-tabs v1.1.0
Added
- Hover to peek: resting the mouse on a collapsed rail opens it to full width over the terminal, without moving or reflowing the terminal, and it closes when the mouse leaves. It stays open while a tab's menu or the new-tab menu is open, or a tab is being dragged. Mouse only.
- The new-tab button now sits right under the last tab, as in a browser. Once the list fills the sidebar it scrolls, with the button still in view at the foot. Its dropdown opens towards the free space.
Fixed
- Collapsing or expanding the sidebar now affects only the window whose button was clicked, not every Terminal window. New windows, and every window after a restart, start collapsed or expanded the way the last one was left.
Installing
- Install Windhawk 1.7 or later.
- In Windhawk, choose Create a New Mod, replace the template with the contents of
windows-terminal-vertical-tabs.wh.cppfrom this release, and click Compile Mod. - In Windows Terminal, right-click any tab and choose Turn on vertical tabs.
Windhawk compiles the mod on your machine; there is no binary in this release. SHA256SUMS.txt lets you check the file you downloaded: Get-FileHash .\windows-terminal-vertical-tabs.wh.cpp -Algorithm SHA256, compared case insensitively.

Added
- Vertical tab sidebar for Windows Terminal, as a Windhawk mod. The tab strip moves into a sidebar, each tab becomes a full-width row with its icon, title and close button, and the new-tab dropdown opens upwards from the foot of the sidebar.
- "Turn on vertical tabs" and "Turn off vertical tabs" in every tab's context menu. Horizontal by default; the choice persists across restarts.
- Collapse and expand button at the top of the sidebar: a 48 px icon rail with titles as tooltips. Persists across restarts.
- Settings for the sidebar width (120 to 600 px) and position (left or right).
- Live apply and exact restore on toggle, collapse, settings change and mod disable.
tools/build.py, which compiles the mod with Windhawk's own toolchain and can install it into a portable Windhawk, andtools/test-harness.wh.cpp, which keeps a test Terminal on its own virtual desktop and unable to take focus.
