KeyStepPro Studio v0.7.0
Two editions from one source tree, both free and open source (AGPL-3.0). Lite is the recommended one: it is the editor, nothing else. Full is the same editor plus VST3 hosting.

Both are maintained. The editions replace each other if you install one over the other. Lite does not make sound: play the KeyStep through its own outputs or your DAW.
What changed
- New Lite edition (no VST3 SDK, no plugin helper). CMake option
KSP_ENABLE_VST_HOST(OFF = Lite, ON = Full). - Rec (overdub) removed in both editions: it only recorded the echo of the KeyStep's own sequencer.
- Lite: Seq / Arp / Drum keys are lit correctly when a project loads.
- Library: double click or Enter opens a project, and the window closes after opening.
- New track card chapter in the manual; screenshots refreshed.
- Installer and CI build both editions (Windows and macOS).
Install
Unsigned: SmartScreen will warn ("More info" > "Run anyway"). SHA-256 sums: SHA256SUMS.txt (Lite) and SHA256SUMS-Full.txt. Close MIDI Control Center before connecting. Only official firmware 2.5.20 is written to, with a backup before each write and a read-back check.
macOS: KeyStepProStudio-0.7.0-mac.zip (Lite) and KeyStepProStudio-Full-0.7.0-mac.zip (Full), universal (Apple silicon and Intel), macOS 11+. Ad-hoc signed, not notarized: the first time, macOS says "Apple could not verify": click Done, then System Settings > Privacy & Security > Open Anyway (details in the manual, chapter 1). Each zip has a .sha256 file.

The arpeggiator, tempo and swing, per-track MIDI channels, pattern ops and redesigned track cards.
Highlights
- Arpeggiator (tracks 2-4): on/off, mode (Up, Down, Exclu, Inclu, Rand, Order, Poly), octave, swing and division, decoded on a real KeyStep Pro.
- Track cards: taller, with Seq / Arp keys (Seq / Drum on track 1), a vertical volume slider, M and S keys, a plugin icon key and a glow on what is on. Clicking any control selects the card.
- Tempo and swing of the project, and a MIDI channel per track (Auto or 1-16), in the Project Map.
- Ops button: nudge left / right, reverse and invert the pattern.
- Project Map: editable chains in the Scene Matrix, drum patterns shown for track 1 in drum mode, scene mute.
- Generate puts tracks 2-4 back in Seq (a track in Arp mode only arpeggiates the keys you hold, so it would not play the generated patterns), and says that the scenes it writes have no mutes.
- Per-track MIDI channels reach the instruments: each track's VST3 listens on the track's channel from the project, or 1-4 (drums 10) on Auto.
- Drum grid: the END line has a grip to drag, and the STEPS display shows the drum pattern's length.
- Write uploads the whole open project. If you changed the KeyStep by hand after the last Read, Read first; the backup taken before every Write keeps the previous state.

A musical Generate: scenes with an energy curve, your own key and scale, and a clearer Project Map.
Highlights
- Musical arrangement (Generate, Techno, House and Drum & bass; on by default): eight scenes with an energy curve (intro, groove, drop, drop variation, breakdown, build, peak, outro). Track 1 gets five drum patterns, tracks 2-4 get twelve (four energy levels x three chords), and pattern 16 is empty on every track to silence a track in a scene. No role pattern comes out silent.
- Key and Scale in Generate: pick them or leave Auto (the style's own). The description under the style follows your choice.
- Clearer Generate: a plain-language note under the seed box, and the window and the status line say which track plays what (drums, bass, chords, lead).
- Clean track 1: a style leaves the sequencer patterns of track 1 empty, so switching Drums off shows clean patterns in the style's key; Ambient puts track 1 back in sequencer mode.
- Project Map: click a scene number to select it. Its column stays marked, the side panel shows the whole scene (each track's chain and how many bars it lasts), and the editor shows the pattern the selected track plays in it. Clickable things show a hand cursor.
- Write shows one progress bar for backup, write and read-back.
- Tools menu fix, macOS build in CI, and the VST3 helper is now called
KspVstHelper. - Hardware: a pattern with no kick reads back one drum value as unreadable on the KeyStep; the read-back check now accepts it, so
KspGenno longer reports an error.

Highlights
- Edit scenes in the Project Map: click a cell of the Scene matrix and pick the pattern (1-16) that track plays in that scene, or remove the cell's chain. Right-click a scene number to Copy, Paste or Clear it. Undo edit takes back the last change. Edits go to the open project; use Save and Write as usual.

KeyStepPro-Studio-Manual.pdfis installed next to the app (and is in the zip). Open it from Tools > User manual (PDF). - Portable zip:

Generator styles and drum patterns.
Highlights
- Generate... with styles: besides Ambient (Classic, Ethereal, Dark, Meditative) there are Techno (Driving), House (Deep, Chill, Melodic) and Drum & bass (Liquid). A style puts track 1 in drum mode with a groove (the last variation ends with a fill) and writes bass, chords and a lead on tracks 2-4, plus the scenes. It also sets the project tempo (techno 130, house 118-128, drum & bass 174 BPM). The window shows a magic wand so it is easy to find.
- Drum grid: when track 1 is in drum mode, the grid shows 24 drum lanes named after the KeyStep's default General MIDI drum map (kick 36, snare 38, clap 39, hats 42 and 46, ...). Click to add or remove hits, drag to paint, and use the mouse wheel to set velocity. Click a lane name to hear it.
- Drums switch on track 1's card (drum or sequencer mode; both kinds of patterns stay stored) and Clear to empty the pattern shown.
- In drum mode, the track 1 instrument listens on the drum channel (10), so a General MIDI style kit or an Ableton Drum Rack plays without remapping.
- Drum pattern writes verified on a KeyStep Pro (firmware 2.5.20) with a full read-back.
- Easier to use: a click anywhere on a track card selects it, with a hand pointer over the cards you can select; the number is centred on its dot; FX... is on the top bar.
