Talk to Dot v1.3.0

Choose the shortcut’s home-screen icon as well as its Dot name. The redesigned settings screen includes a live preview and six icon choices: Frog, Cat, Fox, Bear, Owl, and Classic D. The green frog is the default; zip remains the default Dot name.

  • Original Dot-style character illustrations with rounded shapes, expressive eyes, shading, and bow ties. These are project artwork, not official OpenAI assets.
  • Save changes saves both the exact Dot name and icon; Save and open Dot saves both and opens the conversation. Unsaved icon previews do not change the launcher.
  • Reset name to zip restores only the default name, leaving the icon choice independent.
  • The icon selection is saved locally and retained across settings reopening and signed updates. No new permissions or network access are added.
  • Icon changes use Android launcher aliases, while the navigation activity and Accessibility service remain enabled. The original launcher identifier is retained for the default frog; the selected alias exposes the Choose Dot shortcut.
  • SVG sources and a rendering helper are included. Committed PNG files keep normal Android builds independent of graphics tooling.

Launchers may cache icons or remove an entry when its component changes. Add Talk to Dot again if needed; phone buttons targeting an old icon component may need the app reselected. Android App info and the Accessibility service use the default frog. Navigation speed and behavior are unchanged from v1.2.0.

Validation

On-device checks passed for the signed update from v1.2.1, unsaved preview behavior, every icon choice resolving to a single launcher entry, saved-name retention, settings access and persistence, signed-update persistence with a non-default icon, and navigation to Zip while the default launcher alias is disabled. A cold ChatGPT restart from Chrome also reached Zip with Cat selected. The exact Tasks → Home → tap the existing Cat icon → Zip flow passed. Niagara preserved the existing home-screen position and displayed the selected Cat artwork. Android registered Choose Dot for the active alias; the tested Niagara long-press menu used its own controls, so the Accessibility settings gear remains the documented fallback. The green frog is restored after checks.

Talk to Dot v1.2.1

The app and repository are now Talk to Dot, reflecting support for any configured Dot name. zip remains the default.

  • Renames the Android launcher label, setup text, and Accessibility service label to Talk to Dot, with a D icon.
  • Moves the repository to looizao/talk-to-dot and updates badges, setup instructions, build commands, and release documentation.
  • New builds and releases provide talk-to-dot.apk with SHA256SUMS.txt.
  • Preserves the signing key, Android package, Accessibility service component, and saved settings so the signed APK can update existing installations.
  • Keeps the navigation behavior and configuration from v1.2.0. Existing v1.1.0 and v1.2.0 APK assets retain their historical filenames.

Validation

The signed APK is built and verified through the release workflow. On-device validation passed: the signed APK updated the existing installation, Android App info and the bound Accessibility service displayed Talk to Dot, the saved name remained zip, and launching the renamed shortcut reached the exact Zip composer.

@github-actions github-actions released this 01 Oct 17:24

Historical release: this version predates the Talk to Dot rename in v1.2.1. Its existing download is talk-to-zip.apk and displays the former app name. Use the latest release for current branding.

Choose your Dot

The shortcut now uses a saved Dot name, with zip as the default. Existing installations continue opening Zip until you change the setting.

  • Long-press the app icon and select Choose Dot, or open the Accessibility service’s settings.
  • Save the exact sidebar name, including capitalization. Leading and trailing whitespace is trimmed; blank names are rejected.
  • Save and open Dot launches the chosen Dot; Reset to zip restores the default.
  • The Accessibility service uses the saved name for sidebar selection, composer confirmation, and timeout messages. It matches the composer exactly so similar names do not produce a false success.
  • The name remains stored locally across restarts and updates. The launcher name in this historical APK remains the former app name; v1.2.1 introduces Talk to Dot.

The app retains the same signing key and package, allowing an update over the previous release. No new permissions are requested. It still acts only in ChatGPT for 30 seconds after launch and never sends a message or starts a call.

UI labels remain tied to the tested ChatGPT interface; configuring a Dot name does not add translation support. The name must correspond to a Dot you already have in ChatGPT.

Faster navigation

Fixed waits between different screens are replaced by Accessibility-event handling, with a short watchdog for missed events and throttled retries of unchanged controls. Warm Tasks-to-Zip navigation measured 926 ms versus 2,266 ms before the change on the test phone. The full Tasks → Home → launcher icon flow and ChatGPT restart also passed. A restarted ChatGPT took 8,032 ms to reach the target, so cold startup is still a limitation. Measurements end at accessibility confirmation of the composer, not final animation completion.

Navigation reliability

Navigation now refreshes nodes and rechecks the active ChatGPT window before interaction. Selecting a Dot waits for its composer instead of immediately reopening the menu from a transitional old-chat screen; a bounded recovery window retries stalled transitions. A short stable-composer check prevents premature success. Navigation stays armed for up to 30 seconds, pauses when another app is foreground, and resumes when ChatGPT returns. Service reconnection preserves an active request.

ADB device checks cover background music, cold startup from Chrome under bounded CPU load, and a switch to Music during startup followed by returning to ChatGPT. scripts/device-check.py reproduces these flows; see the README for prerequisites and local snapshot handling.

Final device checks passed with playback active: launch from Music (1,061 ms), cold start from Chrome with two bounded CPU load workers (6,711 ms), and switching to Music during cold startup before returning (4,294 ms, including a two-second interruption). Durations include launch request to composer confirmation and are approximate because ADB UI inspection affects Accessibility delivery. The load workers were stopped and music restored to its previous paused state after testing.

Configuration validation

On-device checks passed for the default zip, saving and reopening a custom name, blank-name rejection without replacing the saved name, timeout for a nonexistent name without selecting another Dot, resetting to zip across reopening, and Save and open Dot reaching the Zip composer. Zip was restored as the selected name after these checks.

Talk to Dot v1.1.0

@github-actions github-actions released this 01 Oct 16:34

Historical release: this version predates the Talk to Dot rename in v1.2.1. Its existing download is talk-to-zip.apk and displays the former app name. Use the latest release for current branding.

First public release

Talk to Dot opens ChatGPT and navigates to the Dot conversation named zip using Android Accessibility automation.

  • Handles Tasks and other nested screens with Navigate up / Navegar para cima, then opens the sidebar and selects Zip.
  • Brings ChatGPT's main activity forward when an old browser tab is above it.
  • Restricts automation to ChatGPT and a 15-second window after shortcut launch.
  • Includes source, setup instructions, CLI builds, and GitHub Actions builds and releases.

Validation

Navigation was tested on a Motorola Edge 60 Pro running ChatGPT 1.2026.272. The exact Tasks → Home → tap Talk to Dot → Message zip flow passed twice, including with an ordinary chat underneath Tasks. The user also confirmed the installed fix worked.

The APK is signed with the same key as the local prototype, so it can update that installation. CI development APKs use a different key.

Compatibility

This version requires a Dot named zip and the observed UI labels. Accessibility access is required. ChatGPT updates or translated labels may require a source update. There is no public Dot deep link or configurable Dot-name setting in this release. See the README for setup and customization.
