Coming From Spritewright

Mark Rogers edited this page Oct 27, 2026 · 5 revisions

Until 0.6.0 this plugin was spritewright, which did only the animation half. spritewright was never published; 0.6.0 is the first public release, and the repository starts from one fresh commit.

What was renamed

Before (spritewright 0.5.0) 0.6.0
plugin spritewright plugin pixelwright
skill spritewright skill pixelwright-animate (the same skill, renamed), beside the new hub pixelwright and the new pixelwright-make
skills/spritewright/scripts/sw.py skills/pixelwright/scripts/pxw.py
SPRITEWRIGHT_AW PIXELWRIGHT_AW (the old name is still read, after the new one)
tests/test_sw.py tests/test_pxw.py

The left column is from the CHANGELOG entry for 0.6.0. Briefs, plans, sheets and gates files keep their formats.

The shim

skills/pixelwright-animate/scripts/sw.py runs pxw.py with the same arguments, so scripts and notes that call sw.py keep working. The README says it stays for one release.

$ python sw.py --version
0.8.4
$ echo $?
0
$ python sw.py frames brief.json out-shim --only use
{
  "ok": true,
  "id": "forge",
  "gates": "out-shim/forge.gates.json",
  "animations": {
    "use": {
      "pass": true,
      "frames": 10,
      "rest_frame_identical": true,
      "changed_outside_mask": 0,
      "new_colours": 0,
      "noticeable": true,
      "sheet": "out-shim/forge-use-10f.png"
    }
  }
}
$ echo $?
0
out-shim/forge-use-10f.png identical to out-use/forge-use-10f.png: True

With only the old variable set, doctor through the shim still finds artwright:

  "missing": null,
  "aw": "<artwright>/skills/artwright/scripts/aw.py",

Byte-identical output

The CHANGELOG says the animation effects are byte-identical to spritewright's: the frame builds of the animation tests hash the same before and after the move. That comparison was not repeated for this wiki, since spritewright was never released. What was checked: two runs of 0.8.4 give the same sheet and the shim gives the same sheet as pxw.py. Earlier 0.8.2 runs printed the same reports on Windows and Linux; Linux was not re-run for 0.8.4.

Moving over in Claude Code

From the README: uninstall the old plugin (claude plugin uninstall spritewright@<marketplace>) and install pixelwright (Getting started). Not run for this wiki. Asking for "spritewright" still reaches the hub skill: its description lists the old name.
