Release list
Pokémon DS Widescreen for PC, Mac, Steam Deck and handhelds (Windows, macOS and Linux): all seven games
Pokémon DS Widescreen for PC, Mac, Steam Deck and handhelds: all seven games (Black 2, White 2, Black, White, SoulSilver, HeartGold, Platinum) on Windows, macOS and Linux, as one widescreen picture, up to 4K, 60 fps.
The same program as the Switch's all-games download, for a PC, a Mac, a Steam Deck or a Windows handheld (ROG Ally, Legion Go, MSI Claw and the like): start it and pick the game from a list. Nothing of the games is in it: you bring your own ROMs. On an Android phone? See android-v1. On an iPhone or iPad? ios-v1.
Update (29 October)
- New: Mac (Apple silicon and Intel). See Mac below for how to install it.
- New: change any key or button. CONTROLS > KEYS AND BUTTONS in the pause menu: give any DS button, the pause menu, fast forward or swapping the screens another key or controller button (triggers too). Giving one a button another one had swaps the two; RESET ALL puts them back. The game list follows the ones you change.
- Button prompts match your controller: the PlayStation symbols on a PS4 or PS5 pad, A / B / ZL / ZR on a Switch Pro controller, Xbox names on others, the keyboard's keys with no controller.
- The pause menu in groups: RESUME, SAVE STATE, LOAD STATE and FAST FORWARD up top, then DISPLAY, GRAPHICS and CONTROLS, each a page of its own. The settings page in the game list opens on the same groups (plus SHORTCUTS and HELP).
- Game list: any gamepad works in it now, and SETTINGS can be chosen with the D-pad (up from the top row).
- Change keys and buttons from the game list too: SETTINGS > CONTROLS > KEYS AND BUTTONS, before you start a game.
- New: cheats (Action Replay codes). Put
usrcheat.dat(the R4 / DeSmuME cheat database) or your own codes in acheatsfolder besidesaves, then turn them on with CHEATS in the pause menu. The README explains the files. - SoulSilver and HeartGold: Running Shoes from the X menu. The touch screen's button for them is out of view, so with the X menu open, Y (or a click on RUN ON / OFF beside the menu) turns them on and off.
- SoulSilver and HeartGold: the title screen and the opening film fill the view, with both of the DS's screens in it instead of one.
- New: a Linux AppImage for Gear Lever and other AppImage managers, which keep it up to date. See Download.
- LOWER RES WHEN BUSY is now off to start (also if it was on before): your 3D resolution stays put. Turn it on in the settings if your PC struggles in heavy scenes.
- A controller's START opens the pause menu (Menu on Xbox, Options on PlayStation; the games hardly use the DS's START). START BUTTON on the settings page sets it back to the DS's START. Enter on the keyboard is always the DS's START.
- Platinum: the introduction on one screen. Professor Rowan fills the view instead of the two screens side by side; for his two questions that take a touch, the YES / NO buttons or the Poké Ball appear at the right edge. A answers YES (B: NO) and presses the Poké Ball's button too.
Download
- Windows:
pokemon-ds-wide-pc-windows-x86_64.zip - Linux and Steam Deck:
pokemon-ds-wide-pc-linux-x86_64.tar.gz(nothing else to install: SDL2 comes with it) - Linux as an AppImage:
pokemon-ds-wide-pc-linux-x86_64.AppImage, the program as one file. Add it to Gear Lever (or another AppImage manager) and it updates itself from this release. Its ROMs, saves and settings live in~/.local/share/pokemon-ds-wide(press O in the game list to open itsromsfolder). - Windows handhelds (ROG Ally, Legion Go, MSI Claw, ...): the Windows download
- Mac:
pokemon-ds-wide-pc-macos-arm64.zip(Apple silicon: M1 and newer) orpokemon-ds-wide-pc-macos-x86_64.zip(Intel), macOS 11 or newer. New: see Mac below.
Install
- Unpack it anywhere you like (not inside Program Files).
- Put your ROMs in its
romsfolder (any names).- Black 2, White 2, Black, White: any English copy (US or Europe).
- SoulSilver, HeartGold, Platinum: the English US versions.
- Start
Pokemon DS Launcher.exe(Linux:pokemon-ds-wide) and pick a game: arrow keys or a controller's D-pad, then Enter or A. Press H (or a controller's Y) in the list for the settings: every option in the menu, each explained.
Windows may warn that the program is from an unknown publisher the first time: choose "More info", then "Run anyway".
It starts in borderless fullscreen at 1080P with 60 FPS: change either in the settings (H in the game list) or the Esc menu, or press F11 for a window. The game list shows each game's box art (your own pictures in an icons folder take its place: see the README.txt).
Controls: a controller (Xbox, PlayStation, Switch Pro and others) plays as a DS; hold its right trigger to fast forward. On the keyboard: arrow keys for the D-pad, X/Z for A/B, S/A for X/Y, Q/W for L/R, Enter for START, the mouse for the touch screen. Left Shift fast forwards while held. Esc opens the menu (settings, save states, QUIT back to the game list), F11 is borderless fullscreen. CONTROLS > KEYS AND BUTTONS in the menu changes any of them. The README.txt inside has the full list.
Use your own save
Carry on from your own save: from another emulator, a flash cart or your real cartridge. Copy it into the saves folder beside the program under the game's name.
| Game | Save name |
|---|---|
| Black 2 / White 2 | black2.sav / white2.sav |
| Black / White | black.sav / white.sav |
| SoulSilver / HeartGold | soulsilver.sav / heartgold.sav |
| Platinum | platinum.sav |
- Which files work: a plain
.sav, as melonDS, DeSmuME (Export Backup Memory), flash carts (TWiLight Menu++, R4 and the like) and cartridge dump tools (Checkpoint, JKSM, GodMode9) make it. A DraStic or DeSmuME.dsv, or an Action Replay save (.duc), first goes throughtools/bw2/convert_save.py. - Check it worked: the game list shows SAVE FOUND under the game (NEW GAME: not found).
- Back up first: a save copied in replaces the one there under that name.
Mac
- Download the one for your Mac. Apple menu > About This Mac: if it says Chip: Apple M1 (or M2, M3, M4, ...), take
pokemon-ds-wide-pc-macos-arm64.zip; if it says Processor: Intel, takepokemon-ds-wide-pc-macos-x86_64.zip. - Unzip it (double-click it in Downloads; Safari may have done it already) and drag Pokemon DS Widescreen into Applications.
- Open it once. macOS says it can't check the app (it isn't notarised by Apple): click Done. Then go to System Settings > Privacy & Security, scroll down to the line about Pokemon DS Widescreen and click Open Anyway, then Open. You only do this once. Or, in Terminal:
xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine "/Applications/Pokemon DS Widescreen.app", then open it as any app. - Add your ROMs: press O in the game list. The Finder opens its
romsfolder (~/Library/Application Support/Pokemon DS Widescreen/roms): put your ROMs in it and they appear in the list. Your own saves go in thesavesfolder next to it.
The keys and a controller work as on a PC; Ctrl+Cmd+F (or F11) switches between fullscreen and a window. A Mac's OpenGL stops short of what WORLD ON GPU needs, so the processor draws the widescreen world, at 720P to start: a MacBook Air M1 holds 60 FPS at 1080P.
Steam Deck and handhelds
Made to be played with a controller, so a handheld's own buttons and sticks work as they are: no keyboard or mouse needed, and a touch screen works like the mouse on the DS's touch screen. The picture fills 16:10 screens (Steam Deck, Legion Go) as well as 16:9 ones, without black bars.
Steam Deck: in Desktop Mode, unpack the Linux download and put your ROMs in its roms folder. In Steam: Games > Add a Non-Steam Game to My Library > Browse (file type: All Files) and choose pokemon-ds-wide. (Or press H in the game list, choose DESKTOP SHORTCUTS, and each game is in the Add a Non-Steam Game list by name, with its box art, starting straight away.) Start it from your library in Gaming Mode with a gamepad layout, and set 3D RESOLUTION to 720P for the Deck's 1280x800 screen.
Windows handhelds (ROG Ally, Legion Go, MSI Claw, ...): unpack the Windows download, put your ROMs in roms and start Pokemon DS Launcher.exe; DESKTOP SHORTCUTS (H in the game list) puts each game on the desktop for your launcher of choice. 720P or 1080P suits these screens.
Not yet timed on handhelds: please tell us how yours runs (see below).
What it needs
- Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit), or 64-bit Linux from late 2023 on (Ubuntu 24.04, Fedora 39, SteamOS 3.5 or newer).
- For WORLD ON GPU (on by default): a graphics card with OpenGL 4.3, which nearly any from 2012 on has with up-to-date drivers. Without it, turn WORLD ON GPU off in the Esc menu and the processor draws the world instead (that wants a much faster processor).
How fast a PC? Not measured on a range of PCs yet, so these are estimates. The Switch runs all seven games at 60 fps, and one core of any PC from the last eight years or so is several times as fast as one of the Switch's. What grows with your screen is 3D RESOLUTION (in the Esc menu: 720P, 1080P, 1440P (2K), 2160P (4K)), drawn by the graphics card:
- Minimum: a 4-core processor (Intel Core i5 6th generation or Ryzen 1000 on), graphics built into the processor (Intel HD 520 or Radeon Vega 8 class) at 3D RESOLUTION 720P to 1080P, 4 GB of memory.
- Recommended: a recent 6-core processor and a graphics card such as a GTX 1060 or RX 580 for 1440P; 2160P (4K) wants an RTX 2070 or better.
If yours struggles, turn on LOWER RES WHEN BUSY (off to start): it lowers the 3D resolution for a moment instead of slowing the game down. Please tell us how yours runs: open a [bug report](https://github.com/mames...
Pokémon DS Widescreen for iPhone and iPad: all seven games
Pokémon DS Widescreen for iPhone and iPad: all seven games (Black 2, White 2, Black, White, SoulSilver, HeartGold, Platinum) in one app, as one widescreen picture at 60 fps.
The same program as the Android, PC and Switch downloads, for an iPhone or iPad: start it and pick the game from a list. Nothing of the games is in it: you bring your own ROMs.
Download
pokemon-ds-wide-ios.ipa(iOS 14 or newer), installed by sideloading (below)
Install
Apple only lets apps from its App Store install on their own, so this one is sideloaded: a sideloading tool signs it with your own Apple ID (a free one works) and puts it on your iPhone. From a Windows PC or a Mac:
- Install a sideloading tool: Sideloadly or AltStore (on Windows, also Apple's Apple Devices app or iTunes).
- Download
pokemon-ds-wide-ios.ipa, plug in your iPhone (tap Trust on it), and give the IPA to the tool with your Apple ID. - On the iPhone: turn on Settings > Privacy & Security > Developer Mode (it restarts), then trust your Apple ID in Settings > General > VPN & Device Management.
- Put your ROMs in the Files app: On My iPhone > Pokemon DS Widescreen > roms (AirDrop, iCloud Drive, or from a PC: the Apple Devices app's Files tab, or the Finder on a Mac). FOLDER at the top of the game list opens that folder. Tap a game twice to play.
- Black 2, White 2, Black, White: any English copy (US or Europe).
- SoulSilver, HeartGold, Platinum: the English US versions.
With a free Apple ID, iOS stops opening sideloaded apps after 7 days: sideload it again (your saves stay). AltStore and SideStore can do that for you.
Controls
- Touch: on-screen buttons (D-pad, A, B, X, Y, L, R, START, SELECT, and MENU at the top for the pause menu). Tap the picture itself to touch the DS's touch screen.
- Controller (Xbox, PlayStation, Backbone and others): plays as a DS and hides the on-screen buttons. Start opens the pause menu, the right trigger fast forwards. CONTROLS > KEYS AND BUTTONS changes which button does what.
- Settings: SETTINGS at the top right of the game list: every option in the pause menu, each explained.
Use your own save
Carry on from your own save: copy it into On My iPhone > Pokemon DS Widescreen > saves in the Files app under the game's name.
| Game | Save name |
|---|---|
| Black 2 / White 2 | black2.sav / white2.sav |
| Black / White | black.sav / white.sav |
| SoulSilver / HeartGold | soulsilver.sav / heartgold.sav |
| Platinum | platinum.sav |
A plain .sav, as melonDS, DeSmuME (Export Backup Memory), flash carts and cartridge dump tools make it. The game list shows SAVE FOUND under the game when it is there. Back up first: a save copied in replaces the one there under that name.
Cheats go in a cheats folder beside saves (see the README).
What to expect
iOS lets no app make code as it runs, so the faster way the other versions run the DS (melonDS's JIT) is left out: a recent iPhone or iPad (an iPhone 13 or newer) is the most likely to keep up. The 3D world is drawn by the processor at 720P to start (3D RESOLUTION in the settings; 540P or LOWER RES WHEN BUSY if yours slows down). QUIT in the pause menu may close the app rather than go back to the list: open it again to pick another game.
Please tell us how it runs on yours: open a bug report with your iPhone or iPad model and the game.log from the Pokemon DS Widescreen folder in the Files app.
Also on Android, Nintendo Switch and PC, Mac, Steam Deck and handhelds.
Enjoying it? Tips are welcome but never expected: buy me a coffee or PayPal.

Download
pokemon-ds-wide-android.apk(Android 7.0 or newer, 64-bit phones)

- Put your ROMs in a folder on the phone (any names), for example
ROMsin its internal storage.- Black 2, White 2, Black, White: any English copy (US or Europe).
- SoulSilver, HeartGold, Platinum: the English US versions.
- Start Pokemon DS, tap the screen, allow access to files, and pick that folder. Tap a game twice (or press A on a controller) to play.
New builds install over this one and keep your saves and settings.
Controls
- Touch: on-screen buttons (D-pad, A, B, X, Y, L, R, START, SELECT, and MENU at the top for the pause menu). Tap the picture itself to touch the DS's touch screen.
- Controller (Bluetooth or USB: Xbox, PlayStation, Backbone, Razer Kishi and others): plays as a DS and hides the on-screen buttons. Start opens the pause menu, the right trigger fast forwards.

Use your own save
Carry on from your own save: from another emulator, a flash cart or your real cartridge. Copy it into the saves folder inside your ROMs folder (made for you on the first start) under the game's name.
| Game | Save name |
|---|---|
| Black 2 / White 2 | black2.sav / white2.sav |
| Black / White | black.sav / white.sav |
| SoulSilver / HeartGold | soulsilver.sav / heartgold.sav |
| Platinum | platinum.sav |
- Which files work: a plain
.sav, as melonDS, DeSmuME (Export Backup Memory), flash carts (TWiLight Menu++, R4 and the like) and cartridge dump tools (Checkpoint, JKSM, GodMode9) make it. A DraStic.dsvfirst goes throughtools/bw2/convert_save.py. - Check it worked: the game list shows SAVE FOUND under the game (NEW GAME: not found).
- Back up first: a save copied in replaces the one there under that name.
How fast a phone?
The 3D world is drawn by the processor, at 720P to start (3D RESOLUTION in the settings; turn on LOWER RES WHEN BUSY, off to start, to drop it for a moment instead of slowing down). Tested on a Pixel 9 Pro XL, where it runs at full speed. Other phones are not timed yet: please tell us how yours runs in a bug report, with your phone's model and the game.log from Android/data/io.github.mamesj.pokemonds/files.
Known limits
- Tested on one phone so far (a Pixel 9 Pro XL) and Android's emulator.
- Platinum: the Pokétch (the watch on the touch screen) isn't shown during normal play.
- SoulSilver and HeartGold: at map borders (e.g. Route 29 / New Bark Town), parts of the neighbouring map pop in and out at the sides of the wide view.
Also on iPhone and iPad, Nintendo Switch and PC, Mac, Steam Deck and handhelds.
Enjoying it? Tips are welcome but never expected: buy me a coffee or PayPal.

Pokémon DS Widescreen for Nintendo Switch: all seven games
All seven games in one program: Pokémon Black 2, White 2, Black, White, SoulSilver, HeartGold and now Platinum on your modded Switch, as one widescreen picture, 720p, 60 fps.
One program for every game: start it and pick the game from a grid. Nothing of the games is in it: you bring your own ROMs. On a PC, Steam Deck or handheld? The same program for Windows and Linux is pc-v1. On an Android phone? android-v1. On an iPhone or iPad? ios-v1.
Update (29 October)
- New: change any button. CONTROLS > KEYS AND BUTTONS in the pause menu: give any DS button, the pause menu, fast forward or swapping the screens another button (ZL and ZR too). Giving one a button another one had swaps the two; RESET ALL puts them back.
- The pause menu in groups: RESUME, SAVE STATE, LOAD STATE and FAST FORWARD up top, then DISPLAY, GRAPHICS and CONTROLS, each a page of its own. The settings page (Y in the game list) opens on the same groups: B goes back a step, Y closes it.
- Change buttons from the game list too: Y > CONTROLS > KEYS AND BUTTONS, before you start a game. Handy with a third-party controller.
- New: cheats (Action Replay codes). Put
usrcheat.dat(the R4 / DeSmuME cheat database) or your own codes in/switch/pokemon-ds-wide/cheats/, then turn them on with CHEATS in the pause menu. The README explains the files. - SoulSilver and HeartGold: Running Shoes from the X menu. The touch screen's button for them is out of view, so with the X menu open, Y (or a tap on RUN ON / OFF beside the menu) turns them on and off.
- SoulSilver and HeartGold: the title screen and the opening film fill the view, with both of the DS's screens in it instead of one.
- Fixed: HOME MENU ICONS could fail with THIS BUILD HAS NO FORWARDER when none of your games needed the program's built-in tables (only SoulSilver and HeartGold, or games from the older one-game downloads).
- LOWER DETAIL WHEN BUSY is now off to start (also if it was on before): the world keeps its full detail. Turn it on in the settings (Y in the list) if you want it to drop the detail in heavy scenes instead of slowing down.
- + opens the pause menu on its own (the games hardly use the DS's START). Prefer the old way? START BUTTON in the settings (Y in the list) sets + back to the DS's START, with + and − together for the menu.
- Platinum: the introduction on one screen. Professor Rowan fills the view instead of the two screens side by side; for his two questions that take a touch, the YES / NO buttons or the Poké Ball appear at the right edge. A answers YES (B: NO) and presses the Poké Ball's button too.
- Fixed: the touch screen did nothing. Taps never reached the game, so Platinum's first YES / NO with Professor Rowan ("Please touch a button on the Touch Screen") could not be answered. Tap it in handheld mode, or press A for YES and B for NO.
- Playing docked: the right stick moves a touch cursor and ZL touches where it points, for the questions that only take a touch. Pressing the right stick in shows the other screen.
Update (28 October)
-
Fast forward on the right trigger (ZR) in every game, and faster: hold it for up to about twice the speed on the Switch, with smoother pictures while it runs.
-
Fixed a crash in heavy scenes when LOWER DETAIL WHEN BUSY lowered the world's detail to 423 lines.
-
Smoother in towns and battles. Work the Switch did between the game's own steps (the wide view's polygon lists, preparing the 3D pictures for the graphics chip and collecting them) now runs on its spare cores. Measured from save states, frames running late: White 2's Aspertia City from about half to under 1%, Black 2's Castelia City to 0.1%, a Black 2 battle from 6% to 2.5%, Platinum's Snowpoint City from 4.8% to 1.7%.
-
Smoother still in heavy scenes. The game now runs one frame ahead of the screen and shows every frame at an even time, so one slow frame no longer shows as a stutter. At a 1581 MHz CPU clock, frames shown unevenly: White 2's Aspertia City from 39% to 17%, a Black 2 battle from 29% to 19%, Platinum's Snowpoint City from 30% to 10%, a HeartGold route from 19% to 2%. The cost is one frame (17 ms) more between a button and the screen.
-
Settings in the game list: press Y to set the pause menu's options before you play, each with what it does explained.
-
A shorter pause menu: WORLD ON GPU and STICK TOUCH CURSOR are gone (the world is always drawn by the graphics chip, and the touch cursor is always on).
-
A game picked from the list runs as smoothly as one started on its own. The list used to leave the Switch's graphics slower for the game after it; the program now starts itself again for the game you pick (a second of black screen).
-
Fixed a rare freeze a few seconds into a game (black screen, only holding POWER got out of it) with sys-clk installed.
-
New: a PC version (Windows and Linux), its own release: pc-v1.
-
A new look for the game list: black with white text and red details, and four games across, so all seven fit on one screen.
-
New: Pokémon Platinum. Sinnoh joins the list: put your Platinum ROM (the US version, game code
CPUE) in theromsfolder and it shows up with the others. -
No more stretched trees. Trees and other objects at the edges of the widescreen view were sometimes stretched out to the edge. They now keep their own size.
-
No more black lines popping in. Thin dotted black lines along the ground in SoulSilver and HeartGold are gone.
-
SoulSilver and HeartGold: smoother battles. Fixed frame drops while a battle waits for your command (please report it with your
game.logif you still see them), and the chosen battle button now has a clear white outline.
Install
- Unzip
pokemon-ds-wide-all-switch.zipto the root of your SD card. It makes/switch/pokemon-ds-wide/with an emptyromsfolder inside. - Copy your ROMs into
/switch/pokemon-ds-wide/roms/(any names).- Black 2, White 2, Black, White: any English copy (US or Europe).
- SoulSilver, HeartGold, Platinum: the English US versions.
- Hold R while starting any game to open the Homebrew Menu, pick Pokemon DS Widescreen, then the game. QUIT in the pause menu (press +) saves and goes back to the list; + in the list goes back to the Homebrew Menu.
Use your own save
Carry on from your own save: from another emulator, a flash cart or your real cartridge. Copy it to /switch/pokemon-ds-wide/ on the SD card under the game's name (a game from an older one-game download keeps its save in that download's folder).
Good to know
Coming from the older one-game downloads? Keep their folders: the list also shows the games in their folders and plays each with the save already there, so you don't need to move anything. Those downloads are no longer updated: this program has every fix. If the same game is in both places it is listed twice, each copy with its own save, and the label under it says which folder it is in.
Pictures in the list: each game shows its box art. For your own, put a square JPEG or PNG in /switch/pokemon-ds-wide/icons/, named after the game's code: IRBO Black, IRAO White, IREO Black 2, IRDO White 2, IPKE HeartGold, IPGE SoulSilver, CPUE Platinum (e.g. icons/IREO.jpg).
New: HOME Menu icons. In the list press Y for the settings and choose HOME MENU ICONS: each game in the list gets its own icon on the HOME Menu, with its box art, that starts it straight away with no holding R. It is made on your console (no PC or keys file needed). Like any forwarder, the icons need sigpatches to start. Choose it again after adding games; to remove one, Options on its icon, Data Management, Delete Software.
Recommended: sys-clk at CPU 1785 / GPU 460 / memory 1600 MHz (handheld); without it the games drop frames in busy places.
Known limits
- The settings (pause menu) are shared by all the games in this program.
- QUIT in the pause menu goes back to the list, also when the game was started from its HOME Menu icon.
- Platinum: the Pokétch (the watch on the touch screen) isn't shown during normal play; its apps are one press of the screen-swap button away.
- SoulSilver and HeartGold: at map borders (e.g. Route 29 / New Bark Town), parts of the neighbouring map pop in and out at the sides of the wide view.
Found a bug? Open a bug report and attach game.log from /switch/pokemon-ds-wide/ (it is written again each time the program starts, so copy it straight after the problem).
Enjoying it? Tips are welcome but never expected: buy me a coffee or PayPal.
