PubCraft 1.0.0-alpha.5 — Reliable board dragging and folder synchronization
PubCraft 1.0.0-alpha.5 — Reliable board dragging and folder synchronization
Corkboard cards can finally be dragged anywhere on the board, and PubCraft now keeps book.yaml in sync with the Markdown files you edit outside the app.
This pre-release fixes the chapter-dragging regression on the Corkboard (Lavagna a Schede) and adds non-destructive synchronization between the book folder and book.yaml. It includes all Universal 2 macOS distribution and durable release safeguards from alpha.4, alpha.3 and alpha.2.

What's changed
Corkboard (Lavagna a Schede): drag a card anywhere
- The bug: the board relied on HTML5 drag-and-drop with drop handlers attached only to the cards. Releasing a card on empty board space, in the gap between two cards or below the last row silently did nothing and the card snapped back to its slot. That is fixed.
- New behaviour: dragging uses Pointer Events. The card follows the cursor with a floating preview, a vertical accent line shows exactly where it will land, and the drop is accepted on cards, gaps, empty space and below the last row.
- The board auto-scrolls near the top and bottom edges,
Esccancels the drag, and a 5 px threshold keeps a normal click opening the chapter (and the synopsis modal) as before. - Dragging works correctly with status filters and search active: the saved order is anchored to the target chapter file, not to a visible index.
- The
◀/▶buttons remain available as an accessible alternative. - Honest regression suite:
tests/test_chapter_reorder.cjsno longer callswindow.reorderChaptersByDrop()directly; it performs real mouse drags and fails against the previous implementation.
Folder ↔ book.yaml synchronization (non-destructive)
Writing Markdown outside PubCraft no longer leaves the book out of date:
- New
.mdfiles in the book folder are appended tobook.yamlautomatically — title from the front-matter or the first heading, natural order — both when the book is opened and while the app is running. The chapter list refreshes within about a second, with no page reload. - Renamed files are re-linked in place using the front-matter
id, so the chapter keeps its position, title and ID and no duplicate chapter is created. - Missing files (deleted or moved away) are never dropped automatically: the entry stays in the list, flagged
⚠ file mancantein the sidebar and on the Corkboard, and is removed frombook.yamlonly when you ask for it (no file is deleted by that action). - The chapter you have open is reloaded from disk when it changes outside PubCraft, but only if you have no unsaved local edits — your typing is never overwritten.
- Reserved (
book.md), hidden, nested (.cestina/, subfolders) andREADME.mdfiles are ignored, and an invalidbook.yamlis still never regenerated. - All
book.yamlwrites are serialized, so automatic synchronization cannot race with reordering or deletion.
Tests
- New Go tests (
src/pubcraftgui/vault_sync_test.go): append, rename byid, missing-file marking, reserved/hidden/nested exclusion, idempotency, orphan-entry removal, refusal when the file still exists, and no resurrection of trashed chapters. - New browser suite
tests/test_vault_sync.cjs(7 scenarios) covering the same flows end-to-end, plus the reload of the open chapter.

- I pulsanti
◀/▶restano disponibili come alternativa accessibile. - Test onesti:
- I nuovi file
- I file riservati (
Test
- Nuovi test Go (
Installazione macOS (Universal 2, macOS 13+)
PubCraft 1.0.0-alpha.4 — Chapter movement and Corkboard reordering
PubCraft 1.0.0-alpha.4 — Chapter movement and Corkboard reordering
Seamless chapter repositioning with dedicated move arrows and drag-and-drop across the sidebar and Corkboard (Lavagna a Schede).
This pre-release re-introduces and refines the chapter reordering workflow. It brings back dedicated up/down arrows in the sidebar and extends chapter movement directly to the Corkboard cards, with smooth drag-and-drop and instant synchronization to book.yaml. It includes all Universal 2 macOS distribution and durable release safeguards from alpha.3 and alpha.2.

What's changed
Re-introduced and enhanced chapter moving
- Sidebar Chapter List: Each chapter now features dedicated move arrows (
▲up and▼down). The first chapter has the up arrow disabled; the last chapter has the down arrow disabled. The arrows are subtly visible at all times and illuminate on hover and focus. - Corkboard (Lavagna a Schede): Index cards now include
◀(previous/earlier) and▶(next/later) arrow buttons directly in the footer next to "Apri ↗", making card reordering effortless without having to leave the Corkboard. - Smooth Drag-and-Drop: Both sidebar chapters and Corkboard cards can now be dragged directly to any desired spot. Edge detection (
drag-over-top/drag-over-bottomin the sidebar,drag-over-left/drag-over-rightin Corkboard) provides clear visual feedback of insertion placement. - Accidental Click Prevention: Drag operations are properly decoupled from click handlers so dropping a card will never trigger accidental chapter opening or unexpected view switching.
- Immediate Server Sync: Chapter order updates are saved immediately to
book.yamlvia/api/reorder, broadcast to the live Watch preview, and update Focus mode selectors. - Full Localization: All 10 supported languages (English, Italian, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, Arabic) include localized titles and accessibility labels for the movement controls.
- Automated Regression Suite: Added
tests/test_chapter_reorder.cjscovering sidebar movement, boundary button states, corkboard arrows, drag-and-drop and disk persistence.

▲) e in giù (▼).
- Salvataggio immediato: L'ordine viene salvato subito in

What's changed
Native Apple Silicon, without sacrificing Intel
- All four app components contain both
arm64andx86_64: the native launcher, C CLI, Go GUI and WebKit PDF helper. The portable Mac executables are Universal too. - A small native AppKit launcher replaces the prebuilt system AppleScript applet. It preserves ordinary launch and opening a dragged project/manuscript, passes paths as task arguments rather than shell text, and is compiled for the same minimum OS as the rest of the app.
- This avoids a hidden compatibility trap: an ARM slice in a system applet can require a newer macOS even when the app's Info.plist declares 13.0.
- App copies are staged with public-readable/executable permissions before DMG/PKG/ZIP creation, rather than inheriting owner-only modes from a development volume.
- The
.app.zipprovides the app directly; DMG, PKG and portable archive remain available.
Safeguards for every future release
- AGENTS.md and release playbook record the public/test boundary, Universal requirement, versioning, signing order, validation and publication gates.
make app/make pkg-macosalways rebuild both CPU architectures. A native developmentmake allis explicitly not a Mac release build.- Automated checks reject missing/incorrect architecture slices in any app executable or portable Mac binary, invalid signatures, an unexpectedly raised minimum OS, inconsistent executable bytes between formats, inaccessible distributed permissions and stale source provenance.
- One Universal artifact set is built and then downloaded by two native jobs, Intel and Apple Silicon. They test the exact same bytes, including real app launch, GUI runtime architecture, CLI EPUB/archive operations and native PDF-helper execution. Cross-compilation is not reported as native testing.
VERSION,BUILD_NUMBERand live C/Go/installer/localized UI markers are checked for consistency. The release Go toolchain is pinned; the numeric build number is checked against prior release history when available.- Historical release notes, tags and assets are not overwritten. Windows/Linux builds retain their native package checks and are rebuilt for the new release version.
Validation and limits
See the alpha.3 validation record and attached machine-readable validation manifest for actual checks and workflow evidence.
- Still alpha software: use copies/backups and inspect imports and final exports.
- Universal does not mean notarized. The app is ad-hoc signed, not Developer ID signed/notarized. PKG and Windows installer are not publisher-signed; OS security warnings may appear.
- Minimum macOS is 13.0. Native tests run on the named CI OS versions, not every older OS/device model. Universal code removes the Rosetta requirement, not all possible OS/renderer differences.
- The WebKit helper's test is a continuous PDF snapshot, not certification of multi-page print pagination. Distributor-specific EPUB/PDF approval still requires the distributor's previewer.
- Linux ARM packages are not added by this update.
Report problems with a minimal synthetic project at GitHub Issues. Review diagnostic reports before sharing; never attach private manuscripts or copyrighted covers.

New and improved writing workspace
- Corkboard/index cards for reviewing chapters, synopses and writing status, with chapter reordering and creation.
- Chapter synopses and status in the sidebar and document controls; in-place chapter and book renaming.
- Word counts for chapters, the whole book, selected text and writing-session progress; consistent counts between the sidebar and print estimates.
- Command palette for finding chapters, notes and commands; corrected command actions and navigation.
- Reorganized book, export, typography and settings menus, a collapsible sidebar, improved responsive controls and theme handling.
- Improvements to the existing notebook, focus-writing, welcome/recent-books, tutorial and localized interfaces, including safer saves when switching notes or projects.
- Added editorial section templates for copyright/colophon, dedication, epigraph, prologue, epilogue, preface, acknowledgments and about-the-author sections.
Imports and manuscript fidelity
- Scrivener import:
.scriv,.scrivx,.scrivtemplateand zipped projects, Binder hierarchy, supported RTF formatting, chapter order and image conversion. Scrivener formatting markers are cleaned from imported text. - DOCX handling now preserves supported line breaks/tabs and excludes deleted revision text and field instructions from the manuscript body.
- ODT handling improves explicit spaces, tabs and line breaks.
- Markdown import recognizes fenced code blocks instead of turning
# commentsinside code into spurious chapters; local image references are copied/resolved for the imported project. - Imported titles beginning with accented/non-ASCII characters are no longer damaged by byte-based capitalization.
.mdand.markdownchapter extensions, including uppercase variants, are handled consistently. Uppercase.MDnotes can be opened and deleted.- Vellum conversion and other import formats remain conversions, not exact reproductions: inspect chapters, images and formatting before relying on the result.
Protecting your work
- An existing malformed
book.yamlis not silently regenerated. The application reports the problem without replacing the user's metadata. - Selecting files in an existing book no longer removes unselected chapters or replaces their IDs, titles, types or order. Newly selected files are appended; an unchanged selection does not rewrite the YAML.
- Imports allocate a new numbered destination instead of overwriting a pre-existing folder without
book.yaml. - Repeated deletion of chapters/covers preserves previous copies in the local trash. Using an EPUB cover preserves custom cover-chapter content and avoids unnecessary duplicate images.
- Chapter and note saves use content versions to detect conflicts; an existing note requires a base version unless an explicit force operation is requested.
- Project changes are guarded when clients have unsaved edits. Project-context checks and serialized mutations prevent stale-tab/cross-book operations, including unsafe MCP-driven changes.
- Chapter/note paths and symbolic links are checked for containment; the Go application and C CLI reject references escaping the project.
- Fixed YAML quoting, frontmatter detection and escaped synopsis text. First-line BOM/CRLF handling no longer causes metadata to appear in the published manuscript.
EPUB, typography and print
- Strict UTF-8/XML output policy covers text, metadata, captions and generated attributes: invalid byte sequences are replaced, forbidden XML controls removed, and a warning is emitted rather than silently producing malformed XML.
- Referenced images in nested folders retain their paths. Directory entries are no longer copied as zero-byte files, and unused images are not packaged outside the OPF manifest.
- Correct list nesting for two-/four-space indentation, ordered/unordered combinations, lazy continuations and paragraphs following a blank line.
- Stable, canonical UUIDs for new books; existing internal IDs are preserved. Legacy publication identifiers are emitted truthfully, without an invalid
urn:uuid:prefix. - UUID persistence handles absent/empty/null values, quoted keys, safe legacy duplicates, comments, CRLF and explicit document terminators without blind appends. Supported literal
|-identifiers remain unchanged; unsupported update forms fail before writing. - Additional EPUB preset coverage, corrected small-caps styling and safer language/style handling.
- More reliable publication-preview revision tracking: persisting a missing identifier no longer produces a spurious “sources changed” warning. Real EPUB/PDF previews remain explicitly generated, not rebuilt on every keystroke.
- Existing trim/bleed, print-preview and Watch workflows gain the project-safety and revision fixes described above.
Diagnostics, MCP and release hygiene
- Diagnostics honor
PUBCRAFT_CONFIG_DIR, use the current release version and preserve isolation in tests. File-opening/reveal failures are reported rather than always returning success. - Cover uploads have type/size checks and streaming copies instead of unbounded whole-file reads.
- Note previews truncate at Unicode character boundaries; empty note lists are arrays, not
null. Publication-preview artifacts have a global retention cap. - MCP status/schema and GUI-bridge handling are aligned with overwrite/conflict rules and active-project protection.
- Release builds use a separate clean source checkout: private manuscripts, local templates, internal audit notes, generated projects, dependencies and machine-specific executables are not included in the source repository.
- macOS app resources are assembled before final ad-hoc signing and signature verification. Ad-hoc signing does not identify a verified developer or provide Apple notarization.
- Native Linux/Windows release jobs build current C and Go binaries and exercise packaged CLI/GUI startup. Windows compatibility no longer depends on Unix path resolution or a Unix
zipcommand for EPUB creation.
Validation and limits
See release validation for the exact checks and platform limits. Regression coverage includes project isolation, concurrent saves, selection/import safety, UUID stability, XML output, nested lists and browser workflows. EPUBCheck 5.4.0 is used on a representative set of synthetic EPUBs; this does not certify every possible manuscript or distributor-specific requirements.
- This is still alpha software. Use backups and inspect every import/export.
- macOS builds target Intel/x86_64, macOS 13 Ventura or newer; Apple Silicon also requires Rosetta. The app is ad-hoc signed, not Developer ID signed/notarized; the PKG and Windows installer are not publisher-signed.
- Linux PDF export needs a supported browser/renderer. Windows PDF/print behavior depends on the installed renderer; native build/startup checks are not exhaustive interactive testing on every supported OS.
- Native Apple Silicon and Linux ARM release packages are not included.
- The C YAML reader is a supported-subset implementation, not a complete YAML parser. Unsupported UUID update forms are rejected without altering the project rather than guessed or rewritten destructively.
- Always inspect EPUB/PDF in your distributor's previewer. No claim of Amazon KDP, IngramSpark or other retailer certification is made.
Report problems at GitHub Issues with the version, OS, exact steps and a minimal synthetic example. Review diagnostic reports before posting: automatic redaction is not a guarantee. Never attach private manuscripts or copyrighted covers.

PubCraft is an early, free and open-source tool for writing and publishing books from portable Markdown projects. This first public alpha invites writers and contributors to try the workflow and report problems.
Apple Silicon Macs may require Rosetta. The macOS app and Windows installer are not signed/notarized; your operating system may show a security warning. Download only from this GitHub release and review the checksums.
What to try
- Create or open a Markdown book project and edit chapters in the local GUI.
- Import a supported Vellum project and check the resulting chapter order, images, metadata, and formatting.
- Export an EPUB and a print-layout PDF, then inspect both with your intended distributor's previewer.
- Tell us which operating system you used, what you expected, and what happened. See Contributing.
Important alpha notes
- Keep your original manuscript and a separate backup; work on a copy when evaluating the app.
- Vellum import is a conversion, not a perfect reproduction of every layout feature.
- PDF generation depends on the available renderer. An export completing successfully does not certify KDP, IngramSpark, or other print-service compliance.
- Windows x64 packages are included, but this release was assembled from macOS/Linux tooling and was not runtime-tested on a native Windows host during packaging. Please report installation/startup results.
- Native Apple Silicon and Linux ARM packages are not included in this release.
Validation performed for this release
make check(CLI and Go tests with the race detector): passed.- Full browser regression suite, including real PDF rendering through the dedicated test adapter: passed on this build.
- Portable macOS/Linux/Windows archive contents and binary freshness: checked with
tests/check_packages.py. - macOS DMG checksum verified; Linux CLI smoke test and AppImage extraction smoke test passed.
- Windows installer was generated and identified as an NSIS x64 installer; native Windows execution was not available in the packaging environment.
