Aero v0.4.0
Aero 0.4.0 brings split views and terminal tabs, a media player in the sidebar, Peek, a rebuilt History page with swipe navigation, and one Aero app whose updates come from the channel you choose.
Split view and terminal
- Put up to four tabs side by side in one sidebar entry. A split moves, pins, groups and changes space as one tab.
- Drag the dividers to resize the panes, or double-click one to make them equal. Drag a pane's grip to move it beside another.
- New Tab Beside (⌃=, or the page's hot corner) opens a New Tab pane next to the page.
- Terminal tabs run your login shell, alone or in a split.
Tabs, folders and spaces
- ⌘-click and ⇧-click pick several tabs and folders. The context menu, the Tabs menu and dragging then act on all of them, across spaces too.
- Folders open and close with an animated icon, can take one of forty symbols, and show their tabs when you rest the pointer on a closed one.
- A favorite keeps its pinned page. Away from it, a return arrow takes you back, and Edit Pinned Page changes it.
- The sidebar is tighter, and its footer shows the current space by name.
Browsing
- Force-click a link to Peek at its page without leaving yours, then spread two fingers or press ⌘O to open it as a tab. Without Force Touch, use Open Link in Peek in the link's menu.
- Swipe with two fingers to go back or forward. Hold at the edge to list the pages that way and pick one.
- The History page is rebuilt: search, one card per day, and the keyboard to move, open and forget pages.
- The control bar ranks every result by how well it matches and how often you visit, so a site you use every day comes first.
- Downloads can be paused, resumed, renamed in place or moved to the Trash from a richer popover.
Media
- A compact player above the sidebar's footer controls what a tab off screen is playing, with its artwork and progress.
- Tabs using the camera or microphone are listed there with mute switches, and marked in the sidebar.
- Control Center's Now Playing, its playback position and the media keys control what Aero plays.
Design
- One Liquid Glass system across the chrome, tinted by the space. With Reduce Transparency, surfaces stay opaque.
- Settings opens in its own window.
Updates
- Aero is now one app for every release. Settings › Software Updates chooses where updates come from: Stable, Beta, which also brings every stable release, or Nightly. Your tabs, history and settings stay the same whichever you choose.
- An update found on schedule waits in a small card at the bottom of the sidebar, instead of a window over the page. Once downloaded, it restarts Aero into the new version.
Current limits
- Aero Beta and Aero Nightly are no longer updated, and their data does not move to Aero. Install Aero and choose the channel in Settings.
- Moving to a steadier channel takes effect with that channel's next release newer than the one installed.
- A site hidden from New Tab cannot be shown again yet.
