MIDISTOMP MOD v2.0

The big one. Your MultiStomp gets routing, a performance screen, a looper, studio meters and a light show.

New

  • EFFECT CHAIN ROUTING: your chain can branch now. The Effect Chain screen sets the routing: split the chain into two parallel buses (Bus A and Bus B) between Pre and Post effects. The modes are Serial, Parallel, Split (L to A, R to B) and Mono Serial. The [ROUTE] and [MIX] nodes give you send and crossfade (Smooth, DJ or Cut curve), bus levels, phase invert, mute and solo, and a Stereo, Mono or Split output. The nodes don't use effect slots: you still get 6 effects. A safety limiter at the very end keeps the output from clipping.
  • PERFORM MODE: one screen where every knob, cursor key (◄ ▼ ►) and the footswitch has a target: an effect knob, an effect's on/off, a routing control or the looper. Every gesture (turn, press, hold) can wait for the next beat, bar or cycle, glide over time (Lag), and schedule a Follow move. Waiting moves blink on screen and on the LED. Saved per patch.
  • LOOPER: support for GRDLOOP from the effects pack, a tempo-synced looper that records whole bars. Up to about 24 s stereo or 48 s mono, latched rolls, and the footswitch records, stops, plays and deletes on the grid. It works seamlessly with Perform mode, and its state shows on the LED.
  • MASTER: six metering pages for the pedal's output: SPECTRUM, SCOPE with tuner, STEREO, LOUDNESS (LUFS), IN METER and OUT METER (with the limiter's gain reduction). It costs nothing while closed.
  • KALEIDO: a full-screen visual that dances to your sound and flashes on every beat of the MIDI clock.
  • MIDI: CC 85-101 for every routing control. The looper's on/off CC is its footswitch.
  • DSP 300: the DSP limit goes from 225 to 300, so heavier patches fit. The MENU title bar shows the patch's DSP out of 300 and the CPU %. Keep an eye on the CPU: a patch near the top may click.
  • SYSTEM (was VERSION): the version, the CPU load, the load of each effect, and the share of each part of MIDISTOMP (MODS).

QOL improvements

  • EXIT goes back to the MENU entry you left.
  • SETTINGS > INPUT MONO/STEREO (set STEREO on an MS-70CDR for the Split modes). MIDI is now the last row of SETTINGS.
  • Input and Master levels go up to 150 (100 = unity).
  • The effect category screen is the MS-50G's: DYN/FLTR, OD/DIST, AMP, MOD/SFX, DLY/REV and EXIT. The effect knob scrolls on through the whole list (filters after DYN, SFX after MOD, reverbs after DLY).
  • Everything from v1.2 stays: Tempo Lock, HOLD FOR, button combos, faster scrolling, plus MIDI CC/PC, CC 80/81 patch up/down, MIDI clock and Start/Stop.

Your patches: patches and installed effects are kept. Patches saved before 2.0 load in Serial mode with every effect in one line, so they sound as before. Patches made in 2.0 play their effects in one line on older firmware. Back up your patches before you update anyway, just in case.

Install: download MIDISTOMP-builder-Windows.exe below and drop Zoom's official MS-70CDR v2.10 Windows updater on it (use it for the MS-50G and MS-60B too). Then run the MIDISTOMP V2.0 Updater.exe it writes. The boot screen reads v2.0. Recovery: Zoom's original updater.

Mac: download MIDISTOMP-builder-Mac-AppleSilicon.zip or MIDISTOMP-builder-Mac-Intel.zip below (to match your Mac) and Zoom's MS-70CDR v2.10 Mac updater. Unzip both, open the builder (first time: System Settings > Privacy & Security > Open Anyway) and drag Zoom's updater app into its window. It writes and signs MIDISTOMP V2.0 Updater.app. Steps: On a Mac.

No download here contains Zoom's code: the builders make the MIDISTOMP updater from your own copy of Zoom's.

Effects: GRDLOOP and the other MIDISTOMP effects live in zoom-ms-zdl-effects-pack, release v2.0.

Full steps and every new screen: user guide. Bugs and ideas: issues. Have fun!

MIDISTOMP MOD v1.2

New

  • One build for every pedal: v1.2 is made from Zoom's MS-70CDR 2.10 firmware and runs on the MS-50G, MS-60B and MS-70CDR. One builder, one Zoom updater for all three.
  • Stereo input on the MS-70CDR. The MS-50G and MS-60B run it with mono input, as before.
  • Updates from any firmware: the updater works whatever the pedal runs now (stock MS-50G, MS-60B or MS-70CDR firmware, or MIDISTOMP v1.0/v1.1). Zoom's own MS-70CDR updater would refuse a pedal on MS-50G firmware ("Illegal device connected").
  • Your installed effects and patches are kept.
  • Same features as v1.1: MIDI CC (with CC 80/81 patch up/down), MIDI clock and Start/Stop, MIDI menu, tempo screen, HOLD FOR, button combos, faster scrolling. Boot screen and VERSION entry read v1.2.

Tested on an MS-60B and an MS-70CDR, including updating a pedal that ran the MS-50G firmware.

Install: download MIDISTOMP-builder.exe below, drop Zoom's official MS-70CDR v2.10 Windows updater on it (use it for the MS-50G and MS-60B too), and run the MIDISTOMP V1.2 Updater.exe it writes. Recovery: Zoom's original updater. Full steps: docs/user-guide.md.

Mac: no Mac builder in v1.2 yet; Mac users stay on v1.1.

MIDISTOMP MOD v1.1

New

  • Faster scrolling: left/right move between the effects of a patch several times faster than stock. At the last effect, one more press slides quickly back to the first (and the other way round), with a small stop bounce. Works with any number of effects in the patch.
  • Patch up/down by MIDI CC: CC 80 (value 64-127) loads the previous patch, CC 81 the next one, wrapping between 50 and 1. Follows CC RECEIVE and MIDI CHANNEL. Thanks @pboschi for the idea (#34).
  • Mac support: the builder now also turns Zoom's Mac MS-50G v3.10 updater into a MIDISTOMP updater. Tested on an MS-50G. Thanks @nilsjesper (#36).
  • Boot screen and VERSION entry read v1.1.

Tested on an MS-60B (MS-50G 3.10 firmware) and, with the Mac updater, an MS-50G. A user also reports v1.0 booting on an MS-70CDR (mono output, #35).

Install: download MIDISTOMP-builder.exe below, drop Zoom's official MS-50G System v3.10 updater on it, and run the MIDISTOMP V1.1 Updater.exe it writes. Mac: see the user guide (docs/user-guide.md, "On a Mac"). Recovery: Zoom's original updater.

MIDISTOMP MOD v1.0

@matujuice matujuice released this 09 Oct 18:53
49edc9f

MIDISTOMP MOD v1.0: MIDI control, MIDI clock and playing aids for the Zoom MS-50G firmware 3.10.

Tested on an MS-60B with the MS-50G 3.10 firmware cross-flashed. It is built from the MS-50G firmware, so it should run on an MS-50G too (untested). MS-70CDR untested.

Demo: watch on YouTube

Start here: user guide (install, recovery, features, MIDI CC chart, FAQ).

How to install: download Zoom's official MS-50G v3.10 updater, drag it onto MIDISTOMP-builder.exe (below), and flash the "MIDISTOMP V1.0 Updater.exe" it writes. Zoom's firmware is not included here; the builder only changes your own copy and refuses any other file.

What's in it:

  • Boot screen reads MIDISTOMP MOD v1.0; the menu's version entry reads V1.0.
  • MIDI menu: clock, Start/Stop, program change and CC receive on/off, program change numbering, MIDI channel.
  • Program Change loads patches; CC switches effects 1-6 and turns their knobs.
  • MIDI clock sets the tempo; Start/Stop keep custom effects from zoom-ms-zdl-effects-pack on the beat.
  • TEMPO LOCK, tempo screen (turn or tap), HOLD FOR (tuner, tempo, momentary), button combos for tuner and tempo.
  • The bootloader is never rewritten, so update mode always stays available for recovery. Zoom's own updater takes the pedal back to stock.

Best with the custom effects from zoom-ms-zdl-effects-pack: they are built around MIDISTOMP's tempo and Start/Stop. Stock effects work too, with some limits.

Only tested on an MS-60B so far; an MS-70CDR version will follow once I have one. Please report bugs, results on other pedals and ideas in Issues.

Not affiliated with Zoom. Flashing modified firmware is at your own risk.

MOD 0.6

Choose a tag to compare

@matujuice matujuice released this 09 Oct 10:54
b521938

Tested on an MS-60B running the MS-50G 3.10 OS.

  • The "TAP" text now reads "TEMPO". The tempo screen shows "TURN OR TAP" inside its box: turning the knob changes the BPM by 1 (40-250), tapping still works, and the screen closes 2 s after the last turn or tap.
  • While a MIDI clock is arriving, the line reads "MIDI CLOCK" and turning or tapping does nothing.
  • HOLD FOR (SETTINGS) has a third option, MOMENTARY, next to TUNER (default) and TEMPO. The footswitch flips the effect on press; held 0.5 s or more, it flips back on release. A flip-back never saves the patch.
  • Button combos in play mode: hold the down key (under the footswitch) with the right key to open the tuner, or with the left key to open the tempo screen.
  • In the tuner, pressing the middle knob (EXIT) goes back to the effects screen.
  • "MIDI SETTINGS" is now "MIDI" in the menu; the version reads MOD 0.6.
  • The transport block for custom effects is unchanged.
  • Keeps v0.2-v0.5: Program Change, CC control, MIDI clock tempo, Start/Stop, the transport block, the MIDI settings and TEMPO LOCK.
  • MS-50G 3.10 OS only for now. Build it with: zoomms build <MS-50G 3.10 updater> --patch patches/version-0.6.yaml --patch patches/midi-cc.yaml --patch patches/midi-clock.yaml --patch patches/midi-settings.yaml --patch patches/tempo-hold.yaml --build-id ms50g-3.10 --out build/out/ms50g-3.10-mod0.6-tempohold.exe (see docs/flashing.md).

MOD 0.5

Choose a tag to compare

@matujuice matujuice released this 09 Oct 10:20
0c5e597

Tested on an MS-60B running the MS-50G 3.10 OS.

  • New MIDI SETTINGS entry in the menu (DELETE EFFECT UNIT, EFFECT CHAIN, SETTINGS, MIDI SETTINGS, MOD 0.5). The menu now scrolls.
  • MIDI SETTINGS: CLOCK RECEIVE, TRANSPORT RECEIVE, PROG CH RECEIVE and CC RECEIVE (each ON/OFF), PROG CH START NO. (0 or 1) and MIDI CHANNEL (OMNI or 1-16). Clock, Start and Stop have no channel and are never filtered; SysEx (Effect Manager) is never affected.
  • PROG CH START NO. defaults to 1: PC 1 loads patch 1 (PC 0 does nothing). Set it to 0 for the v0.2-v0.4 numbering (PC 0 loads patch 1).
  • SETTINGS has a new last row, TEMPO LOCK (default OFF): changing patch keeps the current tempo. Tap tempo, the tempo setting and MIDI clock still change it.
  • MIDI settings are saved with the pedal's last-patch memory, TEMPO LOCK with the stock settings. Flashing back to an older build may start on patch 1 once.
  • The transport block for custom effects is unchanged.
  • Keeps v0.2-v0.4: Program Change, CC control, MIDI clock tempo, Start/Stop and the transport block.
  • MS-50G 3.10 OS only for now. Build it with: zoomms build <MS-50G 3.10 updater> --patch patches/version-0.5.yaml --patch patches/midi-cc.yaml --patch patches/midi-clock.yaml --patch patches/midi-settings.yaml --build-id ms50g-3.10 --out build/out/ms50g-3.10-mod0.5-midisettings-r2.exe (see docs/flashing.md).

v0.4

Choose a tag to compare

@matujuice matujuice released this 08 Oct 23:26
d1eeea6

Tested on an MS-60B running the MS-50G 3.10 OS.

  • MIDI Start resets the clock count and MIDI Stop stops it. Continue and Song Position are ignored.
  • The firmware publishes a transport block in RAM at 0x1181FF00 (magic 0x5A4D5401): running flag, Start counter, clocks since Start and tempo (BPM x 100). Custom effects from zoom-ms-zdl-effects-pack read it to stay on the beat and return to the downbeat on Start. The address and layout are fixed from now on. Spec: docs/transport-block.md.
  • The clock tempo follows changes faster, in about 2 beats instead of 3 to 4.
  • The tempo change is applied from the footswitch task, the same way tap tempo does it. Stock tempo-synced effects behave as in v0.3.
  • Keeps v0.2 and v0.3: Program Change loads patches, CC switches effects and turns knobs, MIDI clock sets the tempo.
  • The menu shows MOD 0.4.
  • MS-50G 3.10 OS only for now. Build it with: zoomms build <MS-50G 3.10 updater> --patch patches/version-0.4.yaml --patch patches/midi-cc.yaml --patch patches/midi-clock.yaml --build-id ms50g-3.10 --out build/out/ms50g-3.10-mod0.4-transport.exe (see docs/flashing.md).

v0.3: MIDI clock sets the tempo

Choose a tag to compare

@matujuice matujuice released this 08 Oct 14:50
94cbab0

Tested on an MS-60B running the MS-50G 3.10 OS.

  • MIDI clock (24 ticks per beat, over USB) sets the patch tempo, the same tempo tap tempo sets. The tempo locks about 3 beats after the clock starts and follows tempo changes within a few beats, from 40 to 250 BPM.
  • A steady clock never re-sends the tempo, so tempo-synced stock effects such as TapeEcho stay smooth. Some stock delays (for example Delay) restart their echoes whenever the tempo changes, just as they do with tap tempo.
  • Start/stop/continue are ignored. Tapping a tempo by hand while the clock runs holds until the clock tempo changes or the clock restarts.
  • Keeps v0.2: MIDI Program Change loads patches, MIDI CC switches effects and turns knobs.
  • The menu shows MOD 0.3.
  • MS-50G 3.10 OS only for now. Build it with: zoomms build <MS-50G 3.10 updater> --patch patches/version-0.3.yaml --patch patches/midi-cc.yaml --patch patches/midi-clock.yaml --build-id ms50g-3.10 --out build/out/ms50g-3.10-mod0.3-midiclock.exe (see docs/flashing.md).

v0.2: MIDI program change and CC

Choose a tag to compare

@matujuice matujuice released this 08 Oct 08:39
4ddf7d1

Tested on an MS-60B running the MS-50G 3.10 OS.

  • MIDI Program Change loads patches (PC 0 to 49 load patches 1 to 50, any channel).
  • MIDI CC: CC 14, 24, 34, 44, 54, 64 switch effects 1-6 on/off (value 64 or more means on); CC 10n+4+k turns knob k of effect n (for example CC 15 is effect 1 knob 1).
  • The menu shows MOD 0.2.
  • MS-50G 3.10 OS only for now. Build it with: zoomms build <MS-50G 3.10 updater> --patch patches/version-0.2.yaml --patch patches/midi-cc.yaml --build-id ms50g-3.10 --out build/out/ms50g-3.10-mod0.2-midicc.exe (see docs/flashing.md).
