Are there any thoughts on the possibility of creating a plugin for handling MAVLink PING messages?

For what purpose?

For generating round-trip messages that'll allow us to synchronize Pixhawk-generated timestamps with ROS timestamps.

Already done, look at sys_time.cpp.

Nice! This compensates for temporal drift only, or drift + offset?

As i remember both, but you may check yourself, see #156.
