@n1k0m0 n1k0m0 released this 23 Oct 07:56

MiniQuake v2026.10.23 (Windows x64 and Linux x86-64)

The Windows package builds the existing engine with MiniLang Python Compiler 1.2.22,
enables the background SATB garbage collector and packs the branded executable
with UPX 5.2.1. The EXE shrinks from 47.24 MB to 4.95 MB (89.5% smaller).
The Windows OpenGL, Direct3D 9, Vulkan, audio and text bridges are included.

The project includes a version-specific launcher fix for an optional assembler
callback missing in Python compiler 1.2.22's concurrent-GC path; the compiler
checkout itself is unchanged. Release builds now use these settings by default.
-NoPack and -NoConcurrentGc provide opt-outs, and -GameOnly builds the game
without compiling the full subsystem test suite.

Windows performance

Four automatically ending OpenGL tests at 1920×1080, VSync off and sound off,
used 300 warmup frames and 2,000 measured frames per map/build:

Map Same compiler, serial GC and unpacked Concurrent GC and packed
E1M1 291.2 FPS 273.9 FPS
E1M2 159.5 FPS 144.6 FPS

The requested configuration is 5.9–9.3% slower in these runs, despite the
smaller file. These are fixed-view measurements with one run per map/build,
not a general FPS guarantee or a comparison against the previous release.
Packing and GC were changed together, so their separate effects are not
isolated. Full measurements are in
the report.

Validation and requirements

Source and static subsystem checks passed. The GC-worker probe completed
background collections, UPX integrity and exact restoration checks passed,
and both maps produced matching deterministic game-state traces. The full
subsystem executable suite was not rerun for this packaging update.

Linux package

The Linux x86-64 package uses the same compiler 1.2.22 and engine sources as the
Windows package. It includes the ELF executable, two private native shared
libraries and run-miniquake launcher. Install SDL2 and OpenGL through your
distribution and start the game through that launcher. The executable is
unpacked inside the compressed TAR.GZ archive.

Linux uses the default synchronous collector: this compiler's optional
concurrent SATB mode is supported only on Windows. No Linux FPS comparison is
claimed from the Windows measurements above.

Validation on Ubuntu 24.04.4 under WSL (glibc 2.39) passed native ABI, executable
identity/CRC, UDP loopback, 60 headless frames on each of E1M1 and E1M2, a
30-frame dedicated-server run, and dependency resolution. The extracted TAR.GZ
also passed launcher/version and UDP checks. Linux graphical tests were not
rerun for this build.

Supply a legal Quake installation with id1/pak0.pak; no proprietary game data
is included. SHA-256 values for both archives are published in SHA256SUMS.txt.

@n1k0m0 n1k0m0 released this 03 Oct 13:00

MiniQuake v2026.10.03 (Windows x64)

This Windows release rebuilds the existing BP-094 engine with MiniLang Compiler
1.2.16. The game source is unchanged. The native OpenGL, Direct3D 9, Vulkan,
audio, and text bridges are included with the EXE.

In a local E1M1 OpenGL 640×480 measurement, 500 active frames yielded 407 FPS
with Compiler 1.2.3 and 513 FPS with 1.2.16 (median of two runs per version).
The EXE became about 21% smaller. These values describe this one scene and
machine, not every game configuration.

The package does not contain Quake game data. Supply a legal installation with
id1/pak0.pak. The Linux x86-64 package remains available from v2026.09.04.

Validation

Source manifest verification passed for 2,273 files. The extracted Windows archive passed --version and an OpenGL E1M1 frame-baseline smoke test.

@n1k0m0 n1k0m0 released this 04 Sep 13:29

MiniQuake v2026.09.04

This release adds the first native Linux x86-64 build alongside the existing Windows x64 build. MiniQuake remains an engine-only distribution: a legally owned Quake installation is required and no proprietary PAK files, maps, demos, saves, or music are included.

Highlights

  • Native Linux x86-64 executable produced by MiniLangPy 1.2.3's linux-x64 target.
  • SDL2 window, keyboard, mouse, controller, and queued-audio integration.
  • Native OpenGL rendering, POSIX UDP networking, and POSIX filesystem services.
  • WSLg launcher that selects the accelerated D3D12 Gallium path instead of llvmpipe and prefers an available NVIDIA adapter while respecting explicit user overrides.
  • Safe fullscreen fallback to the desktop display mode on Linux.
  • Correct empty text-event sentinel on Linux, preventing an infinite event-drain loop in the interactive host frame.
  • Separate Windows x64 and Linux x86-64 packages with stable download names and SHA-256 checksums.
  • Reworked GitHub README, a complete Linux deployment guide, and regenerated MiniDoc 0.4.2 HTML/Markdown API documentation.

Windows retains OpenGL, Direct3D 9, and Vulkan renderer selection. Linux currently uses OpenGL; unsupported Windows-only renderers are not presented as available Linux backends.

Validation

  • Complete Windows build, core, milestone, protocol, QuakeC, physics, renderer, audio, input, network, compatibility, and source-contract suite passed.
  • Windows retail validation passed for installed id1, hipnotic, and rogue game profiles, including renderer, save/demo, and two-process network checks.
  • Linux x86-64 build and full Linux smoke suite passed, including ELF/ABI validation, UDP loopback, SDL/OpenGL pixel readback, OGG decoding, audio, dedicated-server, windowed, fullscreen, and retail E1M1 paths.
  • Source manifest verification passed for 2,272 files with no bundled Quake game data.
  • MiniDoc strict generation completed with 100% documented public API coverage and zero diagnostics.
  • Release archives were checked for integrity, required files, correct Linux modes, and absence of proprietary Quake data.

@n1k0m0 n1k0m0 released this 01 Sep 07:27

MiniQuake is an unofficial Windows x64 MiniLang port of GLQuake/WinQuake 1.09.

This build uses MiniLangPy revision d7e143a, retains the BP-094 package
identity, Quake Protocol 15 and the compat_109 profile, and includes all
project changes through commit 5a29d8d.

Highlights:

  • migrated safe, non-overlapping fixed-array transfers to MiniLang's native
    copyArray primitive across synchronized edicts, renderer snapshots,
    particles, savegames, sound mixing, console lines and memory tables;
  • corrected growable-array expansion so only populated elements are copied
    into empty enlarged storage;
  • retained byte-identical deterministic behavior in a 300-frame A/B trace,
    including the same final state hash;
  • measured a conservative paired-median 18% improvement in the 5,000-frame
    OpenGL workload. Headless throughput and map-loading time remained within
    normal run-to-run noise.

Validation completed before publication:

  • source-manifest, MiniLang syntax and documentation verification across 1,373
    files;
  • all 59 optimization and hot-path checks;
  • the complete standard build acceptance matrix;
  • release executable identity, icon injection and both required native runtime
    bridges.

The separately selectable live two-process network run was not part of this
compiler-focused measurement pass. Its deterministic and compiled network
contracts remain covered by the standard suite.

The archive contains MiniQuake.exe, the two required native DLLs,
documentation and license notices. It does not contain proprietary Quake PAK
files, music or other game data. A legally owned Quake installation is required.
