Folder Colors v3.2

Choose a tag to compare

@nazsa13 nazsa13 released this 04 Nov 10:19

Install (one click)

  1. Download FolderColors-v3.2.zip below and extract it anywhere.
  2. Double-click install.cmd - that's it.
  3. Restart File Explorer once if the menu doesn't appear immediately.

Right-click any folder -> Set Folder Color (1/2): Dark to Green or Set Folder Color (2/2): Mint to Maroon -> pick one of 20 colors, or Reset Folder Color.

What changed in v3.2 (fixes the 16-color truncation)

  • All 20 colors are actually visible now. Windows silently cuts a static registry cascading submenu off at 16 items, so v3.1's single 21-item Set Folder Color flyout lost its last five colors. The menu is now split into two submenus of 10 - ten colors per flyout, well under the cap.
  • Three entries instead of one: Set Folder Color (1/2): Dark to Green, Set Folder Color (2/2): Mint to Maroon, and Reset Folder Color as its own one-click entry.
  • Hue order, not alphabetical: child keys are numbered (01-DarkGrey ... 20-Maroon), so the flyout lists Dark Grey, Grey, White, Red, Brown, Orange, Yellow, Lime, Olive, Green, then Mint, Teal, Light Blue, Blue, Navy, Space Blue, Racer Blue, Purple, Pink, Maroon.
  • Installer self-cleans: re-running it deletes the old 21-item FolderColorMenu key and any legacy picker keys, then writes the new layout. No uninstall needed.
  • Docs, README and screenshots updated to the split menu.

Carried over from v3.1: hidden FolderColors.exe runner (no console flash), SHChangeNotify instead of the removed rundll32 export, automatic repair of broken icon paths, per-user install with no admin rights.

Requirements

  • Windows 11 (classic context menu recommended; entries also work under Show more options).
  • Nothing else - everything runs per-user in %LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\FolderColors.

Folder Colors v3.1

@nazsa13 nazsa13 released this 03 Nov 17:01

Install (one click)

  1. Download FolderColors-v3.1.zip below and extract it anywhere.
  2. Double-click install.cmd - that's it.
  3. Restart File Explorer once if the menu doesn't appear immediately.

Right-click any folder -> Set Folder Color -> pick one of 20 colors, or Reset to Default.

What's in this release

  • All 20 colors from the bundled icon library are in the menu (Blue, Brown, Dark Grey, Green, Grey, Light Blue, Lime, Maroon, Mint, Navy, Olive, Orange, Pink, Purple, Racer Blue, Red, Space Blue, Teal, White, Yellow) + Reset to Default.
  • Self-contained installer - the flat extracted zip installs in runner mode with no console flash; classic-menu toggle included.
  • Single context-menu entry - Set Folder Color submenu; GUI-picker mode removed; installer auto-cleans keys from older versions.
  • Hidden runner - FolderColors.exe executes every menu action with no visible PowerShell window.
  • Icon-cache fix - uses SHChangeNotify directly (rundll32 on shell32.dll was removed from recent Windows builds and pops an error dialog).
  • Repair script - Repair-FolderColors.ps1 rebinds colored folders whose icons broke after moving/re-syncing (the installer runs it automatically over the user profile).
  • Instant desktop.ini writes - the color change is on disk in under a second; Explorer's icon refresh may lag a few seconds.

Requirements

  • Windows 11 (classic context menu is optional but recommended; the list also works under Show more options).
  • Nothing else - everything runs per-user in %LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\FolderColors, no admin rights.
