v2.5.0

@negurvulkan negurvulkan released this 04 Nov 13:56

KizamuBeam 2.5.0 is a stable release. It adds network cameras and works together with the new KizamuBeam Virtual Machine. If you are on 2.4.0 or older, Help → Check for Updates offers it right away.

New since 2.4.0

  • Network cameras (Camera window → Camera → “Network camera (address)”): use a camera that streams over the network instead of a USB camera.
    • It accepts an MJPEG stream or a single-image address over http://, e.g. an ESP32-CAM at http://<address>:81/stream. Cameras that need a login work as http://name:password@….
    • Calibration, the image on the workspace, the head-camera mosaic and workpiece detection work as with a USB camera.
  • KizamuBeam Virtual Machine (separate download, pre-release vm-v…): a virtual laser machine for testing without hardware.
    • Connect through the device template “KizamuBeam Virtual Machine”.
    • Its virtual camera can be added as a network camera at http://127.0.0.1:8282/stream. Camera calibration, workpiece detection and Print and Cut can then be tried without a laser.
    • The update check ignores Virtual Machine releases, so KizamuBeam only offers its own updates.

Notes

  • Installers are still unsigned. On first start, macOS Gatekeeper and Windows SmartScreen show a warning; the website explains what to do.
  • Windows: NSIS installer (.exe). Linux: AppImage, .deb and .rpm.

KizamuBeam Virtual Machine 0.4.0

Pre-release of the virtual laser machine. This version adds a virtual camera.

New

  • Virtual camera: the VM renders a camera image of the machine. The camera is fixed above the bed (slightly in perspective, with adjustable lens distortion) or mounted on the laser head.
  • The image is served over HTTP like a network camera:
    • as an MJPEG stream at http://127.0.0.1:8282/stream
    • as a single image at /capture
  • The camera shows what was lasered, but no travel paths.
  • Images are rendered only while someone watches.
  • Settings → Camera sets the port, mount, image size, frames per second and lens distortion. The “Camera” card in the sidebar shows the addresses.
  • Without a window: --camera-port N (the camera then delivers no image).

Together with KizamuBeam

KizamuBeam's “Camera” window has a new camera source, “Network camera (address)”. It also works with real network cameras such as the ESP32-CAM. Together with the VM, this lets you try camera calibration, workpiece detection and Print and Cut without hardware.

This camera source ships with the next KizamuBeam version.

  • The sidebar can be resized by dragging its edge (double-click to reset), hidden using the button in the top-right corner or the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+B (⌘B on Mac), and positioned on either the left or right side.
  • Each card in the sidebar can be collapsed by clicking on its heading.
  • Light, dark, or system-default theme: toggle available in the top-right corner.
  • Settings → View: theme, language (system, German, English), and sidebar placement.
  • All settings are saved.

@negurvulkan negurvulkan released this 04 Nov 09:05
50e7c5d

KizamuBeam Virtual Machine 0.3.0 lets you take cut-out parts out and inspect them.

New

  • Parts and leftover: as soon as a shape is cut through all around, it becomes a loose part; the rest of the sheet is the leftover. Both are real bodies with dark laser-cut edges, and holes where parts were.
  • Take out, turn over, inspect: lift parts out of their holes, set the leftover aside, turn anything over to see the back (engravings only show on the top), and zoom in on a single part. Use the list in the Material card, or double-click a part in the 3D view.
  • Still hanging? A part whose cut does not go all the way through everywhere, or that is held by a small tab, is reported as still hanging, marked orange on the material, and listed in the notices after a job.

Notes

  • Detection runs in the background a moment after the laser stops cutting, so it does not slow down the view.
  • Burns and cut-out parts start fresh when the program restarts; placed workpieces are remembered.
  • Coming next: a virtual camera image and automated tests.

KizamuBeam Virtual Machine 0.2.0 adds a 3D view and material you can place on the bed.

New

  • 3D view: switch between the 2D top view and a 3D view of the machine with bed, frame, gantry, laser head and a visible beam while the laser fires. Orbit with the left mouse button, pan with the right, zoom with the wheel, double-click to fit.
  • Place material: add workpieces with size, thickness, position, rotation and one of 21 material looks (plywood, MDF, slate, acrylic, anodized aluminium …) or an own colour. Drag them with the mouse, Shift+drag rotates, Alt turns snapping off.
  • Burns in real time: every lasered line burns into the material. A burn map per workpiece adds up the energy, so slower or stronger passes come out darker and deeper, and where the energy is enough for the thickness the material is cut through. Burns stay with the workpiece when you move it.
  • Laser power setting (W, optical) in the settings; the material model is calibrated to a 10 W diode laser (100 % at 300 mm/min cuts 3 mm plywood). The values are an estimate, not a measurement.

Notes

  • Placed workpieces are remembered; burns start fresh when the program restarts.
  • Coming next: taking cut-out parts and the leftover material out to inspect them, a virtual camera, and automated tests.

@negurvulkan negurvulkan released this 04 Nov 07:15
24d0d37

KizamuBeam Virtual Machine 0.1.0 is the first release of a virtual laser machine for testing without hardware. It is a separate program next to KizamuBeam and can run on a second screen.

What it does

  • Behaves like a real controller: FluidNC 3.7 or GRBL 1.1, with receive buffer and planner (ok only when there is room), status reports (MPos/WPos, WCO, Ov, Bf, A), real-time commands (hold, resume, reset, jog cancel, overrides, air assist), homing, jogging, work offsets (G10, G92), arcs, laser mode with M3/M4, alarms (limit switches, soft limits, reset during motion), $$, $I, $G, $#, and for FluidNC $/path, $CD and [ESP800].
  • Real time: moves run with acceleration and cornering speed like GRBL's motion planner. A KizamuBeam job takes as long as KizamuBeam's own estimate.
  • Connect from anywhere: Telnet on port 2323 and WebSocket on port 8181 (both configurable, optionally reachable from the network). KizamuBeam connects through the device template "KizamuBeam Virtual Machine" (from the next KizamuBeam release); other programs connect as a GRBL/FluidNC network device.
  • See what happens: the bed from above with burn marks (darker with more power) and rapids, the head with its laser spot, state, positions, overrides, planner, run time, connections and a console.
  • Catches mistakes: notices when a program overfills the receive buffer or the head runs into the frame (the machine then loses its position, like a real one). "Power cycle" starts the position at 0 wherever the head stands, so forgetting to home shows up.
  • Without a window: kizamubeam-vm --headless (for automated tests).

Notes

  • Installers are unsigned (macOS Gatekeeper / Windows SmartScreen warn on first start, see the KizamuBeam website).
  • Coming next: 3D view with material you can place on the bed, then removing cut-out parts, a virtual camera and automated tests.
