Reprise 0.7.1

Choose a tag to compare

@nikiomori nikiomori released this 06 Nov 14:10

Dragging Reprise into System Settings' Screen & System Audio Recording list now works, from the icon at the top of the permissions panel.

Apple silicon only. Since 0.5.0, Reprise runs only on Macs with Apple silicon. On an Intel Mac, don't install this update: the app won't open. Keep 0.4.0.

Fixes

  • Dropping Reprise's icon on the list adds Reprise. In 0.7.0, System Settings asked for your password and then added nothing.
  • Drag the icon from the permissions panel itself. The icon no longer floats over System Settings on its own: pick up the one at the top of the panel, which bobs while the list waits for it.
  • The password goes to System Settings. Typed into the prompt that follows the drop, it went to Reprise's panel instead.
  • Reprise's windows step aside while the panel is up, so the welcome window or Settings no longer covers the list and catches the drop.

Reprise 0.7.0

@nikiomori nikiomori released this 05 Nov 20:07

Allow Reprise's permissions right next to System Settings, and drag Reprise into the list instead of hunting for it.

Apple silicon only. Since 0.5.0, Reprise runs only on Macs with Apple silicon. On an Intel Mac, don't install this update: the app won't open. Keep 0.4.0.

What is new

  • Permissions beside System Settings. Allow or Open Settings for a permission, in Settings or on the welcome screen, opens its list in Privacy & Security and docks Reprise's permissions next to it: microphone, system audio, screen recording and calendars, each with Allow… or Allowed. The state changes as you switch a permission on, without going back to Reprise, and Allow… on another row moves System Settings to that list.
  • Drag Reprise into the list. For Screen & System Audio Recording, Reprise's icon hovers over the top of the list in System Settings: drag it in to add Reprise, no file panel needed.
  • System audio shows whether it's allowed in Settings right away. Before, it showed as allowed only after a call had been recorded.

Reprise 0.6.0

Choose a tag to compare

@nikiomori nikiomori released this 05 Nov 18:38

Bring a recording from another app to Reprise for a transcript, name a browser call after its site, and share a whole call as one ZIP.

Apple silicon only. Since 0.5.0, Reprise runs only on Macs with Apple silicon. On an Intel Mac, don't install this update: the app won't open. Keep 0.4.0.

What is new

  • Open a sound file with Reprise. A voice memo or a recording from another app opens in Reprise from Finder's Open With, or dropped on its Dock icon. Reprise adds it to the library under its own name and transcribes it right away with the service you set up, whether automatic transcription is on or not.
  • Reprise in the Share menu. Voice Memos, QuickTime and other apps can send a sound file or a movie to Reprise with Share, and Reprise transcribes it the same way. If Reprise isn't in the menu, turn it on in Share > Edit Extensions….
  • A call in the browser is named after its site. A call in Chrome, Safari, Arc, Dia or another browser is offered and saved as "Google Meet", "Zoom" or "Teams", not "Google Chrome call", and a Meet call takes the meeting's name when the calendar doesn't give one. The screen recording follows the window with the call. Reprise reads only the front tab of each window, and macOS asks once for permission. Firefox and Zen keep the browser's name.
  • Share the whole call as a ZIP. Share in a call now offers the recording or the whole call: recording, sides, screen recording and transcript in one ZIP, for a messenger that won't take a folder.

Fixes

  • A call is kept if Reprise crashes or is force quit just as the screen recording starts. Before, the next launch deleted it.
  • Changing the library's folder waits while echo removal or a transcription runs, so its files land in the right place.
  • A transcription service that refuses one request for another reason, such as a wrong language code, no longer loses speaker names until Reprise is reopened.
  • Edit > Undo after Move to Trash is named in Russian in the Russian interface.

Reprise 0.5.1

Choose a tag to compare

@nikiomori nikiomori released this 15 Oct 16:57

Transcripts of calls recorded without their sides say who spoke, with Refrain 0.1.1.

Apple silicon only. Since 0.5.0, Reprise runs only on Macs with Apple silicon. On an Intel Mac, don't install this update: the app won't open. Keep 0.4.0.

Fixes

  • Who spoke, in a call without its sides. Reprise now tells a server on this Mac or your local network that a call has at least two voices (min_speakers=2). Refrain's speaker model took both people of a call for one when one of them spoke little, and the transcript named no one; Refrain 0.1.1 tells them apart. Click Transcribe Again on a call to get its voices. With each side saved (Settings > General), the transcript says who spoke whatever the service.
  • A call without speech, such as one that only rang, says so instead of showing an empty box.

Reprise 0.5.0

@nikiomori nikiomori released this 15 Oct 16:32

Transcripts that say who spoke, your side without the echo, and Reprise in Spotlight, Shortcuts and Control Center.

Apple silicon only. From this release, Reprise runs only on Macs with Apple silicon. On an Intel Mac, don't install this update: the app won't open. Keep 0.4.0.

What is new

  • Who said what. With each side saved, the transcript tells you from the others, each phrase with its time, and a click on a phrase plays the call from there. A service that tells voices apart (Refrain with its speaker model, OpenAI's gpt-4o-transcribe-diarize) also splits the others into Speaker 1, Speaker 2 and so on, and labels a call recorded without its sides. Click a voice's name to name it.
  • Your side without the echo. Without headphones your microphone hears the others from the speakers. After the call Reprise takes them out of your side, so their words don't show up as yours. Your side as recorded goes to the Trash, named after its call.
  • Both sides at one loudness. In the mix, a quiet guest comes up to your level, slowly and only while someone speaks. The sides' own files keep the sound as it came.
  • Sides as WAV. For editing, each side can be saved uncompressed: Settings > General.
  • Trim a call, or share a part of it. Click the scissors by the player, or press ⌘T, and drag the yellow edges. Cut without re-encoding; Edit › Undo puts the rest back.
  • Spotlight and Shortcuts. Type a word that was said, or a person's name, into Spotlight. Shortcuts gets Find Calls, Open Call and Copy the Last Call. A search in the library opens the call on the phrase found.
  • Control Center. Add Record from the controls gallery to Control Center or the menu bar.
  • Refrain. Settings > Transcription offers Refrain, which transcribes on your Mac, and says when it isn't running or isn't installed. A server on your local network gets a call whole.
  • A library where you want it. Saved in › Change… keeps new calls on another disk, in iCloud Drive or on a server.
  • And more. Favorites. Drop a sound file or a movie on the library to add a call recorded elsewhere. A call keeps who was invited to its calendar event. Transcribe a call again. Copy a transcript with its details. FaceTime and iPhone calls on the Mac are found.

Fixes

  • A slow disk, such as a library on a server, no longer costs the call's sound.
  • A microphone at 176.4 or 192 kHz recorded nothing; it now records at 48 kHz.
  • WAV sides keep recording past 4 GB, and keep their sound when a nearly full disk frees up.
  • The updater installs only a version newer than the one running.
  • A trim that fails half-way puts the call back.
  • No crash when choosing a part of a call is cancelled, or on a transcript with a broken time.
  • A server address works without /v1, or as the full endpoint.
  • Lighter: a 30-minute call goes to transcription with 10 MB of memory instead of 40, a library with a long transcript takes 57 MB instead of 99, and the download is 2.2 MB.

Reprise 0.4.0

Each side in its own file, marks to find a moment later, and Reprise in Russian.

What is new

  • Each side in its own file. Turn on Settings > General > Also save each side in its own file, and a call also gets you.m4a (your microphone) and them.m4a (everyone else), on the same clock and the same length as audio.m4a. For editing a podcast or an interview. It adds about 0.7% CPU while recording; off, it costs nothing.
  • Marks. Hover over the pill and click the flag, or use Mark This Moment from the menu bar or a shortcut with a hotkey. In the library, flags sit above the wave, and a click plays from 5 seconds before the mark.
  • Calendar titles. With Name calls after calendar events on, a call takes the title of the event going on or about to start.
  • A shortcut after each call. Pick one in Settings > General > After Each Call. It gets the call's folder once it's saved, with the transcript if Reprise transcribes calls automatically.
  • Old screen recordings to the Trash. Keep screen recordings for 3 months, 1 month or 1 week; the calls stay, with their sound. Settings also show the library's size.
  • Russian. Reprise follows the Mac's language: menus, Settings, the pill, its warnings, and Siri phrases.

Fixes

  • When the other side goes silent for a minute while the call app still plays sound, Reprise restarts the capture on the app's current audio processes. This brings back calls where macOS lost the tap, or where a browser replaced its audio process mid-call.

Reprise 0.3.2

@nikiomori nikiomori released this 08 Oct 20:05

Lighter on CPU and memory, and recording that survives a full disk.

What is new

  • Less CPU and memory. Waiting for a call: 0.003–0.04% CPU and 20 MB, was 0.05% and 21 MB. Recording a call: 0.8–1.4% CPU, was 1.5%. Recording the screen: 3.5–4%, was 5–8%.
  • Playing a call takes a fraction of the CPU: 0.8% instead of 6% for a 40-minute call.
  • No more memory spikes. Icon animations briefly took about 260 MB each, for example on "Saved". The icons now change without animation.
  • Welcome no longer runs after onboarding. Before, it used 5.5% CPU in the background until Reprise quit.

Fixes

  • When the disk fills during a call, Reprise keeps the recording and continues it once there's space. Before, the rest of the call was lost.
  • kill during a recording no longer hangs Reprise: it saves the call and quits.
  • A second copy of Reprise is no longer offered as a call to record.

Reprise 0.3.1

@nikiomori nikiomori released this 07 Oct 22:21

More reliable recording, the whole call in screen recordings, and updates from inside Reprise.

What is new

  • Updates from inside Reprise. Reprise checks GitHub once a day and offers new versions in its menu.
  • No missed calls. Reprise asks about a call that starts during another one or continues after sleep. It follows a new microphone during a call, and it warns you if it doesn't hear the other side.
  • The whole call in the movie. With "Record calls from the first second", the screen recording now has the sound from the start.
  • Undo, Find, drag. ⌘Z brings back a call from the Trash, ⌘F searches, and calls drag into Mail or Finder under their names.
  • Hide the pill with a double-click. The menu bar then shows the time of the recording.
  • More like a Mac app: VoiceOver, Reduce Motion, reopening from Finder or Spotlight, and a Help menu.

Fixes

  • Opening a recording with a movie no longer quits Reprise.
  • No recording through sleep, and quitting waits until every call is saved.
  • New names of calls are no longer lost.
  • Calls that are still being saved can't be shared or deleted.
  • Less CPU during calls.

Reprise 0.3.0

Choose a tag to compare

@nikiomori nikiomori released this 07 Oct 17:17

Reprise records calls, and only that. This release uses much less of your Mac while it records, can record only the call app, and lets you start a recording from Spotlight, Shortcuts or Siri.

What is new

  • Less CPU, memory and disk. While Reprise records, the pill uses 1.5% CPU instead of 15-20%. A screen recording is 6 to 16 times smaller and uses 5-8% CPU instead of 31%. If your Mac stops during a call, the movie still opens, without its last seconds.
  • Record only the call app. Open Settings > General and select Record only the sound of the call app. Reprise then does not record music, videos or the sounds of other apps. If you start a recording yourself, or if Reprise cannot find the processes of the app, Reprise records all the sound of the Mac. This setting is off by default.
  • Spotlight, Shortcuts and Siri. Use Start Recording and Stop Recording. To get a keyboard shortcut, add one in the Shortcuts app. In the library, use File > New Recording (⌘N) and Stop Recording (⌘.).
  • Better call detection. Reprise listens to Core Audio events and does not check every second. With Bluetooth headphones, Reprise records the built-in microphone, and the headphones leave call mode when the call ends. If you mute yourself in a call app, Reprise waits 60 seconds before it stops.
  • New Settings and library. Settings has clear sections for recording, apps and transcription. Each app rule has one name: Ask, Always Record or Ignore. The library shows a call that records now, with a Stop button.

Fixes

  • The sound of a screen recording was 44 ms late. Now it is in sync.
  • The pill does not block clicks under the menu bar.
  • If the microphone stops or the disk is full, the pill shows a warning.
  • A screen recording that fails does not make the recording unplayable.

Install

  1. Download Reprise-0.3.0.zip below.

@nikiomori nikiomori released this 07 Oct 10:33

Reprise records calls, and only that. This release makes the recording more reliable and shows you that both sides of the call are in it.

The pill: two dots, a timer, a level meter, and a stop button

What is new

  • Record from the first second. Sometimes you select Record after the call starts. Open Settings > General and select Record calls from the first second. When the prompt shows, Reprise already records the audio. If you select Record, the recording starts at the first second of the call. If you do not select Record, Reprise deletes this audio permanently. This setting is off by default.
  • Two dots in the pill. The pill shows the two dots of the logo. The top dot lights when you speak. The red dot lights when the other persons speak. Thus you can see that Reprise records the two sides of the call.
