v1.3.9
This release fixes a bug in how the solar wind dynamic pressure is read and stops OTSO silently ignoring misnamed inputs. It also changes the default space weather conditions.
New default space weather conditions
The default solar wind, IMF, geomagnetic and Tsyganenko inputs are now typical quiet-time values: the median of each input over all 5-minute OMNI intervals from 1996 to 2025 with Kp <= 1. They are used only for inputs you do not give, and only when serverdata and livedata are off.
| Input | Old default | New default |
|---|---|---|
| vx (km/s) | -500 | -359.4 |
| bx, by, bz (nT) | 0, 5, 5 | 0.11, -0.16, 0.58 |
| by_avg, bz_avg (nT) | 0, 0 | -0.17, 0.59 |
| density (cm^-3) | 1 | 4.94 |
| pdyn (nPa) | 0 (computed) | 1.31 |
| Dst (nT) | 0 | -4 |
| kp | 0 | 0.7 |
| n_index, b_index | 0, 0 | 0.145, 0.032 |
| sym_h_corrected (nT) | 0 | -18.07 |
| G1, G2, G3 | 0, 0, 0 | 0.38, 0.12, 0.47 |
| W1-W6 | all 0 | 0.07, 0.06, 0.13, 0.03, 0.05, 0.08 |
vy and vz remain 0. If you give density or a velocity component without pdyn, OTSO computes pdyn from them.
The method and the quiet-time ranges of each input are on the new "Default space weather conditions" section of the Parameters page in the documentation.
Metadata output
The metadata now lists any solar wind, geomagnetic or Tsyganenko inputs that used defaults, marks each with "(default)" and states where the defaults come from. It also notes when Pdyn was computed from density and speed. (This does not apply to flight, whose inputs can vary along the path.)
