Honey, I Shrunk The Vids v2.6.0
VAAPI green bar fixed
AMD VCN produces 1088-line HEVC output for 1080-line sources, adding an 8-pixel green bar at the bottom of every frame. HISTV now applies the hevc_metadata bitstream filter to patch the SPS conformance window and crop those lines before the file is written. Affects all VAAPI 10-bit HEVC encodes on Linux.
Haloing around text on HDR/DV content fixed (software encode)
Explicit colour metadata flags (-color_primaries, -color_trc, -colorspace, -color_range) were previously applied to all HDR and Dolby Vision content regardless of encoder. These flags force a Video Usability Information block into the HEVC SPS, which tells players to apply PQ tone mapping even when the stream is already being displayed correctly. The result was visible edge overshoot (haloing) around high-contrast text and bright objects. The flags are now only applied when VAAPI hardware-accelerated decode is active (the one case where ffmpeg does not propagate colour metadata from the source automatically). Software encodes (libx265) are unaffected.
VAAPI and QSV encoder detection now reliable
HISTV probes each encoder at startup to verify it actually works on your hardware. The probe was previously not initialising the hardware device beforetesting VAAPI and QSV encoders, causing them to fail the test even on systems where they work correctly. Device initialisation now happens before the probe, so VAAPI and QSV encoders are detected correctly.
Dolby Vision + H.264 base layer sources now handled correctly
Dolby Vision Profile 8 uses an H.264 base layer with an HDR10 compatibility layer. HISTV now correctly forces these files to HEVC output regardless of your codec preference setting - the DV RPU injection pipeline only works with HEVC bitstreams, so H.264 output would have produced a broken file.
MP4Box solid green frame bug fixed
MP4Box was being called with :bitdepth=30 when packaging Dolby Vision content. GPAC interprets this as 30 bits per channel (not 10-bit × 3 channels), causing decoders to misinterpret the hvcC box and render solid green frames. The flag has been removed; GPAC reads the correct bit depth directly from the SPS in the raw HEVC bitstream.
MP4Box detection more robust
A MP4Box binary that exists on disk but cannot execute (missing shared libraries, wrong architecture, wrong permissions) was previously treated as absent, which caused HISTV to try to download a replacement on every launch. Detection now separately checks whether the binary can execute at all and whether it supports the -dvp flag needed for DV packaging, so a working-but-old MP4Box is handled correctly.
Miscellanea
- NAL unit diagnostics added to the DV and HDR10+ bitstream injection pipelines to aid debugging of VAAPI bitstream issues (logged at encode time)
- Dolby Vision VAAPI encode falls back to libx265 automatically on Linux; set
