New: pattern language, syntax 3

The pattern language is now shared with other FX-Mechanics projects. It is a superset of the previous one, so your existing patterns keep working.

  • Chords: {135} plays degrees 1, 3 and 5 together.
  • Step durations: m4, m8, m16, m32, m64, and t for triplets (m8t). They can be local to a group: (m32 1 2 3 4) 5 6.
  • Rhythm generators: euclidean (e5/16 x, e3/8+2 (1 3 5)) and binary (n8:32-251 1), with ranges that are drawn again at each pass.
  • Repeats and variations: (1 2 3)*3, and 1 [3|5|7] for a different note on each pass.
  • Gate: g5 / G5 shorten how long a note sounds within its step.
  • Hits (x, a step with no note) and comments (; …).
  • Typing errors are now shown under the pattern with their position, and the last valid pattern keeps playing.

Behaviour changes in syntax 3

  • Every pass starts from the pattern's defaults: an unbalanced O+ no longer climbs an octave per pass.
  • The two branches of a probability (p5 (1 2):(3 4)) must last the same.
  • Unknown characters are now errors instead of being silently skipped.

Your presets and projects are not changed

Patterns saved before this version are read in syntax 2 and play exactly as before ("syntax 2" is shown under them). They switch to syntax 3 when you edit them.

New: CLAP format

TeAr is now also built as a CLAP plugin, alongside VST3 (and AU on macOS). It is included in the Windows, Linux and macOS downloads, and the macOS installer puts it in /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/CLAP. See the readme for install locations.

Other

  • Updated the language reference (PDF) and the readme.
  • Build now uses the new shared FxmeTools language core.
  • Built with JUCE 9.
