@omegaui omegaui released this 08 Nov 13:56

The first release of Syspedia, a friendly guide to the Linux desktop. Browse distros, desktops and Wayland compositors, see how they look, and find out what your own system can do. Nothing is sold or installed from it.

Highlights

  • Explore: spotlights, collections, this month's releases, and a Hall of Fame of Hyprland's ricing contest winners
  • Distros, Desktops and Compositors: a hand-picked catalog, each item with a page of real screenshots, facts, ideas you can build and similar picks
  • How Linux Fits Together: what a distribution, a desktop and a compositor each do, drawn as layers you can click
  • Your System: what you run, and which ideas (a status bar, a lock screen, a screenshot tool…) are ready on it
  • Can I Run It?: checks your hardware and your distribution's packages for any desktop or compositor
  • Wallpapers: preview wallpapers from artists' collections and set them
  • The catalog updates every day on its own, so new data arrives without an app update

Install

Paste this into a terminal (it needs only Flatpak, and no sudo):

curl -sL https://omegaui.github.io/syspedia/install.sh | sh

Run it again any time to update. Or download syspedia-x86_64.flatpak below and run flatpak install --user syspedia-x86_64.flatpak. Syspedia then appears in your app launcher. The first install also fetches the GNOME 51 runtime from Flathub (about 1 GB, shared with other GNOME apps).

More on the app's page.

To build it from source instead, see Build from source in the README.

Good to know

  • Syspedia needs a Wayland session. It does not open on X11.
  • It reads its catalog, screenshots, release feeds and wallpapers from the internet; without a connection it shows the catalog it ships with.
  • Screenshots and wallpapers load from their makers' own pages and are never bundled. Credits are in the app and in docs/screenshot-credits.md.
  • Syspedia is not on Flathub; the install script and this bundle are the ways to get it.
