TL;DR: RAWmakase 0.3.2 edits JPEG, PNG and TIFF files in Develop, the way Lightroom does, and keeps slider previews moving on slow GPUs. Develop's rail now puts Edit and the tools first.

New

  • Edit JPEG, PNG and TIFF files in Develop (#482, requested in #272, thanks @priard). These files used to be view-only. Now they open in Develop like a RAW, and export, presets and Copy/Sync Settings work on them too. RAWmakase renders them the way Lightroom does. An untouched file looks as it does on disk, and Exposure, the tone sliders and white balance act on it as in Lightroom. White balance is Lightroom's relative Temp and Tint (−100 to 100) rather than Kelvin, and the eyedropper and Auto set it. Lightroom edits of JPEGs come along when you import a Lightroom catalog. A preset or copied settings moved between a RAW and a JPEG keep the target photo's own white balance and profile. Until you edit a file, the Library shows the file itself; once you do, it shows your edit.

Improved

  • Slider previews keep up on slow GPUs (#402, fixes #385, thanks @lszl84). On integrated graphics, dragging a Basic slider used to show nothing until you let go. Now frames keep coming while you drag, with a quick lower-resolution frame first when a full one would be slow. On an Intel UHD Graphics 620 laptop with a 24 MP photo at Fit, a slider change dropped from about 240 ms to about 35 ms. Other GPUs and macOS weren't measured. Exports are unchanged.

Changed

  • Develop's rail leads with Edit and the tools (#503). Edit, Crop, Spot Removal, Red Eye and Masking come first. Presets and History follow, in their own panel, so opening a tool no longer closes them. Click Edit while the adjustments show to fold them away, and click it again to bring them back. RAWmakase remembers this with the panel layout.
  • The Crop drawer no longer widens the adjustments panel, and the Library's no-catalog hint lines up with the catalog name.

Known limitations

  • On JPEG, PNG and TIFF files, strong cooling combined with strong magenta Tint can differ from Lightroom. Highlights −100, Shadows +100, Saturation +100, Clarity and Dehaze aren't yet matched closely, and masks haven't been compared with Lightroom. CMYK JPEGs can't be edited; Develop says why.

Requirements

Mac downloads require macOS 15+. Windows downloads are for 64-bit Windows 10 and later (x86_64 and ARM64). Linux packages are for x86_64 and ARM (aarch64): Ubuntu 24.04+ or Debian 13+, or Fedora 43+. The Arch Linux package is x86_64. AUR publication remains paused, so get the Arch package from the link above. Homebrew users update with brew upgrade --cask rawmakase.
