[0.14.3] - 2026-08-23 -- Things That Charged You And Did Nothing

A pass over things that took your money, or your attention, and gave nothing
back for it -- an acquired startup's engineers who drew salary and never worked,
a lever that quoted a doom figure it never applied, an $80,000 counter-offer
that changed nothing, and a feedback button that saved a file to your disk and
asked you to email it.

macOS did not ship in this release: the macOS export failed for this build (an icon regression, fix open as PR #1305), so v0.14.3 has Windows and Linux builds only and the macOS instructions below do not apply to it -- macOS is broken for this release, not discontinued.

Added

  • Counter-offers retain a named researcher, at a permanent payroll cost.
Item 4 of the hiring-panel set; #1225 is still OPEN.
  • The onboarding bill and visa obligation are previewed before you commit.
Item 5 of the hiring-panel set; #1225 is still OPEN.
  • Ad campaigns emit a monthly report whether or not anyone applied, and name what
    the campaign cost when it closes. Item 3 of the hiring-panel set;
    #1225 is still OPEN.
  • A signed-build path: tooling exists and is tested, awaiting the
    certificate. #1038 is still OPEN.
  • docs/TRUST.md, generated from source -- every point the game reaches outside
its own process. #1038 is still OPEN.

Changed

  • Compute engineers are real staff rather than an integer counter (#1247). They
used to appear on the employee screen and never load into the sim -- consuming
    stationery and producing nothing.
  • The header stops calling committed Attention "queued", and hiring says
    days. #1223 is still OPEN.
  • The music conductor takes a nudge, and a pick made mid-crossfade is no longer
    dropped (#1249)
  • The game ships with its own icon instead of the default engine one -- visible in
the taskbar, alt-tab, and the Windows publisher warning
  • The featured league seed is weekly-2026-w35 on ladder epoch L6. The seed
names the ISO week the league opens in; the rolls to w34 (23 Aug) and w35
(24 Aug) were made in the repository but never reached a published build, so
players stayed on weekly-2026-w33 / L5. This is the build that carries them
across. The slip is recorded rather than papered over.

Fixed

  • The game-over screen stops blaming crises the player actually survived (#1248)
  • The desperation lever applies real safety absorption instead of a printed
figure (#967) -- the button now does what its text says
  • An offer at or below a previously rejected figure is refused rather than
silently accepted. Item 2 of the hiring-panel set; #1225 is still OPEN.
  • Send Feedback (N) offers three one-click ways to actually send it. It used to
save a file to your disk and ask you to email it.
  • The weekly-seed fallback generator computed a non-ISO week and would have
emitted weekly-2027-w1 on 1 January 2027, where the ISO week is
weekly-2026-w53. Wrong year, wrong week, and unpadded -- and w1 and w01
are different board keys. Unreachable while the seed override is set, and now
correct if it ever is not.

Before you download: your OS will warn you, and that is expected

These builds are unsigned. Signing means buying a code-signing certificate
(Windows) or an Apple Developer identity plus notarization (macOS). P(Doom) is
an alpha made by one person and has not bought either yet, so every operating
system reports that it cannot verify who made the program. The warnings mean
"we cannot check the publisher", not "this is malware".

Windows -- SmartScreen

You will see a blue "Windows protected your PC" box, often naming an
unknown / untrusted publisher. To run the game:

  1. Click More info (the small link under the message).
  2. Click Run anyway.

Also: extract the whole zip to a folder before running PDoom.exe. Running it
from inside the zip viewer hides PDoom.pck from it, and the game will not
start. That is the single most common problem people hit.

macOS -- Gatekeeper

First launch is blocked. On macOS 15 (Sequoia) and later, double-click the app
once, dismiss the warning, then go to System Settings -> Privacy & Security
and click Open Anyway. On macOS 14 and earlier you can right-click (or
Control-click) the app and choose Open. Full steps are in HOW-TO-RUN.txt
inside the zip.

Linux

You may need to set the executable bit: chmod +x PDoom.x86_64.

Checking you have the real file

Because the OS cannot vouch for the publisher, verify the source instead:

  • This release page is the only trusted download. Do not run a P(Doom)
binary that reached you any other way.
  • release_manifest.json, attached to this release, lists the exact size and
sha256 of every zip. Compare it against your download:
    • Windows (PowerShell): Get-FileHash -Algorithm SHA256 .\PDoom-Windows.zip
    • macOS / Linux: shasum -a 256 PDoom-Linux.zip

A matching hash means the file is byte-for-byte what was published here.
